I put this in for its first MOT test since I've owned it today.

Thankfully it passed! The tester commented that it was in better condition that most 5 year old cars he tests which was nice! He did say that the CO reading was off the scale which I knew about as it smokes from overfueling so I must sort that out and the handbrake wasn't as good one side but being a auto it wasn't a bit deal.

I've also been offered a 1970s Mazda 1000 today randomly, it's a friends ex partners father who's died who lives on the road behind, apparently his garden was full of old cars including MK1 Golfs and Minis and this Mazda is still there, i went to take a look but it's under a tarp but they want it gone. I'm waiting for more details on it but if it's not a shitter I'll be looking for a home for it hopefully (my Inn is already over subscribed with cars!)

One of these?

I had to look it up to remember what it looked like. Haven't seen one since the, er, 1970s.

Had an excellent skip find today when I spotted a "mid-century modern" piece hanging out next to a skip with a big note that read "TAKE ME".  A knock on the door to confirm it was indeed free and Mike and I carried it home since it was literally around the corner but too big to fit in any of our cars.  Someone's been at it with the upcycling chalk paint, which is the only issue.  It doesn't look terrible, but it certainly feels terrible and the paint is well past the first flush of youth.

Df_ZraPX4AErqZf.jpg

What's amazing is that they didn't do any prep at all so with some soapy water and a putty knife you can literally scrape the blue paint off to reveal suprisingly good veneer underneath.  Once fully cleaned I'll seal the lot with a satin varnish.

Df_Z3LUX4AEM6pM.jpg

Apart from the paint there's nothing missing or damaged, which is nothing short of amazing on this sort of furniture.  When I'm done it'll get a coat of satin varnish to reseal everything and hopefully look like this unmolested example.

after our success on saturday, sunday we failed in our quest to get both mini's to murton park.

getting within 50-odd yards of the lock-up containing the orange mini, we ground to a halt in th eblack one. no mire drive, though the speedo was still registering speed even though we weren't moving, along with a horrid clunck from the car when the clutch was disengaged. looking under the bonnet, i found that the n/s drive shaft was spinning happily away but not actually moving the wheels..... seems we broke a cv joint, and probably shagged up the drive shaft in the process.....

post-18270-0-08176900-1529345407_thumb.jpg

bugger.....

post-18270-0-62835200-1529345437_thumb.jpg

well nothing for it but get cocopop, run across to the FiL's and get  the "thunderbird" (or is t Blunderbird, maybe Chunderbird, whether or not you care for a metro.)

a quick turn of the key, and marvin burst (a bit grumpily) in to life. well we have ignored him for an age, or at leat a month or so. poor marvin....

post-18270-0-15332900-1529345626_thumb.jpg

so armed with a ratched strap (cos the proper tow rope is at home in the back of the rover) our sad little convoy made it up to the lock-up. the broken car wa deposited inside, dunno when we'll get to look at it cos, well, we'll bet around to it, maybe.....

so eventually we did get to Murton Park, though with the strangest looking morris mini 1000..... while there, we did see these gems too.

That's the one! Didn't know they had put it on there! Apparently she was only after £200 for it!

Hope you aren't now seen as the robbing git who tried to steal it for a fraction of its worth.

Good commitment there MM, thanks for sharing the pics

ETA: Did your missus carry the "PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ME" sign around all day, or did it go on the car? :D

no, kerry was just putting the toy cocopop on the dash board of, er, cocopop when i took the picture!

but things breaking on old cars is all part of the joy* of owning such a vehicle.....

when we changed the outer CV joint boots one of the joints was an absolute nightmare to get back onto the end of the drive shaft, we are betting that it was this alkward joint that has broken.

and apparently i've taken the failure far better than kerry was expecting.. the swearing and shouting will occure when we are trying to fix the car, no doubt when we are trying, and failling to get it back together!!

