The grumpy thread

Time to make the main forum unvisible to the human eye to try and stop trolling? Or would we lose potential newcomers?

Posted

Tough call, not sure I have any kind of answer to the problem. If people are determined enough to troll then what can we do.

when hirst made content it was great but a lot of the time when he posted it was to moan about the board and the content on it, which got a bit wearing tbh.

I think he would have preferred it to be a closed board .

Yup.  It's one of the reasons I believe the Hillman Avenger and Talbot Sunbeam are doomed as cars, because the ASOC have a closed board - you have to joing the club to see it, including the for sale threads.  This limits the audience for cars that appear for sale to those already in the club, and most of them have at least one Avenger or Sunbeam and don't have space for another - I was asked to look at one and advertise it through the club, but no-one had no space for another car.

This is a shame, because the Avenger is a rather fine car.

Can't stand closed forums. Sometimes when I'm browsing for info, perhaps even because I want to buy a car or maybe just because I'm interested, I come across a massive banner that says "You need to subscribe to see this". Now I know it's free, but I already get billions of emails from every forum ever joined so this is just a barrier which says "We don't like your sort round here". Why on earth should it be subscribe to view? What do they get apart from my email address? Oh I see, they get my email address which is then sold on.

It's for that reason that I use 10minutemail for any forums where I subscribe to browse, and hopefully their reply bounces will make them think twice.

Right, today's grump. Collecting #1 child from her job (I number them by date of appearance, not through favouritism BTW) in a little village, parked up ten minutes early and it seems there's a cycle race going though. I know this because as I pulled into the high street and then left into a car park (indicating both times, correct road position etc) there's a lycra clad moron screams up behind me from another turning (I had right of way) and starts yelling to get out of his way. This is a tiny little market village, you don't want to be doing more than about 10mph, yet he's clearly on a fucking time trial and popping veins all over his head.

I'm then parked up, and it seems the Police have been called for seems to be a bike vs car (I turned the radio off and dropped the window, I'm nosey like that). Guy getting breathalysed, shopkeepers coming out to weigh in their tuppence. All I keep hearing is how the cyclist was on the time trial and went straight through a junction without looking, and poor old car driver gets his morning ruined. Worth pointing out the cyclist is up on his feet and fiddling with his bike, he's not been injured or owt.

Meanwhile, I'm sat watching endless cyclists completely ignore the rules of the road, near misses with pedestrians, not stopping at junctions, zipping up the inside of cars at junctions, no fucking hand signals and I'm feeling really sorry for the driver that got one sprawled across his bonnet.

I'm right in thinking if I organised a motorbike race through some local villages, I'd be branded a monster - right?

Starting to look for a caravan for next summer. I think that as it's the end of season they should start coming down in price. Looking on evil bay and bum tree. Someone recommended preloved. My grump is why is preloved so fxxking awkard/dificult to used. The filters that I want are not there. Is it just me or am I being stupid? Does any one have any tips on where else to look for a cheapish large caravan?

That sounds like a shockingly organised TT to be honest, it should never have those sorts of junctions, competitors are governed by the rules of the road and should adhere to them, and there should be adequate numbers of marshals.  It's been over a decade since I last marshalled or competed in a time trial, but the cyclists are at fault here, I think.

Its not unusual for bike clubs to have race meets around here throughout the summer and a few days beforehand the organisers will recce the route and usually paint direction arrows on the road at junctions so the cyclists know where they are going. This is normally done with a flourescent aerosol. Fair enough, I suppose, they generally stick to the rules of the road and have marshalls managing traffic at junctions if required etc.

But then a few weeks back on the morning of a race some guy was using a brush and a big tin of white dulux to alter the road markings at the junction at the end of my village to give priority to the cyclists over the normal main roads right of way.

One of my neighbours tore the guy a new one, who apparently really didnt see anything wrong with what he was doing.

And closed forums can FRO. Nothing worse than finding the answer to some technical question on google and it leads to a forum...."you must be a registered member to view this blah blah blah".  I need yet another set of login details like a goldfish needs a pair of wellies.

The worst is when I have something to selI. I dont want to have to register and really, really dont want to have to chat 50 posts of shit to gain access to the for sale forum - I just want to sell my thing and the best way to do this is to advertise it to the people most likely to buy it.

But so do all the dodgy con artists, another forum I use has had frequent visits from the conmen who advertise stuff just a bit too cheap then do a runner with a few hundred quid. Whereas the forum that requires at least 150 posts before selling never has this happen, it's there to protect the members and I am happy with that.

use a disposable email for info that needs an email addy to register

There was always a delete button, but it only worked until someone else added another post.

Definitely. I've used it often having thought the better of some fiendishly clever and witty/sarcastic response.

Use firefox, install user agent switcher http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher/ and make yourself appear to be the google search robot.

That opens many forums and other sites because they want their content to appear in google to lure people in...

Hermes have done their usual *excellent* service with a headlight I found for the Escort.......

... to me looks more like the sender to blame for not packing it well.

Had that with a GS headlamp. If you're going to try and save money with Hermes/Yodel, piss away that saving with treble packaging materials.

Preloved is a pain, but Gumtree have seemingly removed the ability to filter out a price range. This means endless sifting through adverts for nearly new cars to try and find the £120 Xantias and whatnot.

Ah. I see your point now, once you get to £99, Gumtree is swamped with new car finance.

Can someone who has alternative means of contacting Hirst send him my best and that I hope to see him somewhere again in the future.  Ta!

Seth, I have his address if you want to send him a postcard or something.

This is why I said not to feed the troll - if they're reading these posts they're likely to be getting their ego boosted by thinking, "I did that", probably fueling any sociopathic tendencies further.
