I did shove the car belonging to one of the college bullies out of the way with the Niva once when they boxed me in one afternoon.

Sadly the van isn't suited to hospital shuttle duties as the car park has a 2.1 metre height barrier in place.

Ah, that'll be another dead condenser then.

Electronic ignition it is. Not because I want to, just because I can't reliably get a decent condenser any more.

What value are they? I might well have something suitable in my various boxes of electronic bits and pieces...

Zel:  no idea, you're asking the wrong person.  How would I find out?

‘Christine & The Queens’ putting a bit of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights into a song.

Nice work, totally wrecked a great tune which now sounds like two sheep and a fucking goat stuck in a mine shaft.

Most of Kate's earlier offerings such as this and Wow! should have some sort of preservation order to prevent wankstains like that messing with them.

"Listen up you fucking idiot. Kate Bush wrote 'the man with the child in his eyes' when she was twelve. Now fuck off".

The kind I need is this one: https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/condenser-gsc2109.html I think.  Lucas 45D distributor on the Princess.  Trouble is, that doesn't look any different to the other condensers I've fitted and they seem to have a lifespan of 6-12 months or about 3,000 miles, whichever comes first, when the car is used regularly which is quite frankly crap.  I should've known really, the intermittent starting issues are the same as every other time I've had condenser failure, it just coincided with damp weather this time around and I'd put it down to that since the Princess isn't the happiest about starting when it's damp out and she hasn't a nice dry garage to live in.

It's probably time to make the switch to electronic ignition.  If I buy a kit and it's just as bad then I can have a nice old I Told You So at the folks that told me to go that route and I'll go back to the old condensers and consider them a twice-annual service item.  Funnily enough, I've never had an issue with modern rotor arms or points, just condensers.

Yes that condenser on those points is crap. Buy the condenser I suggested (or direct from Distributor Doctor) and cut off the one on those points. Then de-solder the yellow lead off the nice condenser and solder the cut off wire from the points onto the nice condenser.

Just had to chuck away a bottle of 1991 Vouvray- there was a small puddle in front of the wine rack and it turned out the cork was inside the bottle and only the foil cap was keeping the now stale contents in. I’ve only got one left now! Bought a case of six at ten years old from the producer Mr Daniel Jarry himself for 7euro a bottle ( currently selling for 80 a bottle if you can find it).

You can buy a small electronics kit from Velleman? that just uses the points as a signal to trigger the spark, one of those might be the solution to your condensor troubles

Oh the scenes at aldi this morning, people shoving and pushing for Kevin the Carrot toys, I had to stand on 4 pensioners to get my set  :-D

Talked to Mike about best solution for budget and we went with the Moss suggestions from SiC.  In theory, it should resolve things and I get to put Moss' brag that they've never had a condenser fail, to the test.  Not sure where they get off charging £5 postage for standard first class on an item that'll go on a standard first class stamp.  Seems to be the norm for companies like that, like Rimmers sticking VAT on the postage cost which they absolutely shouldn't do.

If you wanted one, you should have told me and I'd popped down to my local branch! Wouldn't have cost more than a quid or so to post.

Our hearts go out to ye at this difficult time.

Must remember to check the state of those three 1985 Alfred Gratien Brut that I've had hanging around since at least 1991...... Probably gone flat a long time ago.

Next time do a Kathy Bates, as seen in Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

If you're going to do a Kathy Bates make it as seen in Misery. Next time they go to the hospital they'll be able to use the disabled spaces.

Condensers look to usually be in the .2-.3 mF range according to the random selection of Haynes manuals and just grabbed to look at.

Sadly having had a look in my main component shelves I've none with a decent voltage rating in that sort of capacity. Possibly do have some stored away in the back of the loft, but goodness only knows when those will see the light of day again. Guess the ones you've found there are the best bet for a quick fix.

I really need to find a good source as I'll no doubt need a new one for the Invacar at some point.

If you can get them then Elna caps seem to have a good reputation - I've seen 20 year old Elna electrolytics measured at better than their original rating.

Have had to use the Lada today while I wait to get the Xantia sorted tomorrow.

Within 30 seconds of leaving the house got absolutely blasted by a gritter.

So much for keeping it away from the bloody salt.

...which we saw no sodding sign of last winter when we had actual snow, mind you...but they'll happily drown the place in it if it's forecast to get a bit chilly it seems.

Will be giving it a thorough wash soon then.

Or possibly even Norman Bates....

Agreed. But if anyone mentions that to the VAT man he will look at Rimmers sales for the last 30 years, pluck a massive figure out of thin air, and send that to them in the form of an immediately payable invoice.

Far better to mention to Rimmers that charging VAT on postage is wrong and it would be a shame if anyone mentioned that to the authorities. But in the meantime a couple of free condensers would make it all “go away”....

Yes it is blackmail but I bet your local Crown Court has never seen a blackmail demand of two condensers for an 81 Princess before. And a heck of a story for the “D” Wing showers

I'd have drunk it by 2002, but then I don't have a cellar.

Contact your HR dept and ask for a DSE assessment ( http://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/dse/assessment.htm )

They'll get you to fill in something like this ( http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ck1.pdf )

On page 8 of 10 fill in the bit ( Is the lighting suitable, eg not too bright or too dim to work comfortably? ) with your lack of photon issues and return the form.

That’s a very good idea! Ta!

Points and condensers are shit.

Dispose of them now. There is an excellent reason why electronic ignition was invented.

In absolutely public places, sure. In an office environment? If you can train a dog to do it, you should be able to find people who know how to switch a light on and off, if not, train them or put a sign. If they leave the lights on, have words. If they still do, have more words.

Mind you, our kids like to leave the lights on, no matter how many times I ask them to switch them off. My answer? Fit lights that are really cheap to run. The LED lamps they have now are 4.3 Watts. Compared to the TV set that they absolutely must have on its minimal though, and running the air conditioner dwarfs that usage, too...

But, in an office the only automatic light needs to be on the outside of the building.

I was surprised though the other day, at a restaurant we visited there were some automatic lights in the toilets, and several sensors had been put up above the stalls so you could go in to take a crap without the damn lights going off.

Phil

Couldn’t agree more. It’s infuriating - when you don’t want them on during the day (the outer wall is floor to ceiling glass) they’re on and then at night they go off! Infuriating! I really don’t know what was wrong with light switches.

That restaurant sounds good to me, there’s been a number of occasions I’ve been left in the dark in a public toilet

Time for a novelty desk ornament or an oscillating fan(with the blades removed)?

Novelty desk ornament is a good idea, really like the fan idea! Ta

Yeah because people are too stupid to setup points properly.

My ex-girlfriend's (back when I was 19), Mum's boyfriend was Reggie Kray's solicitor and coffin bearer at his funeral.  Funnily enough.
