Massive grump incoming

i hired a man with a van to help me move a three piece suite

I told him multiple times it was in a top floor flat of a 3 storey building but I will help him bring it down

he arrived, late of course

said no way is he carrying that down, I said I’d told him about the stairs etc and he just said “oh well”

he then said if I gave him £200 he’ll do it, like fuck am I doing that, I don’t even have £200 to my name at the minute

i might have told him to piss off in the end

no idea what to do now, other than maybe just leave it and get another

This is probably an old picture but it just popped up on my faceache feed. I never considered a Capri to be a smoll car but I am just flabbergasted at this….

A similar sort of thing.

I get the difference in height but in breadth and length an SVX was a still is a large 2+2.

Bonkers , I reckon by 2060 the economical roundabout will be akin in size to Thunderbird 2 ...

No pics, but I parked my MK3 escort cabrio next to its focus equivalent a while ago, and got absolutely dwarfed.

Stupid how big cars are these days. No wonder people don't use their garages for cars anymore, they don't fit.

I don't consider my Mazda 6 as particularly large, it is usually dwarfed by the other cars in car parks, but although it would in theory fit in my son's garage, there would be no way to exit it.

First slight grump of the new house

the thermocouple had failed on the boiler and caused the pilot light to keep going out

replaced it myself with a cheap part from toolstation and normal service is resumed

didnt see the point of hassling landlords etc, piece of piss to change

If the heating failed on the first day of a tenancy, I as a landlord would be mortified and return the first weeks rent without being asked.

I mightalso be pissed off that you were trying to fix the heating when I am paying for 24 hour call out, and you don't appear to have any gas safe qualifications.

After those devastating floods in Spain. The political games going on between the Valencian region (run by the right wing PP) and the national government (left wing coalition) FFS get a grip. Families have lost a lot the area needs cleaning power and water needs to be restored.

Thankfully I do not living in this area.

Had a hilarious discussion* with a manager at work today who told us in no uncertain terms that we were not allowed to drink water in the shop. It bothers me that so many people's work lives are governed by such fucking idiots who think because they've achieved the spectacular success of  being promoted to management that they can make up rules as they go along.
I pointed out the relevant bit of government legislation and suggested they fuck off and read it.

Why do so many people become such cunts when they get a little bit of authority?

In hindsight yes I completely agree with that

Most factories I've worked in had a "only covered water" policy for health and safety reasons.  You need water to stay hydrated especially in summer as there's never air conditioning in any factory, but they don't want hot drinks or in fact any drink getting spilled into complex assemblies.

Youth of today...

Lad in the corner shop selling fireworks had no idea what 'little demons' were and looked at me aghast when I told of having a bollocking from my mother for coming home with my fingernails blown off - again!

Aye fair enough but we're talking about the normal wee 500ml bottles of water and the like which the staff bring in themselves, and no equipment beyond PC/mobile phone grade electrics you get in shops.

According to the H&S website an employer must provide clean drinking water which must be 'freely accessible' to all staff at all times.
I suppose they'll argue that the one filtered water dispenser in the canteen  fulfils that role, but how accessible it is depends on your interpretation of the word when it's a good 250m round trip from your workspace.

Never worked anywhere where there was any limitation whatsoever on drinks of any kind anywhere and the firms involved often supplied them free, or at least had them easily available.

I almost always worked with a cup of coffee at hand.

This is going back to the 90s so might have changed now, but I regularly visited a company in Germany. They had vending machines with bottles of beer in them around the factory and crates dotted around for the empties. They’d just go and get a beer as we’d go for a coffee even mid morning. ( I was tempted to enquire about vacancies).

Used to visit sister plants in Italy, Germany and France.  The canteens sold wine and beer.  Very relaxed.

Lords Cricket Ground in the early 1980s - they'd have 20 or 30 plod in for traffic control/ ground security and, between the start and end of the days' events there was not a lot to do but watch cricket. Police room was above a bar on the south east corner of the ground. Had it's own (free) beer tap. Civilised.
We had to be a bit reserved though as getting back to base involved a No 16 bus down Baker Street.

Over the last three days I have driven on the M42, M6, M1, M25, M20, M26 and M2.

ALL of them, for most of their length, were covered with 50mph average speed cameras. It actually felt unfamiliar when I went onto A-road dual carriageways and was able to do 70.

Shall we just give up and make the nationwide speed limit 50? Or is that the eventual plan?

That would appear to be the plan.   My route to work involves has lots of 50 mph average speed on a dual carriage wayvthat used to be 70. If I go on the parallel road, a country road not quite of B road quality, I can do 60.  Despite the bends and the odd 30 zone, it's almost as fast.

The obsession with speed per se is bad is what’s wrong. There’s so much bad driving around that goes unpunished because everything is geared to catching speeders.

I drive from Scotland to London a few times a year. Each time , I have to take emergency (life saving) action about half a dozen times on average and probably another 20 that would have caused damage and finished our journey, just because they are so many tossers on the road who either can’t drive or don’t give a fuck about anyone else. But go try doing 80 on a clear road and they have you.

You can add the M3 and M27 to that list down here too. They made it 50mph average speed cameras when they were converting them to smart* motorways. I think that took the best part of two years.

Now they've decided to add more emergency layby's (or more like they've been told to because they didn't put enough in in the first place) and they've made the whole of the smart sections on both motorways in to one giant roadworks. You would think they could do one layby at a time and just put a 50mph section in around that, then move on to the next one. But no, they've cordoned off one lane along the whole length of each motorway.

It's almost as if they're doing it on purpose to spite us all because somebody told them they'd fucked up and they are sulking.

You can guarantee there's an element of cost cutting and or laziness in there as well.

If they submit the paperwork for the scheme of works as one giant reduced speed/capacity/whatever of the road in question, that will be covered under a single temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO), single fee etc.

If they were to compartmentalise it, each work area would end up needing it's own TTRO, have it's own fees paid etc.

The back office side of things that handles that sort of thing is really outdated and just doesn't lend itself to handling large scale works in anything like a sensible way.

It's enough of a cack handed mess when you're just trying to take out a couple of parking bays for 24 hours to get the mangled remains of a bus shelter that was flattened by a bin wagon properly removed...

Another grump or more of a confusion: why does every video published anywhere online suddenly seem to HAVE to have "POV" at the start of its title?
