The grumpy thread

I rarely get bitten by midges which is fortunate as I live in Scotland.  However I was out in my garden at the weekend enjoying the sun and ended up being bitten by something 9 times (I counted).

Anyway come yesterday, one on top of my left foot is becoming very inflamed. My wife advised me to go to the pharmacy and it was lucky I did because I apparenlty have sepsis . Come the end of yesterday, my foot has swollen up and it feels like what I can only describe as someone rubbing hot chilli powder and itching powder into my foot and then pricking it with a thousand needles. Agony.

It's worse this morning so hopefully the antibiotics start to clear it soon.

A spider?

Nowhere near as dramatic or worrying but three years ago I was bitten while gardening, no idea what it was that did the biting but noticed a swollen red spot on my calf, didn't attach any significance to it, but then there was a rash around it, itchy and stingy, that spread and moved to the other calf, then continued upwards until it eventually reached my ears.  Tried all sorts of home remedies but eye of frog and tail of newt are largely ineffective.  I did shower several times a day and used either Pears soap, Wrights Coal Tar soap and Octenisan,

I slowly reduced but is still there slightly.  The thing that controls it is Carbolic soap from the apothecary at Beamish Museum.

Should go/have gone to see a doctor but it seemed to trivial to bother anyone about.

Antihistamines and get it looked at maybe? Seems a long time to still be having problems, so worth getting checked I’d say.

I have some antihistamines prescribed by a pharmacist but haven't opened them yet as I can't afford to be tired.

I did try some others but they had no effect whatsoever, as with most medication.

Haven't seen a doctor in eleven years.

I have been a doctor dodger for many years too but have to take antihistamines often now for prickly heat and have never found them to cause drowsiness but I’ve only taken ones containing Cetirizine Hydrochloride. Cheap supermarket brands though, not fucking Piriteze at several times the price for the same thing!

Don't wish to sound dramatic, but my father was like you until he finally plucked up courage to go over large weight loss problems passing  solids.

Would have been an easy fix, at worst a colostomy bag.

Hed got cancer of the colon , was to far advanced gone in 3 months , didn't really show until undressed he was 3 stone underweight & looked like someone from a concentration camp.

He was 62. Never smoked, etc.

I've had both cetirizine and loratadine and neither of them make me drowsy, but it probably depends on the individual's body. Lidl do both for about a quid a week so don't pay silly money for brand names.

Dad is still in the hospital. It is terrifying that suddenly he became really unwell and his right leg swollen to twice its size. They still don't know what caused this. But hopefully he won't need more surgery on his knee.

He has been transferred to the nearest hospital and I visited him today. And it's hell, the hospital is understaffed, so those who work there are overworked and stressed, so no wonder we have so many mistakes that happen in hospitals. And the building is old and run down and dirty and reminiscent of something from the 3rd world. I could probably take 100 photos like the one below when I was there today. So my experience with Norwegian hospitals is still the same as always.IMG_20240517_090437_446.jpg.9ee914fa4065e14124e22bc25808ead2.jpg

I am now in hospital too. A sturdy 4 grams of antibiotics was 'not winning' against the infection in my foot according to the doctor. It's doing mad things, blistering, swelling, varying and changing areas of redness.

So I was sent up ASAP. I thought I would not have to see the inside of a hospital so soon again after my dad passed a couple of months ago.

Whoa, sorry to hear that escalated so fast - at least you're somewhere where you can be monitored and treated?

Sepsis is horrible, but hopefully you'll get sorted fast and on the mend very soon.

Sending good wishes your way, dude.

Take care, all!

I tried Ceterizine for a bit, again prescribed by a pharmacist and about £4.  Did nothing whatsoever.  Then saw it and Loratidine in Lidl for 87p, same make.

The one I haven't used is Chlorphenamine Maleate and I got a discount on the price in the pharmacy, £1.60.