She should not hold her breath.  My son's '94 Tipo was won by a bidder that went to £621.  He was a no show, a bit like the chap who won it a week or two earlier.  The other Tipo that was for sale ( a three door) went for about £1200 and, guess what, the bidder did not turn up.  It has been relisted. My son can't be arsed relisting again and has found a friend who will buy it -  but not until the end of August.

No delivery Fred because I only remembered to take two photos; my Saab turbo has gone to it's new home chez-chatsharris.

That's my father in law there on winching duty:

A pleasure to meet chatsharris; hopefully he's got more patience than me with which to learn the ways of the K-jet.

Didn't do any Woollarding or any of that malarkey so you'll have to make do with a pic of the 900 on the trailer when I stopped to make sure it hadn't fallen off.

I've since found out she was actually after £100 for it! I would have given her more than that for it but I haven't the room anyway. At least it's her son selling it and not some chancer.

Okay, I get upcycling, I really do.  I hate the word, but some of the things people make from broken old rubbish is neat.  This thing though hasn't so much as a veneer chip, a cup ring, a scratch... nothing.  Before someone went at it with chalk paint it was actually perfect.  It's satisfying to return it to the previous state, but also annoying knowing that it was originally in great condition anyway.

I must have been lucky getting a Tipo buyer who turned up and paid in full. I had fancied that three door as it looks class but now I've got another car incoming can't.

That is classic mid-20th Century design. And bloody awful. (In a good way)

Yeah but Nan's old furniture is cheaper, innit.

The rebuild of the Perkins engine in my series 2A is finished.

It needed a bleedin' good bleeding to get it going. I wasn't convinced the lift pump was doing much, so as I had a repair kit on the shelf, I thought I'd take it off and take it apart.

New spring and diaphragm was a PITA to fit.

Finally got it to cough into life.

It's running fine with its new piston rings and big end shells.

There's a small leak passing injector 3 which improved when I cleaned and reseated it, but it's still not 100%.

Here's a vid of it running..

Took the 45 for a quick spin last night to ensure no battery flattage. This is the one with the virtually welded on o/s/r brake. All fine and gave it a short and sweet razz around Bulwell. Got home, checked brake disc - red hot. Checked n/s/r - warm, o/s/f - warm, n/s/f - red hot. FFS....

Is the lack of a video of it running due to all those bits you had left over.

It's there now.

There was some chuffing from the inlet manifold, pointing to possible wrong tappet setting holding a valve open, but that seems to have stopped now.

With a couple of new Barums, grease up, and a thorough check of everything the Sherpa sports went straight through its MOT exemption. My workshop is full of dismantled Bedford van but anyway the grass is more comfortable than a concrete floor unless it rains.

I'm actually conscientious about checking vehicles' roadworthiness as I don't want to die just yet, but it still seems a bit odd not to need a ticket on a '70's car.

Still sounds great though.

I had a late 2a LWB with this engine and liked it. Lots of torque, a bit too much for the layshaft, but at least when it broke I was able to drive 70 miles home by leaving it in 4th gear and starting off in low range.

It's for this reason I removed the turbo on my present series 1's 300 TDI, whose torque is similar to the Perkins. The earlier Rover box is weaker than a 2a's, particularly the layshaft itself so that wouldn't have ended well.

Surprising that what was at the time the world's largest diesel engine manufacturer supplied that homemade looking exhaust manifold, but it seems to work.

Posted

The manifold is homemade. It came with the engine and I made the rest of the exhaust from scrap pipe I had.

The manifold was cracked, so while it was off I gave it a weld up and some paint.

Insurance is up next month & was thinking of trying to get a classic policy for the prelude, does anyone have any recommendations for a company to try? Never had a classic policy before.

I use Peter James.  Unlimited mileage, UK and Euro breakdown cover included, and they are good for adding additional cars (although the latter benefit can be a bit random in what they'll cover).  Not the cheapest judging by my renewal premium this year but worth it for the add ons.
