The new news 24 thread

So, not sure where to put this so I'll put it here. Not sure if it merits its own thread or not, probably not.

Well, one of the things I budgeted into the money from the sale of the big ol' Tourneo was some half decent tools and one of these things. It's been on back-order for months but it finally got delivered last week.

This video is just up to the first lift point, it goes higher. Commentary provided courtesy of the two smallest offspring, who are fascinated by it.

I'll add in a photo of it at full height in a minute, it's on my phone and I'm on my laptop.

Also, ignore the state of the poor MX5, I gave it a wash afterwards.

Before I'd put it all together:

Nice. I'd really like something like that myself. Jacking cars up is always a pain in the arse!

2CV was meant to be the steed for Reliant engine fetching today, but the battery had all of about five volts in it. Hooked up my new jump pack, away she went. Took the pack off, she stopped running after a minute or two. Hmmm. Out with the voltmeter, still 5.5v even when running. Ah. Further experiments later will confirm whether the battery has died (it's just an old one a friend gave me) or whether the alternator is playing up.

Elly obvs doesn't a robin reliant engine in her bottom

Yeah, everytime I happen to find myself on the Cov ring road, I find myself going around it twice as I always miss the slip road I want.

I suspect that Rover 400 Tourer in the background might belong to one of the higher profile 2/400 owners' club members, also from Yorkshire way. He was at the Fleur de Lys show in Wakefield too, but I didn't manage to catch him as I was with Squire Dawson and blguy1976 (a fellow 416GSi owner) for most of the time I was there.

For some unfathomable reason, after nearly 7 years of ownership, the Rover of Doom's central locking has decided to start working on the tailgate.

It's a Santana - A B2 Passat saloon.I think they just called them Passat Saloons for the last year or two of production.

You also need to stop doing this. I am so tempted by one of them - but I am still saving up for a roll bar after your last post!

Didn't skizzer have a similar jump for joy moment right up until the point it broke itself again with all his tools in the boot in an sd1?

My friend Rick has just been over to work and swapped the anti-roll bar bushes and oil pressure switch on the mercedes. The old bushes were very worn and possibly original. Also full 3bar oil pressure is restored thanks to the new switch - which he got to from underneath, despite it being on the top rear of the engine.

That does ring a bell - thankfully on the 200 one can fold the seat backrests down from inside the car.

I also appear to have caught the sun on the back of my neck.  Should have worn my cap back to front like the cool kids do.

I agree, definitely a lower turnout than last year - the Minor OC and Maestro / Montego OC both had roped off areas allocated to them, and both were completely empty.  I was wondering if the organisers had done something to piss people off and some of the clubs were boycotting the event.

I seem to recall that there has been a big falling out, possibly last year.

It was a good show but not a patch on earlier years, the autojumble was still fun but the exhibitor numbers were much lower than in the past, club stands were empty yet in the general parking there was said cars that should be on the club stands, some cars were parked miles away from others and it was all a bit of a shambles really. The organisers really need to sit down and take a look at where it's going wrong, I suspect doing away with cars parking by year and just having model allocated parking instead so all Minors go in one area, Princesses in other etc and that way the club stands can mingle and chat to non club members, and then having one area for all general classics visiting.

I still had a good day though, again I got burnt to a crisp and attacked by wasps in the cafe but the convoy up with my mates was fun.

And there was some nice stuff there like this Snapdragon base Ital 1.3 for £1500.

Just bought some Millers classic 20/50 oil as the Metro is overdue a service. I normally use the Halfords green stuff, but after reading about ZDDP content their oil isn't up to scratch.

What's the collective wisdom on engine flush? As usual the internet gives various opinions, but I suppose I'm also a bit reticent seeing as the gearbox shares the same oil.

Or am I just creating worry for the sake of it?!

Posted

Snake oil I reckon, based on no knowledge at all. I've never used an oil flush on anything. As long as changes are done more frequently than 20,000 miles, I can't see the reason to bother.

The Metro is a special part of your family so only you can decide whether you're being justifiably cautious or just a bit of a flange :)

If it gives you more peace of mind then it might be worth doing but I'm not sure about actual mechanical benefits.

Is the blazer actually a Holden with factory LPG?

No, it’s a regular UK spec Chevy Blazer without LPG, although at 14mpg it could really do with it!
Posted

I'm always worried that engine flush may remove attached bits of crap that help an old engine keep working and not leaking everywhere.

Posted

I use engine flush most of the time.

The one I don't is the Volvo T5, as someone told me not to, I forget who.

Being a flange sounds pretty accurate...I'll just keep it simple and stick to an oil change.

I also need to grease the radius arms as they haven't been done in a while.  I did try to do them on Saturday but the grease gun wouldn't play ball, so I ended up chucking it against a wall (repeatedly).  I've now bought an old, better quality one and hopefully should be in a more patient mood come next weekend...

So glad it isn't just me! I've lost several that way. I've since bought one of these, and it feels much better to use.

The filthy passat blotted it's copybook by developing a leaking fuel filter just as we were about to go on holiday. I only fitted it in feb but to be fair it was given to me as my dad had never fitted it to his passat. I noticed it had been dropped at some point - the drain bung was damaged so I swapped it with the one off the old one - today it began to leak so it was binned.
