Last year, during the "Beast from the East", I suffered 2 days of my boiler not firing up due to the pilot flame refusing to stay lit. We were freezing. Since that time, the boiler has been no trouble.

Thursday and Friday were very cold days here in Devon, and once again, we suffered with no central heating. The same problem again, the boiler pilot flame refused to stay lit so no central heating. I am pretty sure, as the boiler works fine the rest of the year, that the problem must be down to low gas pressure in the main gas supply line to the house.

This morning when I got up, first thing I did was to start the boiler pilot flame and it lit up no problem. The boiler has run the whole day and the house is now toasty warm again.

I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem. I am pretty sure the boiler has no faults and I am reluctant to call in a gas engineer. The last one told me my boiler was old fashioned and should be replaced, even though no fault was found with its operation.  Gas engineers IMHO resemble Solicitors. They find reasons to charge you for **** all! (With appologies to any Gas Engineers on the forum)

Hey! I resemble that remark!

Having my sister phone up to say goodbye, she is going to end it - as she's got no reason to live and is slowly killing herself through drink anyway. She's an absolute mess, has had 5 kids taken off her, drinks herself to oblivion, hangs around with all the wrong people and has ruined her life and self.

If it were anyone else, I'd just say oh well, serves them right or something, but can't ignore it as she is my sister. I can't exactly do anything as I live at the opposite end of the country. All I could do was speak to the local constabulary and ask if they could do a welfare assessment, to see if she really is a danger to herself / others.

I wish she would pull herself out of the mess she is in, but she doesn't seem to want to. Our parents refuse to help her because they are Jehovah's Witnesses and we aren't. I believe our upbringing* is a major factor as well.

Not wanting advice, just had to rant somewhere.

*Read as borderline child abuse.

Fucking hell man. Get your arse up there to see her pronto.

Check chimney top, maybe "hat" fell off and wind blows out the pilot flame

Went out to look at a one owner Rover Mini Cooper yesterday. The pictures looked decent enough but registration was hidden so couldn't do the MOT history check beforehand (note to self, don't bother going to see a car again if the seller won't tell you the registration).

Anyway, it was rusty, very rusty in all the usual Mini places. Once I had the registration I could see a list of advisories as long as the car itself and a history that suggested lots of skimping (failed on bald tyres twice, number plate bulbs, indicator bulbs, etc... all the things you'd check regularly surely).

Thankfully it was only seven miles away but I'm definitively out.

A SPi or MPi Mini still has a lot of appeal though.

There is an immense amount of banging coming from the vicinity of my stepdaughter's bedroom. SD is pretending to be soundo, but I didn't know she owns a pair of size 12 rigger boots which I tripped over. Wife is soundo. The pair of dickheads (cats) are soundo on the cat tree, heating is off. Where is this banging coming from? it's keeping me awake and I have to be up at 5am as on gritter call

It wouldn't make any difference.

She's had help, time after time. Every time she gets help she self destructs again.

I have my own responsibilities, my own children, and I won't jeopardise that for someone who doesn't want help. I know that sounds harsh, but that's the situation.

Had a conversation about finances.

Apparently the savings we have are not enough to invest in the way I want to. Because apparently we need a buffer bigger than a years wages for most people. Just in case.

I also should budget 10k of that for a better car.

Shit does that mean I can buy a V8 Monaro now?

Also had a conversation about my eating and weight.

I haven't tried to loose weight the last 3 weeks, but I will try.

I haven't mentioned that at 14 stone 10 lbs I'm at a lower weight than I have been since December 2016.

So in 5 weeks since boxing day I have lost 1/4 of my target.

I have secretly rewarded myself with a piece of chocolate and a packet of crisps.

Idiot.

As long as it doesn't become habitual, the odd treat is fine if you're on a diet or trying to lose a few kilos - crisps, chocolate, sweets, cheese etc. Sometimes you need something like that to break up what can be monotony in food. It can give you a bit of an uplift if you're feeling crappy as well.

