A 10 minute presentation...AS subject matter.

These type of things tend to be about demonstrating your ability to stand on your hind legs and speaking clearly and passionately about anything,  There is also an element of what HR are talking about.  I did two, back to back presentations for two different organisations on the same day and they both asked for a presentation on the wonders of a UK three pin plug.

A couple of suggestions to guarantee* you get the job:

Do not slag off the cars that the panel have but feel free to humorously have a pop at the parts bin door handles and tail lights on the MDs pride and joy.

You could do it on the joys of owning and running a British car from the 50's/60's/70's. The mounting anxiety you feel as you approach a 'smart motorway'. The sense of relief when you spot the emergency refuge, the terror gripping you as you realise that you have to cover, without mechanical mishap, a whole two miles to the next refuge. The sense of relief and wonder as you finally escape said motorway and find a nice sedate B road, with a pleasant country pub, in which you can have a nice ploughman's, with a pint of stout, to fortify oneself in preparation for the return journey.

Dogging is in ways related to cars.

As endearing as it is I’d probably find something a bit more mainstream like I don’t know… gardening or some project you are involved in. Bullshit if necessary as everyone does this in interviews.

I really wouldn’t do a piece on say running a 20 year Old Ford Focus. I think it’s interesting, as I’ve no doubt you do but an employer will think you are mad and likely to be a nuisance in the future. Let them find out once they’ve employed you that you’d sooner be disembowelled on a sharp stick somewhere remote with a 1% battery than join the companies electric car scheme and join everyone for mandatory after work drinks every Friday. If they get wind that on a Sunday night you are trying to re tap a stripped thread in a caliper carrier for Monday morning they’ll assume you are nuts.

Bad idea, do not imply that you know more about management than the management, at least until you have a seat on the board.

Oh could that be a Venn diagram possibility??

Russet Brown + MDH =

Marina, Allegro, TR7/TR8?

Range Rover is a tricky one, I’m pretty sure early 3 doors came in RB but only the later 4 doors had MDH, so not sure if there was a cross over. Also don’t think Mk1 discovery was available in RB. I’ve clearly got too much time to think about this.

MD is bound to come in in a bad mood because someone in an old banger has scraped his new BMW is a car park this morning.

You could do a ten minute presentation about how asking a question on an internet forum leads to a lot of not really helpful replies 😂

This might be a bit too full on, but is it possible to showcase something voluntary or charitable or community orientated- with a side serving of  you are connected with it in some way?

Major on the cause itself but get in that you are involved- Doubling down on the vibe that

A) you can confidently present

B ) you are an all round decent sort thats worthy of further consideration

It needs to be 10 minutes, not 10 hours. 🤣

I’d give them a 10 minute witty anecdote about how you once corrected a bloke at a Steam Engine rally. A story around having a fight once at a car boot over being shortchanged for a Makita 110v grinder.

Or a tale about a time when you’d booked a long weekend off to A frame a Rover 600 back from Thurso in blow by blow detail. Chances are they’ll offer the job on the spot just to get the fuck out of there.

What do you think the reception would be to

"Work. It's a load of bollocks really isn't it?"

Work. It's a 2 way exploitation.

Six Sigma, why the stigma?

Lean? Is that not just work study with a fancy name?

Identify your audience - try do make whatever you present relatable.

'Old cars your mum and dad had etc..."

Use pictures on a PowerPoint even with some bullet points - but don't read from the PowerPoint.

Keep it light - a couple of judicious jokes can work - be careful.

Talk from experience- use the "I think" people are interested in a point of view.

Photocopy the presentation in case the tech fails.

Keep exactly to time.

Give the talk a few dry runs...maybe record it then you can edit where it flags.

If you get time chill for an hour beforehand - don't just turn up.

Use keyword written prompts/notes to keep your talk flowing.

Don't read a speech.

Keep the visuals interesting - the bored can doze off.

Avoid this:

I've done quite a lot of talking in public - 800 was the most at a venue. It's fun. You'll be fine.

Yea why not? A Mini buyers guide with a bit of history and fun could work. Lots of people like them.

Once a colleague made a presentation about  making a presentation- which whilst seemingly hillarous in the pub, went down not very well.

Well a tutorial on how to make a presentation could work as a presentation - but not as an entirely joke enterprise.

Advice:

Don't write the presentation whilst intoxicated.
