How do you feel when you see your old car?

Just back from raiding the Citroen Car Club's DS rally at the weekend where I managed to sell the LNA and see my old DSpecial up for sale.

It was odd to see my old car again, its looking a little bit worse for wear, with rust bleeding through in a few places. It felt a bit like bumping into an ex but without the awkward conversation. Am I alone in this or is this a normal feeling.

For the Sunday we sneaked home and came back in the Allegro parking it slap bang in the field with the DS line up  , was quite surprised by the amount of Allegro love in the field. The oddest thing happened on the way home when we hooned down the A41 to J20 of the M25. Wound roxy up on the slip road burning off a C3 and spotted a familar shape in the distance. On closer inspection it was a Reynard coloured VDP 1500. So we stopped for a natter, but what are the odds?

Old cars can always be an issue. Take my BX 'Safari' for instance! It was great when I owned it and the two of us drove it around France. Then I sold it to a friend with no money and it's in a bit of a state. This is the one time I've taken a car back and sorted it out. Getting on top of its issues now!

Most of my old cars have been scrapped, which at least stops me encountering them again. Others won't be missed, though I do wonder what happened to my old Westminster and the CX Familiale. I'm hoping Rover P6B TBH 249J is still out there somewhere as well.

You should never have sold the Green Tiger, glad you got her back. Forgot you had the Westminster...why did you sell it again?

I feel sad when I go into the 'tinned' section of the supermarket.

I have mixed feelings when i see our old car on the road over here. In the UK it would have probably been written off. It was hit hard in the side by a bloke in a Pathfinder and bent the chassis leg, a-pillar and sill. It was then pretty poorly repaired at the body shop. The sill was still bent under the trim cover and had been padded out with black silicon, and painted over. The a pillar was pulled out a bit but was still dented abd the door hinge was shimmed to get the door to shut. After that I still had to get the chassis straightened to get it to drive straight by a dodgy bloke in a shed who had a set of chains, block and tackle concreted into the floor, and a tape measure.

Now, i told the bloke who bought it about the accident, the repair and the "chassis adjustment" and he was happy with it and the price he paid, but still.

Sold the Westy due to the house move. Perhaps I shouldn't have, but then I wouldn't have had the garage available for the 2CV/Mini winter before last. Was bloody scary to do because I was selling it prior to the Westy banger race. Still taxed happily, and still also down as 2660cc when it should be 2639...

The Westy was the perfect classic ownership in a way. Bought it private for £2200, did nothing to it other than a service and greasing, had some nice drives in it (commuting up the A1(M) in a 50+ year old car is an awesome experience) then sold it hurriedly at auction for £2050. I wish I could make the sums work more often. If I'd had more time to flog it privately, I might even have made a profit!

Worried that someone is bringing the bloody thing back.

a mate of mine now has my old Capri.

He's spending a bit on it too which is nice to see, but he lives in a bit of a dodgy area where there is a problem with 'rowdy youths' and car fires. The car is parked on the road so its future is up in the air.

For the vast majority of them I couldn't give a flying one. Only about ten at most of all the cars I've owned I regret selling.

I've never seen my old 100E, but I basically sold the shell because I'd pretty much written it off when I crashed it. Someone on Retro Rides bought my Pop, then it disappeared for a bit, then a hotrodder I know bought it and it was looking a bit sorry for itself. I think he tore it apart after a bit to modify it and then it got sold as an unfinished project. It would probably upset me slightly to see it gathering dust, partially cut up.

Never seen a former car on the road. I did do a DVLA search last year and found a pretty dismal survival rate. To be honest there are a few that I don't want to check, as I'll be genuinely sad to see them scrapped.

My old Chammy coupe turned up on t'interweb a couple of months back after being MIA from the Doovla database for 12 years. Glad to see its still about, not so keen on the colour scheme but thats up to them. I am happy that its still around. The colour scheme can be reversed.

For the vast majority of them I deny all knowledge of ever selling them to the happy customer in the first place. The large amount of SIM cards floating in the River Dee are now classed as a marine hazard. Only about ten at most of all the cars I've owned I regret selling.

Very, very pleased in the case of my Starlet - see pic's Trigger posted of it at Foxhall. It's ended up on the oval, but in the best way possible! Terry's doing more with than I'd have done, I can only be pleased that I bought it, had some fun with it and moved it onto a good home.

I know a couple of Laurels I had 10+ years ago are both still around, and again having more TLC lavished upon them than I could manage.

Better to think of those than the ones that have been scrapped or ended up as perpetual project cars.

The only car that I've ever seen after selling it, was the Stanza. The last time I saw it, was on a t-shirt being worn by someone who wasn't even the owner. I am not making that up.

Posted

I saw my old BMW 535i on Homes Under the Hammer. It was in the background in an estate in Winchester or something. I'd sold it to a guy from Skye so it'd got around.

Sierra Sapphire - scrapped

Volvo 240 - scrapped

Austin A40 Farina - restored by new owner. That one I'd like to see again, but I can't remember the reg and don't have a picture with it in :/

Part of the reason I have no plans to part with my current two if I can help it is that I don't think a new owner could look after them like I do and that they'd both be run into the ground and scrapped because they're not exactly the most prized of things in the car world.

Everything I've owned prior to The Volvo (1989 Ford Fiesta, 1994 Rover 200, 1988 Volvo 240) is long-gone, but I saw the Rover on the road in 2005, a year after I sent it to the scrapyard

Maybe he works in Staples and gets staff discount on Stabilo Boss highlighters.

Sadly I never have.

The only two that I hope are still around because they're on SORN is my second Super Minx, DDM 798C and my old FD Victor wagon, XRU 853K.