Shit, I was hoping you were on the mend. Whereabouts are you? Nowhere near the RAH in Paisley I hope?

I am surprised to read that. The propaganda ( I expect there is a better word for this) that comes out of the UK press says that Norway never squandered the money made fro oil revenues. It invested it in schools, infrastructure and hospitals.

I hope your dad recovers soon... How is your tooth/teeth?

Me too, I always though Sweden and Norway were more advanced than us in public works etc.

Norway does not spend money on anything and it makes no difference which party is in power. The police, health, care for the elderly, the road network, etc. all have problems. The local fire department where I live was in the media a few years ago when one of the few fire trucks they had was a converted milk truck that was 30 years old and had done over 1 million km and was worn out and unreliable this sort of thing is common.

The only police officer in an area up north was left without a police car and had to use a bicycle or his private car after the 15 year old police car with over 400,000km had an engine failure and there was no money to fix it. It sounds like a joke, but it's true. Link below to an article in Norwegian about this.

https://www.nrk.no/nordland/politibilen-pa-nesna-ga-tapt-etter-405.000-km---siden-har-lensmannen-brukt-beina-1.12936438

And sorry it was a bit much, we are annoyed with the state of things. And thank you and my teeth are a little better now but have to do something about it and it's not easy to find a good dentist so it will be a challenge.

Yeah, so literally the only vegetarian dish that isn't make it yourself salad and chip sandwiches tonight is mushroom pizza and after one bite I notice its got fucking tuna on it. 30 years I've been a vegetarian and apparently I should have asked. Far as I'm concerned it should say mushroom and fucking fish.

I was in Larbert hospital.

A senior nurse studied it and proclaimed "Hmm", which didn't exactly instill confidence 😂 Then a microbiologist put her head round the door and she and her colleagues had been studying it with interest too.

Basically though I need to let the antibiotics work and give them a longer chance, so I'm back home again.

They weren't taking the piss with it though. Some folk in the waiting room were moaning because they'd been waiting all day but I was in at 10 to 4, assessed in about 1/2 hour, seen by the senior nurse in another 1/2 hour and home by 7pm.

My Grump - spent the afternoon drilling out through a double skinned breezeblock wall. New waste pipe from sink to new outside gulley/trap.
Happy days.
Then found the dishwasher waste pipe has split right where it fits into the sink waste - poxy dishwasher is a built in job and takes ages to unscrew and pull out to access the waste connections at the back.
Fuckit - RTV sealant, cable ties and some trunking. Test that  tomorrow and if it works, sorted. If not, dog bowl will be repurposed.

Good. Glad to hear you were expedited and back home. Hope the drugs get on top of it quickly from now, good luck!

Hospital visit with number 3 son today to hopefully get him signed off as ok for the rest of this year and maybe go on holiday at some point, the specialist has upped his meds, we now have our own INR machine to take home, and he’s booked him in for blood tests next week,  another check up end of the month and a Heart Catheter is on the cards for early next month. Only plus side his SATS are now up to 85-90.   A bit of a bum day really

Clipping a television aerial cable to the skirting board today

all went really well!

decided to put one last clip in to make it just look a bit tidier

no sooner had i clipped it in

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP etc

wonder why the intruder alarm is having a tantrum

entered the code - “status unset 03 events”

1016 tamper

1015 PA

Aux fuse fail

That’s right

I’d managed to hit not one but 2 alarm cables with a single small nail

so spent the best part of an hour soldering them back together

but wait it gets better

I managed to then pop the bell and the battery fuse whilst soldering

cue the bell box going off and unable to stop it with a dead keypad

managed to raid all the drawers for glass fuses and got normal operation again, it even still works as it’s been set for a few hours this evening

what a fuck on

i hate DIY

Ours still loves to throw a massive hissy fit if the phone line ever goes down.  Which happens at least a couple of times a year for a couple of minutes.  Usually at about three in the morning.  Generally met with huge amounts of swearing.
