There has been chipping on the Audi's sill for a time and any attempt at touching it in has been thwarted by the bottom rubber strip rubbing the paint off before it dried.

I found some masking tape and have cans and cans of Hammerite which I originally bought for the now departed Clio.

So I decided to have a proper go today.

Rubbed down the chipped areas.

Masked off.

Cardboard rally flaps

First coat done, followed by another 5.

And done.

It's a bit blacker than it's meant to be but I reckon a few drives to the shops in next week's rain will weather it down.

Taken the cars out for a shakedown. 

944s ABS light is on, no doubt something I've done when being heavy handed removing the wing. Will have to look at that but its driveable. 

Meg also driving well, stuttered a couple of times going up a hill but I think its fine. 

Not looked at the Legacy yet. Will do that in a bit.

I spent a while yesterday chopping lumps out of this poor old thing.

This was one of the bits needed,spare wheel well it has a bracket underneath that a also supports the fuel tank strap.

Mine was rusty,and also the bolt broke off inside.

Chop it out and a session with the welder later,we have this.

Happy enough with that,

fuel filler neck tomorrow, not looking forward to that one.

I had it delivered this morning so I didn't have unnecessary contact with people, and feeling bold I took it on an essential run to Sainsbury's.  Paintwork is flat, but for an ADO16 it's mostly solid, and despite only doing 800 miles in 14 years the engine runs really well.  Makes me realise the Metro could do with a tune up.  Plus it should keep me busy for a while.

That is amazing Rob. Well done. I do like an ADO16.

I love 1100s, never had one though. I have tried to buy one (or a 1300) a few times and every time the deal went flat. Once travelled into te wilds of Cornwall for one and the chap wanted good money for what he said was a 'mint' car. It wasn't mint by any stretch but still worth buying but he wouldn't move on the price which was a couple of thousand or maybe more (memory - senile).

I would love one sometime though.

I have had an 1800 and a 2200 which are just 1100s on steroids so pretty much the same!

Bit more on scooter tooke everything off and still was locked up when spark plug in, was going to remove Reed valve but has security bolt I could get at, so fill with wd40 and forced compressed air, and noticed whilst cranking it over notice oil pumping out of where oil pump fitted, once this slowed down I thought I'd put spark plug in and I could crank over.. so quickly put it all back together and fire up..

As you will have seen my Metro and Invacar are for sale.

I've done a lot of thinking since lockdown, and while I'm not keen in sharing all the inner workings of my mind* on a public forum....I've decided I need to focus on 'core business'. 

That core business is keeping two 90's hatchbacks running as daily cars as long is reasonably possible. (Mondy and Mazda)  That's what I'm happiest doing, and everything else from Renner 16 dreams to microcar madness is a wilful distraction.

I think I might have to pull back from the forum a bit (no flouncing!!) because while you are all fantastic people, christ you don't half enable some of my worst tendencies!

While I very much hope you don’t step back, that sounds extremely sensible and very much what I should do if I was even remotely grown up about life. Which you have to be, sometimes.

As alluded to earlier, I finally got the V70's nearside rear door open this afternoon. 

Resetting the rear ECU (as suggested on a Volvo forum) didn't work.  Next idea was to remove the exterior door handle and see if anything had come apart / broken off there.  According to the Haynes manual, to get the external handle off you have to reposition the window guide channel for access, and in order to do that you need to remove a bolt which is - you guessed it - inaccessible with the door closed.  I just about managed to get a 10mm spanner on the retaining nuts with the window channel in place, and after a lot of wiggling and a bit of swearing I got the metal retaining bracket off - that wasn't a pleasant job as being a dark blue car that had sat in strong sun all day, all the metal bits were boiling hot.  Once that was off though I was able to push the handle assembly partially out of the door from the inside, then go round and finish removing it from the outside.  I then had direct access to the catch mechanism and could operate the opening lever directly.  Except that didn't work either.

After much fiddling, levering various bits with a big screwdriver to see if getting them to move a bit further than normal would make them work (to no avail), I got pissed off and smashed the plastic casing off the catch with said screwdriver to reveal the inner workings of the catch, many of which promptly fell out into the door.  I couldn't fully see what I was doing as I couldn't get the plastic cover completely off due to the aforementioned window channel being in the way, but after a while of poking the screwdriver in and levering every bit of brass I could see in every direction I could think of, and flicking the assorted plastic bits this way and that, eventually the door popped open.  I was then able to remove the window channel bolt and move that out of the way to take the plastic cover off completely, at which point most of the rest of the mechanism fell out and I was unable to get the catch to operate any more.

