The grumpy thread

I had the luxury* of sitting on the wheel arch or trying to balance on a loose stool (the seat type, stop sniggering) in the back of various vans growing up although apparently we did have a car seat when we were babies.

I found the car seats get easier once they are into the high back booster things - they seem to fit pretty much anything.

Which reminds me of a drummer friend from years ago, touring with Davey Graham.

After a gig they stopped at a motorway service station for coffee & bacon butties.

About an hour after resuming their journey they realised that Davie was missing.

Pulled over with the intention of turning round to go back for him, they heard a guitar from outside.

And there was Davey, sitting on the roofrack playing his guitar in the freezing rain.

Giffer (for such that I have become....) memories of childhood unrestrained....

Aged 3, sat Lone-Ranger stylee akimbo the rear seat armrest of Grandad's Wolseley 15/60.   Only allowed to do this if I promised not to scrape my sandal buckles against the leather upholstery.

My sister (aged 3 and a half) riding in same Grandad's Beetle, stood behind the rear seat in the carpeted luggage area.   I was envious as it looked infinitely more roomy than my middle back seat perch and a good deal warmer.

Later, probably 3 or 4 years or so, riding to town in the back of mate's dad's Bedford CA.  No seats so we played "how long can you stand up without holding on" while Mr. Mate hooned it round wet roundabouts on Town & Country's.

We never got hurt....Well, hardly ever.   I still have a scar on my forehead from rapidly ejecting from my mother's grip in Grandad's (him again) MkVIII Minx (this I don' t recall but am told it bent the ignition key into the dash).    And I fell out of the Wolseley twice - once into a ditch full of stinging nettles.

The only time grand-Rockers get to rid in old Morrises is at shows.   The eldest is already showing signs of classic vehicular interest.

There you go, not a grump at all really, other than that I feel fecking old now.

Huawei were selling phones for a quid every hour on the hour today. Every hour, on the hour I waited for the counter to go down to zero, but it got to 8 seconds then the whole page crashed and I got a timeout error. By the time it reloaded it was all over

I gave up after 5 attempts and Unsubscribed from their mailing list and wrote why in the comments box, that will learn them!

Because you need to pay people, so the tickets would have been even more expensive.

Plus, people are often arseholes. Computers are never arseholes. I much prefer dealing with computers.

This fucking laptop, again! so slow it's going to get chucked through te window. I hate it and windows 10/microsoft/every fucker who has ever worked for them.

Also, health, or lack of it. Teeth now making a bid for freedom, pain in back and legs like you wouldn't believe, left eye not functioning (hardly anyway) sore throat. cough, lethargy just like I have a cold, but I ain't got a cold/flu but the symptoms for about a week.

Also spent far to much money today on (necessary) utter shit and feel skint... because I am.

There, proper fucking moody grump for you all.

I am sure it has been said previously but have you considered a Linux distribution.

There are many of them catering to all sorts of different desires, All available as free downloads or purchased DVDs or USB sticks fairly cheaply.

I favour Linux Mint and Ubuntu - use both daily and interchangeably.  Have done for years, alongside Windows but Windows became less and less and has now gone altogether, not used it for about five years now and dislike Win10 intensely (kids have it).

It does rather depend on what uses you have for your laptop but if it is general surfing, emails, forums and office type buggering about there are no problems.

I use it for forums, this of course being one of them, email quite a bit, a bit of spreadsheety stuff, watch a few films and series on iPlayer, spend far too much time on YouTube and recently on electronics buggering about - and eBay/Amazon.  Play a few CDs and DVDs on it.

There are differences that need to be learned but they are fairly simple adjustments, not PhD type learning.

There is a great deal of help if you get stuck and like here the helpers are pretty unbiased and generous with their time and information.

You can download Linux Mint hereand Ubuntu here

You can then burn a DVD or USB stick - I have never done this from Windows but it is possible.

You can then run it without installing it to get the feel of it, then install as you want - install usually takes about twenty minutes and is deadly simple, either in place of or alongside Windows. (Dual-Boot).

If this all seems too much, PM me and I can send a USB dongle for you to try out and then install from if you like it.

I should be fitting the new wheel to my C5 but it looks like it might rain within the next 24 hours so bugger that.

