Shame about the AC. That’s the only thing that works flawlessly on my GOLF. Modern or shite forum material? It’s now as old as a 405 estate I was telling you lot about in 2010. Discuss.

VAG doesn't seem to become shite until at least 20 odd years old imo. Holds far too much value and prestige. Those GTi may never really become shite as they were back to a turning point for the positive on the Golf GTi brand.

Did you get the turbo sorted? Iirc they're on the back of the engine and a right pain to change out.

Looks brand new to me. I am starting to get pissed off about the ac. I’ve had the car 7years now and the ac has been the largest single cost. And that’s including the head gasket and ball joint.

It hardly* broke down at all (the MAP sensor tube came off, which made it run like shite and I thought something was very broken, but only took 5 seconds to fix).  It is NOISY, STUPID, DANGEROUS and INAPPROPRIATE for a man of my age, so likely to be for sale shortly.  I mean it this time.  I think.

Sits on hands.

The Clio dash backlights stopped working a few weeks ago (yes I've checked the rheostat) and now I have discovered that the rear N/S tail light doesn't work. A new bulb didnt cure it. Fog and indicators still work and haven't checked the brake light yet but as its a twin filament bulb shared with the marker light, I predict not.

I reckon the 2 are somehow connected. I have ordered a new 60 amp fuse for the dash to see if that cures it. Doesn't impede GLF so I'm not that concerned.

Mini has used about a litre of oil in just over 60 miles, what a heap of shit. The correct grade is 5/30 so it's getting 5/40 then progressively thicker grades until it either stops drinking it or blows up. I care not which path it chooses as it will be an excuse to get an actual proper family car again. The boot is also COMICALLY small. 2 supermarket bags for life and that is your lot.

It won’t take long at such a spectacular rate. The cat will clog itself quick enough for a start.

Don’t you have a good family car already? Sorry - usernames changes confuse me and there doesn’t seem to be a simple way of seeing who used to be who - but don’t you have a Dacia Duster? That’s about as sensible as one can be!

Interesting question.

I post about my 2004 SDI alongside the 940 in my 'fleet' type thread on the main forum, but then it's a MK4 and despite only being a year older than yours it very much looks as though  (and does) originate from the 90's. It's also a normally aspirated diesel chugger which helps with the shite factor.

TBH the whole 'which forum does it belong in?' dilemma is still something I struggle to get to grips with.

I was Split_Pin and have asked to change it back, not had a response yet though.

We had to give up the Duster (which was great) as I am being made redundant this month and am trying to cut as many direct debits as possible. I warned my wife about a Mini in our price bracket but she really wanted one...... Told you so speech prepared (via telephone).

Ah shitbags. Sorry to hear that man. I was sailing your ship not so long ago. Did you get out of the Duster easily? I’d have snapped that up.

Anyway good luck with all aspects.

I took it to WBAC and walked away with a small amount of cash. I was very sorry to see it go.

On that note, I have just driven to Stockton tonight. I'm running a book with myself on how much oil tje Mini will have used. I am going to say 2 litres. I'll find out in the morning. I'm going to start feeding it 5w40, a grade thicker than that shite 5w30 'diet oil' which the book recommends.

It does cruise like its a big car though, the 6th gear is excellent. The seats are very comfy and support my back in just the right place. I was not fatigued at all after the drive, even though we took the A66 'Migraine Road'. I think post '10 examples came with the 2.0 M47 Diesel, I bet that's quite the long distance weapon.

Went to Scotoshite in the GSA last night, but went straight in from work. This meant taking a different route, and an opportunity presented itself..

It wasn't me that took it to bits, and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I wonder if I can get it to go again?

Sorry you could have sneaked that tiny engine up to a back bedroom hidden under a copy of the Times newspaper, when you rebuild a Jaguar engine in the kitchen you live on your own!

Whilst the car may not be prime autoshite fodder I'd say that you are, so carry on posting about it in here as it's over 10 years old

Autoshite is a state of mind more than anything as far as I'm concerned

Away on holiday atm. Nothing fancy (not my style and it’s mainly for the kids) so...

Me: We’re in Weymouth

You: Where’s that?

Me: In Dorset

You: I’d thoroughly recommend it.

