What sad news, sorry to hear that and my condolences, Bub.

Sorry to hear Bub, my deepest condolences.

As others have said, try to focus on the happy times and keep yer chin up as best you can.

My condolences, Bub. I had to watch my sister depart us in similar circumstances last year. We knew she was ill, but the last bit came on very suddenly. I can still picture her now, and seeing her go was one of the worst moments of my life, but I couldn't have not been there. It was about her, not me.

It does get easier, and although you never forget, it becomes part of the memories you have of the person. Like Tim said, it's probably the best way to go, surrounded by those who love you.

Onwards and upwards.

Probably to encourage more people to buy Comprehensive. When I first started buying insurance 6-7 years ago, Third Party was the cheapest you could get as it was the most basic cover, it wasn't encouraged either. As I was paying around 2k to insure an 827 at the age of 24 (with no 'no claims' either) I opted for Third party Fire + Theft as Comprehensive was very expensive.

I can but add to the list of condolences.

Losing a day and handing an assignment in late because of a stomach bug wiping me out yesterday. Still not right now.

FATHA_WAT still not right, even now.

More condolences from me...

Trivial self-centred grump: the price of wallpaper. Bloody hell, I'm glad I'm only doing two rooms and they're small anyway! And then there's all the other stuff you have to buy, that I sold/gave away/flung when we left the country, as I wasn't expecting to own a house again. I still can't believe the cheapest rolls I've bought are a tenner a go though.

Went to do a "big shop" in the Astra except the battery wasn't having it (only been stood since Monday).

So stuck some insurance on the van meaning to fetch my spare battery and charger from my dad's along the way, only that's flat as well, ffs.

I honestly thouht there had been some kind of EMP burst like in "Threads"...

So called my dad to bring the charger and spare battery it then started snowing.

Trying to cut down my fleet of projects, and I've just sent an email enquiring about a very original, one owner Austin Somerset (dry stored for 30 years) that I most definitely DO NOT need. Bah.

1. Post wrap bum gravy still pretty unpleasant.

2. Overdue work still not complete (see point 1). Lecturer says 'being ill' not a good enough excuse for handing in the work late. Uni decided to halve the time we had to write the feature and the contributor got back to me on Tuesday. Also, they're supposed to take 3 weeks to mark our work and I'm still waiting on a piece I handed in at Christmas. Dual standards, what?

3. Going out to do another piece of coursework. Camera will not recognise SD card and the supplied tripod appears to have been used to bludgen someone to death with, and as such is about as stable as a 190k BX pedal box (sorry).

4. Consent and release form will not print.

5. 64GB USB stick apparently needs to keep back 32GB in order to function. Toshiba, you lie - really badly.

Just been bidding on a nice diesel citroen on egay using my smartphone. Won the auction but when I refreshed the page it said I'd been outbid. WTF?? This is the second time that's happened. I've now got a sort of ebay car buying cold turkey effect going on.

Not wishing to ask a stupid question, but, er, isn't Mr Bollox of this very parish trying to shift exactly one of these?

True, but this one was a Xantia estate that runs on vegahol!

my crankshaft saga....

I had a spun shell on a crank, ordinarily i would source another crank, but....

This particular motorbike engine has to have everything matched, the crank/rods/cases/clutch are all unique to the build date and you can't mix and match

Sent the crank off to be spray welded and reground as it had spun a big end shell, this was June 2012, Admittedly I said no big rush, but I phoned them monthly and finally received it last Monday. Having a question mark in my head about bearing sizes I sought the advice of my local engine reconditioners, left it with them and got the phonecall to say..... ITS GOT A CRACK IN IT!!

AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

Its for a motorbike, it has cost me £266 to get the crank spray welded, reground, new big end shells supplied, I've just bought a new set of main shells at £123 so I'm £400 out of pocket and now they want me to send it back, will I ever see it again?