You can cook great tasting healthier alternatives to normally unhealthy meals - Indian & Chinese fakeaways, I've even found some doner kebab spices at Tesco you mix in with mince to make a healthy Turkish delicacy which I'm giving a go this week.

Phoebe is still ill, so I am  still carrying her around. It is now debatable which of us is going to end up worse... I'm winning at the moment, just not a competition I want to win, or indeed, even play! Wish she'd get better, I hate to see her in pain and when she squeeks, a little bit of me dies inside.

Who is Phoebe?

I take blood pressure tablets. And mine are within this bit of news.

A Dutch TV programme has found out that a lot of meds are made in China and India. Meds are labelled as being made within the EU.Some are manufactured to be cheaper than those made in the EU and thus found out to contain cancer inducing ingredients. Here is the page from the EMA (European Medicines Agency) It is one of the Agencies that the UK has lost due to changes. Good they do not seem to be doing a great job anyways.

Was pleased when a subway was due to open in town. Quite like one now and again.

Mrs went there the first week it opened...

Full on food poisoning. 2 days - both ways.

Might be coincidence but I think I'll pass if you don't mind....

Doesn't sound harsh at all

I'm going through something similar with My Brother, He's 51 married with 2 kids at Secondary School and is a gambling addict.

He 'borrows' money from anyone who believes his very convincing lies; emotionally blackmails our 85 year old Dad into bailing him out with money Dad just hasn't got, makes family life hell to the point that Social Services are involved and excluded him from the family home for 8 days He'd been back 3 days following a promise to change his ways when he Stole the kids Christmas money that was hidden and gambled it away before threatening suicide yet again by text.

I can not bear to be in the same room as him with his whining self pity everybody blames me attitude He's destroying My Niece and Nephew's lives but just doesn't see it.

Over a period of roughly 15 years we estimate that he had lost just under £250.000

You sound perfectly reasonable to me, from a conversation with AA (I rang because I didn't know who to turn to next) unless some people hit rock bottom then they will never have a reason to change all the love, help and understanding will just enable them to carry on with their addiction, the person in question has been through private rehab twice paid for by the family and has driven one family member into 40k of debt so they can keep 'trying to change'.

Get the kids out of there and just cut them off

This is exactly what happened with my ex. Sometimes they are just beyond help. She's been on every course under the sun and nothing has made a difference. She lost her good job, house, license, me and the kids.
Posted

She couldn't even stay sober boxing day when I allowed the kids to go. She hadn't seen them for 2 months. My mother had to go and remove them when my ex's friend rang her at 3 o'clock saying she was totally 'blasted'. She never rings the eldest (ones 13 the other 6) and the cheeky cunt is taking me to court tomorrow because I won't let them go to see her. Over a telephone interview with cafcass the lady said the court would more than likely stop them going altogether. Alcohol is deadly in the wrong hands and it's very very easy to jump on the slippery slope.

Will I sell my car for half the advertised price to some half baked botty rocket, even though it says 'no offers'?

Will I take £100 less and deliver it to Manchester free of charge to someone who types like he's put his fingers in a fucking industrial meat blender?

Where's the fella who's getting to mine at 2.00pm yesterday?

Oh, his mate's truck started smoking and he got pulled over for it being full of cherry.

Just had a chat with BT.

They want to increase the cost of BTSport by about 60% so I asked how to cancel it, by Chat.

After going through all the security etc I was cut off as it took over 2 minutes for me to answer his last question, even though he took over 6 minutes to answer when my broadband contract expired.

So I try Chat again and explain the situation. I was told that I had to go through the whole rigmarole again, fair enough in one way from a security point of view, and when I told him they they had just been given the info he cut the connection with a note to ring a UK number.

I guess that one of things they are judged by is how many calls they deal with so any excuse to cut a call helps keeps their numbers up and there's no feedback about the level of service, unlike Amazon, Amex etc..

Posted

It’s amazing the number of times I’ve been cut off when trying to cancel something, not just BT

I’m sure they think if they cut you off enough times and make it sufficiently difficult you'll think, ah fuck it I’ll stay.
