Aaaand...it's home.  Considerably more successful than the last collection, the Octavia is fantastic, devouring the miles with ease and barely using any fuel.  I could get used to this.  It feels like it's done less than half the miles, really can't fault it, especially for the money.  I had a really pleasant trip down on the train and an even better drive home with bright sunshine and clear skies.  Also, the stereo is superb and coped well with some very loud Pink Floyd and the Parrot bluetooth handsfree kit works a treat so that's a bonus.

Lee is a top bloke who picked me up from the station, fed me tea and cake and generally couldn't have been more helpful, apart from not letting me take his dog home with me.  Yet another marvelous autoshite car purchasing experience.

Is a 16 year old skoda still modern?

Posted

The p6 is still wazzing out water as one of the ancient jubilee clips is knackered. Also the hoses aren't that great either. There;s a guy on eBay selling full new hose sets for 40 quid, which I recon is worthwhile.

It's also still a pig to start I think the manual choke either isn't opening all the way or one of the carbs is opening more than the other. Once I applied the secondary choke it started fine.

Help me out here...what's going on with the light brown strip coming up from inbetween the carbs??

I do consider this 'modern' by my own standards, depends on your view I guess but my yardstick for 'modern' was set at about 1998 some considerable time ago and doesn't seem to be moving.

As my Dad said last weekend when I mentioned what I was getting, "Good grief, a car from this century".

The last couple of times I've had cars in to be serviced I've had a skoda Octavia estate as a courtesy car - same vintage. And I've been very impressed with it. Diesel, 160k and its holding up very well. Clutch point is getting pretty near the end of life but apart from that it's very nice to drive.

Merc made a strange tapping noise for a couple of days. Barely noticeable but it was definitely a noise that warranted inspection. A metallic tick that only seemed to happen when the car was moving and increased frequency with speed.

Initial suspicion was a stone or something in a rear tyre. Wasn't those. Checked wheels rotate cleanly, they do. Checked drive and propshaft joints, fine. Checked discs and pads and handbrake shoes, fine. Opened bonnet, removed the cladding, checked injector seals, fannymould gaskets and exhaust joints, all fine. Need to replace a leak off pipe but it'll wait till next week. Listened carefully to the valve gear, all quiet.

Checked the serpentine belt and the bloody thing had grown a little flap where it was about to fail. Half an hour of swearing and the usual Crystal Maze / Krypton Factor challenge of remembering the routing and it's all sorted.

Why I started at the back and worked my way forward is a mystery. Bloody irritating when cars do the sound juggling thing.

My Pajero had a faint ching ching ching noise that increased in frequency as you went faster, when i bought it . Seller pointed it out too . T'was only  a dry speedo cable !

Today the HRV had a new back number plate and my T4 had both replaced . Jetwashed all the salt and mud off the underside -300 miles left to go for the 150k rollover , same oil in it since 60k !!!   Who said it would expire if i didn't change it ??  Fuel filter might be blocked though , it loses power a bit over 3000 rpm, fine though  if you change up and slog it . Maybe the turbo is not getting enough oil as its a bit thick now .

Hmm been offered an S reg Golf for scrap money, failed MOT on emissions

Not sure what engine etc but I assume it's the 1.4 petrol which I've seen a lot of reports of emissions failures on at higher mileage - is it likely to be fucked?

So much for doing any car stuff this weekend.  Was looking forward to it but instead I have a headache, a sore throat and no voice.  I suspect it's those little bundles of germ warfare joy known as my nephews that have inflicted this upon me.  Self medicating with honey and lemon in my tea so at least some of the discomfort is eased.  Everyone seems to be full of germs and plague around here lately.

Whilst I walked round pirbright ranges and visited Stanley's memorial, my car attended Chester castle car meeting.

Loving the attention that 440 is getting, they have to be shiters.

Being typically fiat is was reluctant to start when back home again in ordered to be out in the garage- battery. The charger conditioner thing had its red light one too. My dad will check it tomorrow and see if it's ok- I suppose 9 years isn't bad for a battery though!

Other pics from Chester Castle car meeting ( was supposed to be cars and coffee, but the coffee van couldn't be bothered to turn up).

As antidote to all that expensive, flashy stuff ^^^^ have some photos of my slightly shabby Metro that I took today after a lick over and splash of Autoglym.

Its wee shed that I store it in is on the verge of falling down so tomorrows job is some hardcore woodworking action to shore it up and to keep the rain out.

it's a bit of cardboard to block the air intake and affectively apply choke. I couldn't reach with my hand and turn the key.

What a lovely day. Obviously, the Dyane had to come out.

Firstly to transport an empty 19kg gas bottle and swap it for one with actual gas in it, then a hoon into town for a quick shop. Speaking of which...

That's the second C6 I've spotted this week. This one was RHD on Dutch plates. Here's the one I saw on Tuesday.

Then I strapped down the 2CV's body and hitched the trailer up to the XM. Tomorrow, 320 miles to Bradford and back. Should be a bit lighter on the return leg.

Er, no, it comprises 80% gaffer tape and blankets as it appears to be the pup's favourite chew toy.

Everywhere you see blanket used to be leather

My car has failed its MOT on rear wheel bearings. At 54,000 miles. SHITE.

Seriously thinking about driving the thing into a big wall and getting a Dacia on £99/month for 5 years, it's less than I'm paying per month to keep shite on the road!
