RichardK - those new Ford Pumas are utterly, utterly gopping.

I quite like them out of all the modern things - but it’s a “top half only” deal, like, remove the inner ring of the arch, the lower airdam, lower the lot and retain the lights, arch curve, grille, make it 3 doors, I’d like the result. Plan to photoshop it.

But all cars like this make me wish we had something else to review, that the whole industry hadn’t chased this market.

This is an ST. It’s quick, uncouth, rather fun from the driver’s seat but it’s the same price (give or take a couple of grand) as a GR Yaris which is better looking as a sporty car, four-wheel drive and very, very capable.

If you're not planning to put the tripod on the road draining off the stale stuff and replacing it with Aspen alkylate fuel would help; it stays fresh far longer than pump fuel.

Thanks. That is not one I'd heard of.  I'm still undecided as to the car's future with me. Selling it next year is very likely.  Prior to that, I would want to get the car running again from a cleaned fuel system for a last drive in my ownership.  The last time I recommissioned the car ready to sell, I enjoyed it so much that plans to sell went out of the window.  We will have to see what happens next time 🤔.

Everyone else seems to be building SUVs?

Which is totally fair. But Ford shouldn't call it a Puma.

Always annoys me when manufacturers try to use another models name to cash in on something that really has nothing whatsoever to do with the model they name it after. It just pisses over their own heritage.

I've never forgiven Fiat for the way they milked the 500 name trying to make a range of them.

The worst of the lot was the 500L. That thing should 100% have been badged the 600 Multipla if they were that concerned with the retro route.  But the popularity of the 500 at the time (and no doubt the fact people now associate the Multipla bit with the 3 seat uglybug) meant they decided to name a massive, tall, 5 door mini MPV the same as a 2 door rear engined tiny city car to cash in on the trend.

I don’t think Ford attribute much heritage to the Puma - a short-lived FWD blobby 3 door that many people derided for not being the Capri revival everyone wanted…

There are some nice details in the modern Puma - in non-ST form I think it’s nicer than the VAG/Stellantis/Korean alternatives. And it drives well, is well equipped and ergonomically sound in the way Fords nearly always are.

The ST is “a bit much”, too many tickboxes. It’s hot-hatch sharp to the point of twitchy, this has the mechanical LSD as well.

It may turn out to be quite easy to like but I do wish they’d made a proper, small, coupe Puma

I think the Capri revival was supposed to be the Probe.

That went well.

That, and latterly the Cougar which was based on mk2 mondeo mechanicals.

Have you seen the new Mustang ?😵😫

I have never been a big fan of the Mustang but they are a great car with a big following. The new monstrosity is blatantly cashing in on the name.

Literally no evolution in any direct sense other than Ford as a whole own the Puma name in this car-naming context and decided to apply this already used name to a clean sheet design.

Ironically, though the Puma wasn't the new Capri, the actual new platform that most resembles the Capri is the car the Capri was meant to resemble in the first place, the Mustang. And the irony for me is this; even though the Mustang is still on sale Ford have taken its name and badge and applied it to an SUV.

Cougar was also used as an SUV badge, albeit spelled Kuga.

It's almost as if people buy lots of SUVs.

I think it failed because of the name. And only because of the name. They could have called it MILF and had the same response.

Similar the probe/penis

Indeed, and I'm sure calling two completely different cars by a name that sounds the same led to all sorts of fun* at motor factor parts desks across the nation...

That car seems to live in or around Horley, I've seen it a few times.  186k on the clock and same owner since 1990.
Looks like this car is going to need some money spent on it soon as the advisory list was quite large this time.

An interesting one, at work they've taken half the car park and are building a new part of the factory.

Now, one of our drivers collars me the other day. "Is your car covered in overspray?" 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Turns out it is, a fine grey like aerosol mist.  (Not sure if it's paint, or a sealant type deal.) I told my boss my number plate and now the insurance agent rang to discuss, a claim or some such shite.

However, the car paint is already fucked and has a maingy roof and lacquer peel.

Fuck sake.

One of our drivers roaming about in a brand new hire car, they went to his house to take pics, massaged both cheeks and finished him off.

