who's got wood?

My old Cavalier Gsi had wood* inserts on the door cards. Except they were plastic. Let's be honest, if it was real wood, it would have been rotten after five minutes, much like most GM products of that era.

Disclaimer: I really liked the thing and would have another, if there were actually any left.

My old frowny face Fiesta Ghia mk4 had pretend wood, even the stereo front was mottled brown plastic barring the removable keycode bit, nafftastic

320touring has slagged off the LS400s wood on his blog-wood that Lexus apparently went to Yamaha for to get the same stuff they used in their pianos!

I fear you may be confusing "keyboards" with "pianos"

I think the only remotely modern cars with wood that looks half decent is Rovers. Not a fan of it on any other modern-Ish cars!

I had a 52 plate mk4 Astra 'Comfort' spec which had a wood effect centre console and gearknob, it looked so awful I changed it for the Matt silver one from SXi/SRi spec as it was only £10 from Vauxhall, cheaper than a stick on kit off ebay. The wooden effect bits on mk6 Escort Ghias and the wooden effect dash and door strips on Vectra Cs and prefacelift Astra H Elite specs looked awful as well, especially with the black rather than light coloured interior.

Speaking of faux wood, I saw a Volvo 740 estate on the motorway the other day that had decals made to look like wood panels on the sides of it, like those old American station wagons you used to get with the wood bits on the side panels. It looked horrific!

Not a big fan of bits of shaved forest in my cars.   Even bought my 190E without it which is actually quite difficult.   I think it was the discovery that what I thought was veneer on my Grandad's P6 appeared to be actually some kind of formica offcut from a Duple Viceroy.    Modern stuff is even worse, especially those half-timbered steering wheel things which look like they belong on a de luxe spec mobility scooter.

Don't mind Fablon-flanked Yank wagons, though - just don't want it inside!

Rover 100s of the Metro NCAP horror era have the most half-arsed approach to dashboard timber. It's just glued to the dash is slabs.

I've got 4 pieces of 4x2 and a bit of ply in my 305 van, does that count ?

The 4x2 is planed so looks a bit posh.

One of the worst attempts is the Vel Satis. Not that it is so bad to look at, but the attempt to describe it as "marquetry". LMAO, it is pine with a few square dowels of mahogany mortised into it!

The R8 chariot of beigeness has this feature - actually suits it well. Not real wood tho' is it? (Can't be arsed to go and check!).

It's proper wood, actually, as befits a quality* AR product.

no wood in the spaceship that has brushed aluminiplastic!

A poor effort from me, only 2/3 of the current fleet have woody dashes

Jaguar used to know how to make veneer look like actual wood.  Here's a rare thing - an XJ-S (mine) without the lacquer being all cracked.  It's scruffy in plenty of other ways, of course.

Jaguar were masters of "perceived quality" decades before VW accountants even became aware of the concept.

Aren't there stories of William Lyons ordering office-grade staples for the upholstery shop because they were marginally cheaper than proper automotive-grade ones ?

Granada mk2 Ghia:  Dash wood is plastic, door cappings are real.  And therefore a bit water-damaged (but very fixable).

Soz for lack of actual wood in the picture - I'd take another, but the car is no longer mine (goes away to cry in a corner).

That's all I can find, a bit underwhelming.

Think out of 11 vehicles only the Defender and 25 have no wood.

Real wood only in the 75 and the 64 2000!

They are actually wood. I have a spare set in my loft someone took off. I was always a little dubious but the back of them is definitely wooden

Went in a taxi in Lanzerote, a Merc 250D, had a little pine box he had made on the centre console to keep his change in. Had a lid on it and he'd varnished it as well. Irreparably damaged the console with how he'd screwed it on like.

In contrast to Rover's later pipe and slippers efforts, the SD1 managed to successfully mix a futuristic dashboard with traditional wood and leather. On the dash are a few heavy slabs of real walnut whilst the door cards get flimsy imitation plastic.

I made the Locosts dash out of marine ply, does that count?

I just discovered an old pic of my V70 T5 which had some shiny "wood" and remembered that the XM also has it!

My Golf GTI Mk3 had door caps of walnut, but can't find any pics of it or the 1275GT dashboard.