(It’s more of a spoken gag that one)

Anyway, some great chod spotted on the way here. A primrose Raver 75 on the M3, various MG shite at the Fleet services and this wonderful AS spec Mini where we’re staying. Beige, Auto, Base. That’s a full house in clubhouse bingo.

Happy holidays to you and yours.

Saw it again yesterday so got some moar photos. It’s just perfect - not shiny but not shit. Period correct “meat is murder” stickers in the back and an 80s Halfords radio cassette just within reach by the passengers kneecaps.

Also, at the bottom of the reg plates it says “Jean’s Machine”. I get the feeling I’m not the only one who loves it.

Checked the oil on the Bini this morning and it has used.....none. It was a long motorway/fast road run with barely any stop/starting so the stem seals had no time to smoke.

Hang on.  You live with @Mrs6C... I'm pretty certain rebuilding an XK on the draining board wouldn't be an issue!

Indeed! This was before my time, though we still have the antique dining table he used as his workbench! :-)

There was a strange theory surrounding VVTi engines in Toyotas that running 99ron fuel reduced the oil consumption of those engines. Anecdotally, I also found this to be the case - but the extra 10p per litre of fuel (£6.00 per tank) was exactly the same as one litre of 10w40 oil. Actually a bit dearer. Might be worth finding out what the science was behind it and whether it might help you?

Anyone need a modern? I’ve got a 2015 15 Clio 0.9 TCe 5dr coming in shortly, 7k miles, one owner from new, full dealer history etc.

Has nav and AC and stuff.

Excellent!  Must be hard to balance that way though.  I once bought a non-running moped from a flea market in Grenoble.  Too far to push it home so I tipped it upside down and put it on the luggage rack of my AV89, and strapped it on with bungee cords.  Got it home OK but cornering was interesting so not ideal, but probably still easier than carrying the other moped in my left hand...

today we have had a most productive day.

it started on a sour note, going over to the lock up there were a number of little, and not so little lambs prancing about on the road. that was when i found out that the horn on Rodny Mini wasn't working.

joy....

well no time to look at it now, so into the lockup the black car went cos the reason we were at the lock up was to try and sort out Cocopop the orange mini. and its habit of spilling its coolant out of the engine. i said it was the water pump, kerry said it was the bottom hose. these are known as "the octopus" as it branches off all over the joint. to the expansion tank, the pump, the heater and i think a few other places too. mainly i think, cos i said it was the water pump...... its not been used a for a while,. a fortnight of so ago when i went to get the car out of the garage. i checked the oil. yes - we have oil, and check the water - no, we have no water...... oh dear. right - back into the garage you go! since then its not been touched, either busy with work, busy with something else or busy cos the weather has been crap.

so today, we topped up the water in the orange mini and braved the road works in town to get the car over to a friends garage.

once there it was a simple* task of taking off the alternator, expansion tank and horn so that we could get at the waterpump, which sure enough it was leaking like a sieve. sadly the original BL spec pump is now NLA, as the one we took off of the car,  still had the BL "plug hole of despair"on its casting! wel, we got the new pump on, everything fastened up, pop some water in, and the moment of truth.

no leaks!! success!! a car that we can now use.

now to deal with the black mini, aka Rodny Mini, aka The Black Prince, aka Black Beauty, and many other, less polite names. well, after wiggling the wires, checking the fuses (all 2 of them, cos that's all there is on that car, 2 fuses!) and wiggling the wires again with the horn still now working, kerry noticed that there were 2 spade connections hanging off underneath the fuse block not connected to anything. she pushed them back on..... and hey presto, the horn was working! and the interior light now works too, so two fixings for the price of one!

told you it had been a productive day.

maybe he knew he was only turning left to get out of town, so this setup added 10mph to conering speed? ???

Even if that thing only weighs 15kg (which is suspiciously low) that some real dedication.

no matter what the bloody thing weighs,

there is no way,

NO WAY on earth he can out run 1 and a half million tonnes of water if that damn does fail.......

Where have all the birds gone? Normally I'm woken up at the crack of dawn by a cacophony of birds screaming good morning but its eerily silent outside.

It's freaking me out a bit. All I can hear is a distant rumble of traffic.