... I've heard nothing, I'm at work today and spoke to one of the women in the office for about 16 decades. Her car got done too, they said it's a clay bar and lacquer job... Except if it's on a piece of plastic, then it's a replacement part. But they said "yeah, there's a courtesy car.... Collect it yourself." She said nope, you're dropping it off.

Anyway, let's be honest, let's talk write off and buy back. Which they've done to two guys at work. One car he bought for £300 and another £500. The write off they're paying is £1200 and £200 buy back.

I need to ring the woman from insurance in morn, because I'm the only one without any bastard idea what's happening. If they offer me £50 write off and £400 buy back I'll be annoyed.

I wanted a small runaround which was better on fuel than my CR-V for sharing commuting duties and I've been missing my old Puma - I had a Millenium about 2 years ago but that turned out to be a badly described pile of mould and rust so didn't last.

A quick search on Facebook Marketplace pulled up this one - correct wheels, correct 1.7 Yamaha engine, decent colour and low mileage with plenty of MOT for a sensible price, only 20 miles away.  The owner turned out to have several and was thinning out his collection, properly nice old chap who's now into Boxsters instead.  I viewed it in the dark and pouring rain earlier in the week, left a deposit and got a lift over yesterday to collect it.

I love it - these are very addictive little cars and this one drives superbly, as it should with only 64k on it.  Heavily undersealed, minimal welding needed over the years and rear arches intact if not in great condition, it's barely moved for 2 years and for £1,100 I was happy.

What caught me by surprise when I picked it up was the extra folder of paperwork that came with it - he'd shown me the fastidious records he'd kept in the last 6-7 years so I knew about that but I hadn't realised there was an enormous Motorpoint folder which has literally every receipt and invoice since 2000 in it, including the sales paperwork and a photo of the car when brand new taped to the front of it.  Turns out the first owner had it 13 years and took exceptional care of it, I'm a total geek for that stuff so I'm made up with that.  I also found that the service book is so full there's a second one with it and it has a full Ford service history with the same dealer up to 2013 and 57k miles - it's only done another 7k since then and has been serviced and maintained since.

The oil is very clean but has been in there a couple of years, the timing belt is due on time if not mileage and the tyres, whilst a matching set of Michelins (a first for me, my stuff usually has to go straight to the tyre centre to lose whatever mismatched budgets it came on) are quite old.  They're still looking good though and have loads of grip so I will let them stay for now and keep an eye on their condition.

Verdict: I've lucked out, with a little bit of maintenance and care over the next few months, this can become a really, really nice example.

Oh, and if you know Pumas and think those wheels aren't right on a 2000 X plate, you're right, they'd moved on to spoked wheels by then.  In the first owner's paperwork stack is an invoice from the Ford dealer for 4 alloy wheels at the time of sale; it appears he specifically got the turbine ones added on.

That looks great. I've had a 1.7 Thunder for a few years and love it - they're such good fun and still cheap to buy, although prices are creeping up and you do see some crazy prices from some dealers.

I need to swap mine for an estate car quite soon, but I'm sure I'll miss it!

I bought a steering wheel. It is made out of 100% pure brown.

While it's in better condition than my current steering wheel, it's just starting to fall apart and will no doubt end up in the same state as mine next year. Plastidip time I think!

Went to Diddly Squat Farm today

The masses were out the front in the "2 hour" queue in the spitting rain, while the canny were in the barn behind enjoying bacon baps while sitting at picnic tables and buying their token t-shirts and mugs from the table in there instead

It was pretty clear  from the outfits of those in the queue out front that they weren't there for the kale...   Then the heavens opened.

Anyhow the baps were tasty, the daughter was happy, and on the way down the lane away from it all, saw that Kaleb fella turning int' lower field on that Lamborghini tractor.

Tomorrow, Bourton on the Water car museum perhaps

Also disabled that really annoying beep on ignition off that Sony Head Units do to remind you to remove the faceplate. Irritatingly it forgets all it's settings when you disconnect the power.

ooh...ooh...ooh - tell me how, please mister.
