Bugger me this 1100 is hard work. This is looking at the inside foot well with a light behind. You shouldn't be able to see light.

I thought you were in the Planetarium for a moment.

Insurance swapped, tax sorted, train tickets booked for early doors, random mate on holiday from the navy picking me up at silly o'clock, sorted but a little grumpy.

This can mean only one thing....

A collecshun is imminent!

Has anyone heard from Barmatt since this morning? :?

Shift at worked changed to a 6 to 3, so had idle time after work, so watched grand tour about ford funeral with ford mondeo etc, that done decided id play with some shiney tape on tinted rear lights..

Unsure about it..

I quite like the contrast.

Workmate casually dropped into conversation this afternoon that he has a mate who has too many cars and may be looking to shift on a B reg Ford Granada in fetching silver and black and a Mk2 Golf GTI which both 'need stuff doing'

Asked him why he was still working and to find out more info asap. Will post up any info as I get it.

Meanwhile, rushed home from work as my plan earlier this week of making the Streetshite presentable for Longbridge had failed miserably. Quick wash and Fast wax and it positively glimmers. I think. It was dark when I finished.

Yeah all is good here mate. Didn't bother doing a collection thread, don't know why just cba.

I've been back home for a few hours with collected motor and all went to plan. Thanks for the concern, I'll do a little update when I'm not so knackered.

I was fortunate enough to find today’s apres work time free from further responsibilities so set to doing what needed doing several months ago, rectify the blowing exhaust of my LS400. (due to the pleasing burble it has been emitting, sorting said problem has been easy to overlook)

I knew the blow was coming from between flanges (©️Mills & Boon) so the plan was to chop off all rotten flanges and replace with fresh ones.

The lorry yard next door to my work let me use their lifts and we were on.

Night vision activated, source of blow located. I’m sure me telling you the other side was just as bad is actually more enlightening than another of my dire photos.

Whilst the car was aloft I did some measuring and some machine operating, the result of which is this:

Next job was to chop the gout out of my exhaust, which was an awkward but not unachievable task.

Luckily there’s a stabilising(?) bracket that ties in to the catalytic converter flange so locating the replacement pieces was eased considerably. I also utilised a 5 gallon drum and a broom to hold the rest of the exhaust in place.

All flanges replaced.

There are no photographs of the reassembled system as my phone had ceased to be alive by that point, but happily everything bolted back together and my drive home was a substantial bit quieter than my drive in.

TL:DR. I’m shit at picturing and worser at righting.

See, that's just the sort of casual hard engineering that I love to read!

Normally pictures flatter my cars but the body and paint on this car are actually in remarkably good condition!

Popped down to the West Country, to collect this

Garaged since 94 (25 years) when it had “ an engine rebuild”. Not run since....

However, rust free, so alls good. Square tyres made for interesting towing!

Sadly, this happened on the way down, when a pallet of hardbacks fell off the transporter

And bounced off the bonnet, showering me with books through the open sunroof.

Quite exciting! Anyway, I bent the banana’d bonnet clear of the engine, and it’s strapped till it’s replacememt arrives from Italy. It’ll need a new screen, and the dents in the roof sorting - but no one died. Sadly, the miscreant didn’t stop....

^^ Liked because of the lovely looking Trabbie, not the accident. The 601 is on my long term hit list of a car I'd like to own.

Really need to get a replacement van now. This last week have been using the Merc to deliver things and pick stuff up, and a 3.7 litre petrol engine isn't quite as cheap to run as a 2.0 diesel that's on free fuel still.

as mentioned like for the trabant!

I hope we hear more of it in the coming days/months/years/etc :)

if only there was someone else rebuilding the engine in their trabant for you to get help with yours...

Wow, eventful day then Nigel! any good reads to make up for it?

Poor Marea looks to have taken it well/been expertly panel beaten back into shape. Were the tyres on the Trabbi Stomils for the full house of shite purchasing?

Posted

Bloody hell, that could have been a lot worse and I bet the books were all rubbish as well. (If that had happened to me I'd be looking for new seat upholstery as well)

If only they’d been paperbacks you might have had less damage...

Great news about the Trabi! Less great news about the Marea... can’t believe the Cockwomble didn’t stop!

The Trabbie is a rarity. A low mileage car bought in East Germany, driven here by the Eastern owner for a long holiday, ( when the wall came down) & sold to the gent I bought it from, then flew home. My seller used it as an everyday till it seized/ nipped up. Had it rebuilt but went no further -‘ read’couldn’t get it running. They can be a bugger after a rebuild.

I’m imported Trabs in the 90’s wholesale, so it holds no fears. Very few moving parts and if I have to swop the lump out, it’s about 20 mins and 2 spanner’s, each way. Gut feeling is the electronic ignition failing, causing a potential lean burn, and stopping it now.

However, I’ll not be trying till I’ve stripped/ cleaned the whole fuel system, & checked for a spark on some new plugs. Then the steering ( which feels to have seized) & brakes, undoubtedly.

Kinda hope one of the kids will do it, under supervision, cos I’m not yet capable of lengthy lean overs. We’ll see. It is immaculate - no rust anywhere, certainly not in any of the usual places- which is what I really wanted.