All the rest have long since been turned into paperclips and baked beans cans. Would buy the Hillman back in an instant if I knew it was up for sale.

My Maestro is now owned by garycox of this parish so that's in good hands!

My old A35 VGX 231 was sold via Ebay a couple of years ago to a couple who came down and drove it back to Lincolnshire. At the A30/35 club rally in Lichfield last week, I saw it parked on the rally field. Filthy dirty, all the rusty bits painted over with the wrong shade of blue, headlight peaks fitted  , the household carpet I fitted covered with a proper carpet set and radial tyres rather than crossplies. Oh and about 12,000 more miles on the clock!

I do miss my 2CV. The rusty chassis snapped in half in the accident, so I flogged it on Ebay, after using the insurance payout to buy the Maestro and Cambridge. It has since been converted into a van, with a new chassis, interior, floors, sills, pretty much everything really. It's strange to think that if I hadn't won that set of A35 wheels for £5 on Ebay and gone to collect them in the 2CV that day then I would probably be rebuilding that now and would never have bought the Maestro or Cambridge. Strange how things work out.

My Landcrab was sold via Ebay to a couple in Westcliff. I pass it all the time, but it's under a cover on their driveway and doesn't seem to ever move.

I sold my 1100 to some bellend who flogged it straight on for a profit to a young lad from Colchester, who's a member of the Morris Minor club young members Facebook group. I was pleasantly surprised to see pictures of it on there, and he was equally surprised that I used to own it! Anyway, it looks to be in good hands, he's not doing any daft 'mods' to it and is slowly getting it up to a good standard. Which is great.

I think the only one of my cars that is no longer with us is the black A35 I sold to Torsten, that was subsequently stolen from him. :(

What colour was your Farina, there was one at Wollaton Autokarna.

The only previous car I owned I did see once was a Fiat Punto, about 2 years after I had sold it, still looked good but a quick check showed it had been scrapped in May 2010 same time as the scrappage scheme was running,I think.

In real terms i've not had that many cars compared to most

However an old Anglia estate I had when I was 18 (in 1988) just turned up on ebay in Portsmouth (I live in Yorkshire) looked in sorry state and seller was trying to pass it off as 30,000 genuine (i sold it with 98,000!!) Would have bought it back if closer.

My old BMW 2500 - no idea where that went

Austin 3 litre - disappeared

Standard 10 - went to Swindon never seen again

Anglia 1200 123e - still with guy I sold it to 20 years ago

Mitsubishi Lancer - sold to a friend and still going strong

Viva - Crushed :( (I wanted that back so much - last saw it in Bradford looking totally shagged)

Austin 1300 - crushed (want another !!)

Anglia estate (not one above) disappeared but rumour has it it's in the Gateshead area condition unknown.

Standard Anglia - No idea, last seen in Chesterfield

Think thats it - Out of all the cars above I would have had the 1300 and Viva as the most missed.

I've seen both my first 2cv and the aggro on Facebook (2cv was sold within the club and a 2cving friend spotted the aggro at a local show). I'mfairly happy they are/were looked after and if no longer with us it'll have been for good reason (un-economical repair or something).

I miss both cars, but probably wouldn't ever buy them back.

The one that got away was the beige 2cv. Wish wish wish I'd have found a way to keep it. As far as I know it's awaiting restoration or something.

On the other hand, I'd get shot of the astra tomorrow if we hadn't spent(wasted) so much money on it! But I suppose I'm never going to get too attached to a car I never drive and only really touch when it's broken.

Most of my old cars are baked bean tins or washing machines.

Occasioanlly I see our old Multispace, still as battered and bruised as when we had it. Our old Xantia is still going and one of my BX's is still alive but in another part of the country so I never see them. I cant say I feel any real emotional attachment other than regret at selling the BX but I really dont have any emotional feelings towards them. Same with houses really. Yes I look at our old house and think "oooh, they have added an en suite bathroom to the bedroom, I wonder what that looks like then" but apart from that its not mine any more so why should I give a monkeys?

I keep hoping to see our old Zafira so I can point and laugh at the new owner!

One I did used to like seeing round was a fifty quid all in Fiesta we had out of the auctions. Sold it to a mate if the wife and she had it four or five years and it never gave her a minutes bother. Sadly I think it bit the dust when her daughters boyfriend got his hands on it.

Top of my like to see it again one day would be my old Mk2 Cavalier SRi saloon, D178OTX.

I've seen a few of mine after I've let them go.

Years back I saw my old Princess 2200 was being used as a taxi (!) and they were really letting it go to pot, and recently, though I don't physically "see" them anymore I'm happy to note the current owners of my old Volvo Amazon and the Vauxhall Royale I had last year both giving them some TLC. :D

Very few of my old cars survive - there are some I'd buy back in an instant if they turned up. If any of these are out there, please come home:

Viva E - OFR67P (nicked in 1982, and I'm sure it's long gone)

Fiat 850 - ATB139L (last registered 89, still on DVLA computer)

Saab 96 - 943FWD (last reg 91, still on DVLA computer)

Astra 1200 2-door KCW309W (last reg 96, suspect long gone)

Imp EMS8L (pretty sure it was scrapped in the late 80s)

My Beetle is ATA 193L [/pointless comment]

Anyway... My brother still has my old Fiat Marea. Can't believe it's still going really.

The couple that bought my Bedford camper repaired the bodywork and generally tidied it up. They sent me pictures, which was thoughtful - I was well chuffed because I thought I'd killed it.

My wife's first car, this Citroen AX, was written off in 2001. I subsequently used to see it occasionally - not sure whether it should have been put back on the road, really, the B pillar was pretty bent.
