Viewed an xud engined car today (first car I've looked at with a view to buying for some years! So a momentous step for me :-) really liked it,only real concern I have is an oil leak on the engine.some seems to be on top of the head nuts, which would suggest rocker cover, easy. However also a lot on the lower engine mount/cam belt pulley area, which from what I've read briefly could be head gasket.anyone got any sage advice? Of course it could still be rocker cover, accumulating over time

Rockerr cover leaks are common on the xud engine as are the camshaft seal weeping. Easy enough to do though.

Got the roof down on the 80 today, it was a bit of a war because I didn't know what I was doing. It's actually quite simple now that I know though.

This is my first ever soft top car and it was great to just sit in it with no roof on. It was way, way too cold to go for a drive though as it was around 2 degrees maximum, even in the sun.

That's what clothes are for man, to keep you warm when driving with the roof down.

My colleague who did the same exam as me on Friday was not amused when I dropped the roof of the MGF on the way there. Once moving though, he admitted he was quite enjoying it.

Basically, I think split_pin needs MOAR BEARD so he doesn't feel the cold;)

It can be too wet, but it's never too cold (or dark) to put a roof down.

I said that, but he has no heating in the car

Meet the family's new (to me). 2004 RR HSE 3.0 TD6. Always wanted one since hiring an RR 4.4 V8 Westminster back in 2012. This one's not nearly as rapid, but it is a lovely place to be and travel in. This example is a 3 owner car, the last owner for the last 6 years, owner previous to that was the owner of a local(ish) 4x4 independent garage, so it has been properly serviced and well looked after even. Mileage is knocking on 150k, but it's already had the, ahem, gearbox rebuilt at around 100k and all 6 injectors replaced at about the same time. It drives very well and parking sensors aside, is fault free. No really. Comes with a nice set of 20" rims and 2 new tyres on the front which are Nexens, which match the nearly new rears. Oil N filter just done and all the other filters replaced at previous service. Spent most of today giving it jolly good clean on the outside which shows up that it needs some paint correction and a bloody good polish, which on a car of this size is a two day job.... Also fitted with a towbar and not just any towbar. A Westfalia towbar with 7 and 13 pin RR electrics. I think I now need a caravan, or a boat, or both?

Day 2 into ownership, I'm really quite happy with my latest purchase and although it has the potential to be ruinous to my modest bank balance, I obviously hope not and have taken out AA Breakdown Insurance to help offset some of that risk. While the HSE is tremendous value in what you get for the money, it will not be cheap to run in terms of fuel etc.

I'm not to bad with the spanners and from what I can see mechanically at least, these cars are quite straightforward to work on, so that should help keep the running costs down. First job on the list is new rear discs and pads to match that which are pretty recent on the front. Discs, pads and sensor kit was £69.95 delivered from one of the many LR wholesalers. Quite looking forward to working on the oily bits, next weekend.

So there you have it, folks. Meet the new kid on the block. Ronnie the Red Range Rover. Cheers Hawkaye.

Going by what is often said about RR ownership, you better get used to this view from the drivers seat... ;)

Any chance of a push, mister? It's been said before and I'll say it again. It's a lovely place to wait for the AA man/woman. :)

P.S. Nearly forgot. The ICE isn't working due to an, ahem, faulty amplifier.... Seller is supplying and fitting a used replacement when it arrives in the post. Not the Logic 7 system, sadly, but less to go wrong and 11 speakers 100w RMS should be plenty enough for Kenny Bruce.

Today I set about making one of our brick sheds into somewhere I can tinker about.

Got a halogen floodlight in Poundland for £2, few meters of flex and a plug.. mounted and ran the flex round and tacked it down the wall. No electric in the shed so will just run an extension reel from the kitchen when I’m out there.

Second job was to make a work bench. Got a piece of worktop for free from an old IT suite at work that was recently ripped out, a free fence post from the maintenance team.. chopped the post up and voila....

Just need to clean it all and paint now.

I went for a walk this morning - nothing too strenuous just 8miles in Surrey, but didn’t spot much of interest. Here is the Mercedes gracing a Hurtwood control carpark.attachicon.gifEB46DBB4-80D5-4EA4-8A07-FF1927D4DE17.jpeg

Also two elderly brick railway bridges for Mrs6C to identify.

Hmmm... both are on the old South Eastern and Chatham Railway's Reading branch between Chilworth to the west and Gomshall to the east...

The first is Brook Lane (Dark Lane) bridge on Little London lane, bridge no. 19/1290, ELR & mileage: RSJ 37m 5ch

The second is Sandy Lane bridge, bridge no. 19/1293, ELR & mileage: RSJ 37m 1052y

^^ I can't even remember what I ate for breakfast this morning, let alone fathom how someone can have a pictorial memory on fairly nondescript railway bridges.

The good lady said “Do you want an instant turn on?” whilst shielding her phone to keep whatever dirty picture she had on the screen from me...

“What are you going to do show me a picture of a Maestro for sale” says I

She turns her phone to reveal.... a Red Austin Maestro for sale just 10 miles away

Oh how we laughed!!

I’ll message about a viewing tomorrow....

My new* transit tipper which was working fine when I picked it up on Friday has developed a fault.

I tipped some firewood out and the tipper body wouldn't go back down. There's a solenoid that operates the return valve, allowing the body to lower under its own weight. I think it has died.

It sits over this shaft on the valve body.

The shaft doesn't appear to move, so I'm not sure how it works.

Any hydraulic knowledge out there?

I made another boring vid. Turn the volume down because of the tractor noise.

The whole railway / railway modelling thing is a fantastic test for preserving your memory.

A good friend was clearing out a deceased relatives flat and came across these On The Road periodicals. 7 volumes with about 10 issues in each volume. Car maintenance guides in 1970s style.

When she found them she thought "Well nobody in the world is gonna be interested in these other than Jim Bell."

Obv she's not familiar with Autoshite.

These will keep me entertained for a while though.

10/10 tick VG. Don’t know how you found the second one I couldn’t see any plaques at all.