The Marea is ex Bramz, ( for those who recgonise it) and a pretty good small/ midsize tow truck. It’s a good mile eater, comfy, quiet, economical,& actually, seems to do it better than my diesel Marea weekend.

I’ve kept it boggers, save for getting bigger rims cos these tyres are rubbis& too small.

I’ve a replacement bonnet coming from Italy ( hopefully the same colour!), screen on order, dents in the roof? Maybe.

I guess I was lucky. I saw it coming, braked hard, and swerved so the actual pallet bounced off the bonnet and hit the centre of the screen. It had been lined up with the drivers seat. The flood of hardbacks through the roof was a bit of a surprise, though,!

Anyway, it’s a tough old bird, it did it’s job and I’ll straighten it out, inc the o/s/r dent it collected whilst parked. I like it. It’s bland enough for sillies.

Just been and picked up a guild dual action polisher for a bargain 33 quid from Argos. Reviews are really good and hopefully it will be less likely to burn through the paint than the standard type one I already have. Now just need to get some fine cutting paste to try it with.

Had my head turned by a 80Ah 800CCA AGM battery. Seriously considering it for the CX.

Posted

Wow that's sad. I remember watching Robot Wars in the early days and his stuff was always technically superb. Shame.

Posted

With the CX now returned with a working gearbox (if not a working battery; the workshop managed to put my nearly-new Exide EB740 in another customer's car, and that customer has long since gone, leaving me with a dud battery; I'm now demanding an exact replacement), hopefully I can get it back on the road once I get back from my holiday.

Fiddling in the engine bay of the CX, finishing some of the work that the workshop didn't quite finish, such as remembering to plug in these two relays for the ABS. Black relay in black socket, and grey relay in white socket I think it is:

post-23014-0-98493200-1555185002_thumb.jpg <----- Hopefully not in the wrong sockets.

Also noticed this intriguing little adjustment knob nearby. No idea what it is, or what it does. Haynes Book Of Lies doesn't mention its presence:

post-23014-0-85347100-1555185393_thumb.jpg <----- Wuzzitfor?

The non-operating A/C compressor turned out not to be a Sanden, but an oul Seiko which is meant for the original R12 refrigerant:

post-23014-0-71065500-1555185667_thumb.jpg <----- I thought Seiko made watches?

If I ever get round to having A/C again, the CX HVAC system being famously bad, an expensive new compressor will be needed, compatible with whatever refrigerant is flavour of the month with the authorities; I understand R134a is no longer acceptable now.

Speaking of batteries, I wonder if there would be any advantage to installing one of these newfangled AGM stop/start batteries in the CX instead?

Heading off the Lakes this afternoon for a holiday (and the Hub-meet).

So predictably this was the scene at the time we planned to depart.

It’d had the Audi/BMW modification. The indicators didn’t work.

One had failed on our last trip, I assumed bulb. But all failing at once? Lateral thinking made me check the hazards which worked. Fuse thought I!

Once I’d located the fuse box I extracted a very old and broken fuse. Swapped and we had indication! On all but that one.

post-18217-0-66926700-1555186686_thumb.jpeg

Bulb swap made no difference, checked old bulb in other indicator bulb was fine. stripped the holder/connectors down and nothing amiss. Still nothing. Not quite sure what’s up here. Hand signals and left turns only it is then!

I’ll figure it out when I get back..!

As an aside anyone else going to HubMeet?

I've done nearly 140 miles in the Renault 6 today.  That's the farthest I've driven it since I took it up to the bubble car museum over 10 years ago.

It wasn't completely without fault - on the way home the fuel gauge packed up and I lost a number plate light, and the repair I did on the petrol tank years ago is going to need redoing as there's a bit of a drip, but it ran fine with no unexpected shenanigans, and even the brakes pretty much behaved themselves - I only had to twat the caliper with the mallet once in 140 miles.  The battery is still hanging in there too, which is extraordinary - it's the same battery that was on there when I bought the car over 11 years ago, and it was far from new then.

It's not quick by modern standards, it's hopelessly undergeared on the dual carriageway, there's a lot of wind noise and I still haven't fixed the heater so it's bloody freezing, but it's comfortable enough to be tolerable on a long trip and overall did bloody well really for a 47-year-old Renault that's barely been used in the last 10 years.

Started stripping down the bulkhead on the Audi but I couldn't get the wiper arm off no matter how hard I tried. I managed to bend up the plastic scuttle trim as its really flexible so I think I can reach the fuse box seal to add sealant with that in place. The fuse box doesn't appear to have a bottom in it as I could see right down into the wiring so I wonder if water was getting in doe the the lid not being fitted properly.

Also taxed the Corsa so will use that for the next few weeks until the MOT runs out. Hopefully wont need much, possible a small repair to the n/s strut tower.

The Carina is quite rotten. This has saddened me a bit as I like it, but the welding required is a bit on the sore side.

Today I went to scout out a potential replacement... which is out of test, needs four tyres, a stereo and... err... sills.

FUCK SAKE.

Reckon I'm still gonna buy it anyway. Fuck it.