Fucking p38, yesterday I fixed the air suspension, today I fitted a new lambda sensor, the srs light had magically fixed itself as had the abs light

Driving home today I was feeling upbeat and that I'd treat it to a new tyre and a service and then psshhh went the air suspension.

It didn't drop and I've got no warning lights but I'm prepared for it to have shat itself again

Lay ins, bare with me...

Everytime I have a lay in because I'm knackered my back falls apart. I can't see the connection between not being tired & spondylosis myself but it seems to be there. Then I have to spend the day on Tramadol which leave me fuzzy headed & slightly dizzy so I can' get much done, oh & still in pain as they take about six hours to nearly cure that.

I was meant to be roofing the new log store today, all I've managed to do is sort out the stuff to do it ready for tomorrow.

100% agree on that. I used to suffer tremendously when having a lie in, to the extent I would be up and dressed at the same time weekends and weekdays. A memory foam topped mattress changed that. Also, plenty of walking.

Ruddy airbag light has been on all day. It's been on before but went off on a restart, today it's been flashing all day, then on the way home it was solid on.

What have previous owners hit to turn it off? I presume it's an mot issue? Or will black tape sort that out? I know the clock spring is fucked, but don't really want to have all that off at the moment!

Beko: it'll definitely be the wires under the driver's seat, just like Bub says.  You may even find they've been repaired once at least in a vain attempt to cure it.

I'm the same, even with a posh memory foam mattress topper on top on a newish very expensive mattress (and you are correct I wasn't involved in the purchase!), the worst thing for my back is being immobile even a lay in of a few hours will leave my back stiffer and aching more than normal.

On the plus side after a few weeks taking 8 Tramadol a day you loose the unpleasant side effects and go back to feeling more or less normal but with a reduced level of pain. Can you not just stay on a low dose of tramadol every day? Maybe 1 at night if your back pain wakes you up?

Changing it on someone else's is worse, especially when the only access involves laying with your head on the floor under the back of the toilet pan....

Ace, thanks! I dropped my rolly under there the other day thinking about it and fished about to get it. The connector is as it should be though, so no repair yet..

How well would it take being soldered together? Would just chop the plugs off and direct wire with heatshrink. I've got used to the seats now so am in no rush to change them...

PayPal are being right bastards. Sold the Mercedes on eBay, the bidder is a chap from Poland, and although I stated cash on collection, I agreed to him sending money either via bank transfer or PayPal, he sent money via PayPal who are now deciding to sit on the money for 21 days stating reasons of "protecting the buyer" which is bullshit, they are sitting on it to make interest.

PayPal can FUCK OFF.

Buyer for the Rover only contacted me last night via eBay messages so I sent a message asking him to phone me, he has not done so. So, no money from car sales this weekend as expected then. Nice.

Also, had a 'disagreement' with the owner of the company who supplies me work. Yeah pal, things go wrong because you can't be arsed to teach people properly. Speak to me like a prat and you'll get as good as you give chap.

I don't normally need the Tramadol, I 've been months without it before. But when my back decides to go I'm buggered & can't walk etc.

We've got a decent mattress, it's more if my back gets cold when I'm asleep that it plays up. Hence getting worse at this time of year.

Cheers for the ideas though.

Back exercises are what you want

Try the 'pretzel' position or lay on your back and pull your knees up to your chest

Posted

Yup, do all them. Been to physio/drs etc.

What I need is to get this damn cottage finished so I can setup my home gym again. Back when I spent about 10 hours a week in the gym I never got any back problems at all.

The amazing thing is, they have wrapped a plastic car in fake rust and thats not actually the worst thing about it. Who'd they got those wheels off, Del Boy?

Posted

The worst thing about that is the car, still nothing a match & flammable liquid can't cure.

That gets done quite often as the connectors get a bit loose and corroded.

Not the biggest job if you ever did need the seat out again.

I Know! Ten minute job and can't be arsed to go and do it.

Broke a wheel so had to buy a new one.  Which took me weeks.  Had the tyre fitted a couple of weeks ago and the wheel has patiently waited since.

The spare is fine but got a puncture, which was repaired quickly - this was before the new wheel arrived.  Years since I have had a puncture, sod's law etc.

I am quickly running out of excuses not to do it. :(