There are no cranks in this country, I can get a secondhand one from America and then it might not fit and the £123 of bearing will be useless and probably not refundable

A crank from America = £300

New crank = £1053.91

What's the appeal of sticking alloys onto Transit vans?

Transit_sportvan_small.jpg

And are they safe to use on a vehicle that might weigh the thick end of 3 tonnes fully laden, and are the usual 40-45 profile tyres proper commercial grade rubber?

Posted

^ If they are the factory supplied ones (SportVan) then I'm sure they are up to the job although I don't think the SWB version can get anything near a 3 tonne laden weight without going seriously overweight. Standard van can only hold something like 750kg IIRC.

However, have to say I quite like the Sport Transit although they are silly expensive.

I am feeling the rage about Trotter vans again. Urge to wield hammers in the general direction of OFAH twats is rising.

I realise that particular one from a Ford publicity shot will probably be OK, but I was more thinking about all the barried ones on these "£349 including tyres" deals you get that are meant to go on Fiestas being fitted to 52 plate LWB hi-tops getting hammered across building sites and the like....

That can't be safe, surely?

Posted

Transits have a pretty monster stud pattern, a set of wanky £349 Halfords multifits with Hoo Flung Dung Low-pros wont fit on one, so I reckon it would take a reasonable effort to find some alloys that would fit on AND be unsuitable for the van-size loading.

Posted

There's a trend for lowering VW Transporters and fitting fake 19" Audi RS6 wheels and tyres to them. They ride dreadfully and the alloys crack.

Just got home from three hours in A&E after collapsing for no apparent reason earlier this evening. I was just standing talking to a couple of friends, started to feel a bit strange so went to lean against the wall, but didn't make it and had to be carried to a chair. Apparently when I was in the chair I then went completely rigid for about 15 seconds, with my head right back and my eyes wide open, but I don't remember any of that. I was unconscious for a couple of minutes - I actually started dreaming - then came to of my own accord, and my first thought was "oh fuck, that really did just happen". I was helped over to a window and the fresh air soon had my brain functioning again, but everything else still felt like it was about to shut down. One of my friends drove me to A&E, where after a lengthy wait and various tests they concluded that I had fainted (yeah, thanks, I'd never have guessed) but couldn't work out why. They ran through a number of reasons that can cause people to faint, but none of them was relevant to me. My blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar levels were all spot on; I'd had a glass of wine with my dinner but nothing else to drink all day, and I'm not on any medication.

So basically I've collapsed for no obvious reason, it's never happened before and nobody seems to know whether it's likely to happen again. GR9. I still feel a bit strange now, although my head is perfectly clear. I'm just glad it happened when I was out socialising - if it'd happened when I was at home I could've clocked my head on something and things could have been a lot worse.

Totally. That last one particularly irked me for some reason. The early series of Only Fools are actually really good but things like this make me want to hate it on principle, based on other people who like the show

Sorry to hear that, Wuvv, whatever it was I hope it passes and doesn't come back.

Wuv: I can actually relate to that, I've had similar happen more than once, though usually when I come round my legs don't work for a while, which is a bit frustrating. The way the Neurologist I saw explained it to me made it sound like I was one of those fainting goats, apparently some people are just prone to blacking out or having fits for no discernible reason, though normally there's a trigger like injury or shock, it's not always the case and it's not a form of epilepsy. Apparently, I'm perfectly fine to use heavy machinery and even to drive because it doesn't affect those activities in the same way as epilepsy would. Like you, all my stats came back healthy and it took them several years to come to the conclusion that "it's weird, but you're just like that". If it happens again, see your GP so they can keep a track of it just in case, otherwise don't worry about it.

Not nice Wuv. My wife had an eposide like this last year, but it was even more unusual because she was sitting down. Out like a light for several minutes. Terrifying, especially as it took an ambulance 28 minutes to get here. "They won't get lost" says the operator. They got lost. Soon the whole fuggin' village knew something was up as the ambulance went all over the sodding place.

Again, they could find absolutely nothing wrong.