What I was able to do, however, was access the fixing bolts and get the whole bloody thing out of the door.  Which was good.  The door is now held shut with a ratchet strap going to the offside grab handle, and I've shoved the external door handle back in its hole to make it less obvious.  I now need to order a new catch mechanism, but it's only about 15 quid for a secondhand one - so I'm going to call that a win, given that last week it was looking like a session with an angle grinder and then £lots for a replacement door in the right colour.

That and fixing the nearside front indicator (thought it was a blown bulb but it was just a dodgy contact in the bulb holder) is about all the fettling I've got done today.  I was going to have a go at doing the rear brake pads on the 75, but when I was flicking through the Haynes manual to see if there were any rinkydinks I should be aware of, I spotted a warning in bold type saying "be sure to clamp the brake flexi before winding the piston back in, otherwise the reverse flow of brake fluid can flip the master cylinder seal and result in a complete loss of braking".  Or words to that effect.  My brake hose clamps are currently on the Volvo, and the ones I ordered to do the Merc's brakes haven't turned up yet, so I've postponed that job to another time.

It sounds like you're being sensible there, @egg, whatever your personal reasons behind it, hopefully the two cars will find the right owners.

We've been plugging away at the house and finally got to the point we could clear out and clean up the conservatory-sunroom-extension-thingy which had thus far been used as a workroom.  We were going to redo the walls since we didn't like the blotchy paint finish, or the colour that much, so the first job was to clean them down once we'd cleared out the old flooring.  There was more newspaper under the flooring (because of course there was, every room in the house has had this problem), this time dating from 2006 and the walls... well...

That's not mould (thankfully), it's algae.  The floor is a concrete pad that had a layer of newspaper, then a layer of polythene, and then a layer of lino. and the newspaper was soaked.  Judging by how quickly everything dried out after removing all the flooring we're hoping that it was the combination of bad materials causing a moisture trap rather than anything more serious but wow, I've never seen interior walls covered so uniformly in algae that it looked painted, that's a new one on me.

Rusty fuel filler this time.

Outside wasn't too bad. 

Inside was rusty though,

Nothing for it but to chop it out carefully. 

I cut the replacement part oversize,to make it quicker and easier to weld back in.No point pissing about,a lap weld is much stronger.

Welding this in was a pain.

Then it was time to sort the outside.

Carefully marked then cut the rotten bit out.

A bit of a pain to get the replacement part to fit neatly.

Then welded it in slowly,even though I really took my time,the panel still warped a small bit,FFS!

Still it looks decent enough. 

Didnt fully seam the top as i lapped it under the panel,and thats where it warped slightly.

Had to fit two nutserts into this after welding it in as the self rappers holding the fuel flap on decided they didn't want to tighten up anymore.

Wheel arch on the same quarter panel tomorrow. 

I'm off for a cuppa.

Since standby mode was initiated by my employer, I have endeavoured to maintain a bouyant mental outlook. As the screw of necessity is paused from propelling your reluctant body into a job you feel less than indifference towards, the diem for personal revolution must surely be carpe’d.

With the fitness routine of Max Cady, a diet that would give Phineus green eyes and a progressive attitude to daytime intoxication, I sensed a renaissance manifesting. 

Rebirth completed, an expanse of hours at one’s disposal and a sparklingly irrigated inbox aching for a filling, some tactile relief was called for. 

I have found myself strongly drawn towards Ford’s Ka (a damning indictment of confinement) but a lack of storage at my home and all of my tools stuck at work, I had to lateralise my thinking.

And then I happened upon Petrolize’s clearance sale! 

Here was the chance to buy into the Ka dream without the associated woes of storage, running costs and the malignance of corrosion.

It turned up today and, upon inspection, my joy dissolved and an order was placed with Bacofoil for an 8’ x 4’ sheet.

I can’t express the complexities of my feelings but I can tell you that I am now wearing a synthetic fur suit as my wife and our two feline daughters furiously rub balloons over me whilst I try to weld tin foil sill repairs to this 1:64 Ford Ka using my fingertips, like fucking Raiden.

Yes, I'll keep the Mondeo thread going. Slowsilver has just re-confirmed the popularity of these fine steeds on here.  Well, confirmed that lots of people have good memories of them, but fewer probably actually want to own one today...

I'll also keep the Mazda one ticking over. Although the poor old Mazda isn't loved by so many! It's no K11.  Although I think Barrett thinks it is an acceptable modern - that's endorsement enough from one of our taste makers!

some of you may be old enough to remember Conder Structures? they went under 25 plus years ago.

well he was working there just before they went pop. 

he bought something like £1,000 of their shares, at something like a penny each.

they went up to something like 1.5p a share, which was where he was going to bail out.

by the time he went to the bank at dinnertime to sell them, Conders had gone under. and with it, his money.
