Polishing up my cloudy plastic headlights for the MOT, I wonder if the fog lights lower down are ok. Actually they are very clear because they’re glass and one is badly broken. Good design, make the headlights plastic but the fog lights 3 inches above the road , glass. What sort of idiot thought that was a good idea?

Expected to get a second hand one for £20, but £100+ on eBay.(blobeye Impreza).

I know cracked glass will be an MOT failure but if I just remove it? There’s no legal requirement for front fog lights is there? Anyone know?

As far as I know, no legal requirement for front fog lights

Is the glass sharp and spiky? If not, just leave it.  Not testable.

Your Gov says ............ Fag loits for MOT

4.5.1. Presence, condition and operation

You only need to inspect:

  • front fog lamps fitted to vehicles first used on or after 1 March 2018
  • the 1 rear fog lamp which must be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980

Fog lamps are not needed on:

  • vehicles not fitted with front and rear position lamps
  • vehicles with permanently disconnected, painted over or masked front and rear position lamps
  • tricycles and quadricycles

Front and rear fog lamps are permitted to operate independently of any other lamps or ignition systems.

Fog lamps must produce a steady light which is:

  • white - for front fog lamps
  • red - for rear fog lamps

Front fog lamps that are not wired up and do not have a corresponding switch are not required to work. If you are not sure that they’re connected, you should give the benefit of the doubt.

They cost more than the lights (genuine Subaru ones, haven’t seen any Chinese copies).

Who came up with the idea? The guy who got a bonus for increases the sales of replacement front fog lights.

Flippin' Royal Mail, man. Every time I miss a parcel I do the redirect thing but they throw back on the van and try again regardless, throwing their whole "system" into chaos as the parcel ends up bugger knows where and your redurect request ends up in limbo.

Maybe you ought to stop pretending you're in the "Dukes of Hazzard"?

BMW Owners, you are being conned. My brother wanted to have a ballast fitted to his E87 1 Series. His garage informed him that a ballast in a BMW box would be €536 plus fitting, about €90. They told him to go look on the net, buy one and they'd fit it for the €90.

Price on the net? A genuine OE Valeo part €133, almost exactly a quarter of the dealer price. Hella, €45, which is what's getting fitted.

How can BMW justify a more than 300% mark-up on a part that's almost a consumable?

€90 labour? That’ll be about 15 minutes then.

Because they know they can get away with it.  See also how Audi can get away with charging £300 for a wheel alignment.

It's a non franchised garage, probably about an hour. Which is quite good, as the book time is 1½ hours.

Can't get onto Spotify on my work computer.  I'm guessing Corporate cost cutting policy, to reduce what a billion dollar company spends on data.

Given that I send half my day wearing headphones to block out the voices in my head or in the office, I'm going to have to use YouTube and use the same order more d data

Nhsjobs beta? I'm pretty sure I worked on assuring the first release five years ago, and yet you can still use the old site (and they're still paying for it and all it's many holes)

AA car insurance renewal email, going up £98.

Fuck off then.

They even admit in the email I can get cheaper elsewhere.

Picked up Saab 9-3 from the garage Tuesday with a fresh driveshaft…

Today I lost all drive…

I’m hoping that their repair has failed rather than the clutch! But still won’t be impressed if poor workmanship or poor parts have landed me an RAC callout!

I download a lot from YouTube (Videodownloader from Github) and run them from an old phone.

In the car I have them on a USB stick.

There's a lovely Linux app that works really simply, I keep meaning to get it installed under windows 11 but ive not needed to rip music for a while (coughmetaltrackercough . You pasted the url in after youtubedl and just waited and voila an Mp3!

Given how fairly easily I got chat got to help me write python code to turn something similar I do into an exe clicky button you could make a little window pop up to paste the link in and hit go within 10 minutes* if you did it alot!

I've got a few hundred tracks on the storage of my android head unit in the car. Annoyingly the music app doesn't do folders or albums so their all random songs that can play in isolation. If I want the fill album I'll use YouTube music and stream it

I am a Linux user and Videodownloader is equally simple, just paste the address into it and select video or audio.  Creates a folder and saves the file into it.

If you can't afford, or refuse to pay for consumables for your AMG Mercedes, just walk rather than risking the rest of us with your selfish stupidity.

No surprise there were two child seats in the back.

All four tyres were in a similar state.  Parked taking up three spaces in a busy car park.

Thames Valley Police refused the dangerous driving report (their form states that knowingly driving a vehicle with dangerous defects should be treated as such) as I had "No proof of the vehicle being having been driven in this condition" so would not be taking any action.

Yeah, it just teleported into the Morrison's car park then did it?  Don't know why I bloody bother.  I normally wouldn't have, but the condition here was so egregious, blatant and combined with the way it was parked was just asking for it.  It's not like it's got that bad overnight.  They've known those tyres are fscked for months and just don't care.

Is it an A class or CLA? They tend to be the most used "look at me im AMG" cars around where I live
