Another one!

But this was a grey and red elephant not a "white elephant" as you call it.

Solid car. No excuse needed, just go drive.

Don't forget tonight from 7.30pm is Autosite Zoom.

Don't forget tomorrow from 10am is tea and chat at the FoD.

For joining instruction for Zoom or the address for FoD please pm me.

Just for interest, did you know a few years ago we had a Wolseley 18/85 Auto. We never owned it but the owners had nowhere to keep it so we stored it with usage permission for about a year.

The bonnet on the Herald behind was just perched because the engine was out of it, we still have that Herald.

Looks like better weather than here, it's chucking it down at the moment!

I got 70 miles into the journey last night when I was alerted by a slight burning rubber smell. Pulled into a Pizza Hut car park and smoke was coming from the alternator belt, and sparks coming from the AC compressor clutch bearing. Ordered a pizza (well, might as well seeing as I'm there!), wandered into the nearby Sainsburys to get some spray oil to stop it seizing, and limped back home keeping the revs down.

Nice to catch up with folks, even if it was only a brief visit on my part.  Sadly a pretty extensive to do list at home meant I couldn't stick around.  Looked like I didn't time it badly though given that the heavens opened about 30 seconds after I got through the door at home!  Glad I didn't have to drive through that.

A good turnout for Tea and Chat on the 28th Dec saw the FoD yard filled with interesting cars.

Our best friend the diesel heater did a fine job of making the party tent inside the door less barn a tolerable temperature.

If Talbot gets any older I will have to ban him for being a fire hazard!

This morning was a trip out  in the Sigma to a small local classic car gathering. There was a good turnout considering  waves of light rain.

What do you think of the Renault Fuego?

I think they are one of the most stunning car designs ever.

Soon after launch in January 1981 I tried to buy a new Fuego 2.0 TX but fell out with the dealer over him wanting to charge me £58 for a load cover that I felt should have been included and as it was the new model he would not budge on price.

In 2004 I made my dream come true and bought a silver 1981 Fuego GTS, it was low mileage and in beautiful condition.

Even in 2004 there were not many Fuego’s for sale in the UK so I settled for this 1647cc GTS instead of the 2.0 Ltr I really desired. Disappointed was the word to sum up owning it. This stunning shape was propelled by a low powered engine with dull handling and body roll. When Mrs6C suggested I sell it before it dissolved after 18 months as we were keeping it outside it did not seem such a bad idea.

I agree. After a brief dalliance with a Fiat 128, my Dad switched to Renault for the next 20-odd years - saloon and estate 12s, a 14, 18 and then a flow of 20s and 25s. I always wanted him to get a Fuego but it wasn't deemed practical enough for a family.

I always thought that the Fuego was a cool car. My work colleague had a turbo with Turbo written on he bottom of the doors in big letters.

His was quite rusty though and he ended up trading it in under the scrappage scheme as he could get more money for it that way. Shame

The only thing I recall about the Fuego is some automatic car washes having signs saying “No Renault Fuegos”.

I imagine the rear window was quite vulnerable to breaking when the top brush moved along the car.

I thought & still do think they looked great, really cool.

The dashboard always looked a bit crappie though in comparison to the outside to me.

I always thought they looked like the French effort at designing a 924.

Edit: Looks like I'm not the only one.

There was one of these and a Matra Simca Bagheera that would park in the resident's parking outside my digs in London (1982).
The Renault was lovely looking thing and I thought it rather nice tbh. I thing the motoring press here slaughtered them though? One of the mags did a Fuego vs 924 piece that I thought was a bit naughty - maybe the Sirocco would have been a better comparison?

[edit] - not the first to mention that eh? I guess they just looked too alike which, back in the day, was kind of unusual. These days?

[edit, edit]- we've never owned a Fuego but if our 924 was anything to go by then neither would be a show stopper performance-wise these days. I'd still have either though - Renault only if it's not too crispy underneath.

Fuego is a great design in my eyes. There was a red one which lived on my route to school when I was a kid, and we walked past it for years until one day it just disappeared…

Ive consigned the Fuego to “cars I would love to own, but never will” pile.
