The grumpy thread

I have a staffy. Softest dog I have owned. Runs and hides from cats. All staffies I know are soft but also protective of their master or mistress. I don't condone what happened but I also don't believe the dog should lose its life for one incident. Now if it was a vicious dog as all dogs can be regardless of breed and it has previous form then may be an option. Questions need asking though like how did it escape.

Sorry but if a dog did that to my cat I'd want it put down on the spot, and not worried about how humane it was

A dog having a taste for warm blood/ meat is not a good thing. When I lived near Aberdeen in the farming community , if a sheep dog killed a lamb it was often shot there and then. Harsh definatly but they would prob attack again.

Sympathies, Mr Bickle - also to your son and daughter-in-law.

I've only once had a cat killed by a dog (seriously injured actually, died on the operating table) and it really is horrible. I know cats can be vindictive little gits themselves, but nothing excuses an unstable dog wreaking bloody havoc.

In my case, once I'd informed the dog owner what happened, he was quite upset himself and gave me some money for the vet bill. I didn't try and get the dog into trouble - it was a wolfhound and just delivered one very deep bite (though the cat's lung, unfortunately) rather than savaging - but I did tell him to make his choice between a lead or a muzzle when he took it out in future.

If it had been a pit bull or similar, or if the owner had been anything less than cooperative, I'd have responded much as your son did. They were originally bred for no other reason than to fight to the death, for sport, and have no place in any human household.

Am very sorry to hear about the cat and the whole situation. I hope mum-to-be is okay.

We have 3 moggies and had two dogs. The two types of furballs adored each other. My terrier x washed the boy cat when he was a kitten and he looked like a drowned rat with a very perplexed expression on his face. Bloody comical it was too.

I have never met a nasty staffie. I have seen the local fuckwits with their 'hard' dogs parading up and down. I must admit I do worry about that. Cesar Milan was doing a series on TV to promote the positive side of PB's. They accounted for over 50% of dogs in pounds in Yankland. Some of them looked like nasty buggers but I guess it really is how a dog is brought up and socialised as they were quite soft in reality (well the one's shown). There are a lot of PB rescue vids on YT and again they come across as decent animals. I know nothing more about them, so I can only comment so far. Would I have a Staffie, probably. PB? Not sure unless I was 100% confident in training it properly.

Damn.

Sympathy to the cat owner from me. And yes I agree the cat didn't deserve it. Trouble is these things happen. My dog ignores other dogs but he gets a bit grumpy if they come up to him and sniff him. He don't mind it in a passing way but when the other dog won't leave he gets a bit annoyed. Countless times I have been walking him on his lead and another dog comes up and starts sniffing round him. Other dog owner says things like it's fine my dog is harmless etc. That's not the point. The point is if Blu snaps at another dog it's always the staffies fault. Seems to be completely irrelevant the fact that he is on a lead and I have asked the other dog owner numerous times to get his dog on a lead. Anyway I don't condone any animal violence but if a dog took an interest in me or blu and wouldn't back off then he would be on the receiving end of a size 12 rigger boot

Rains/ pours interface.

Just destroyed a rim in the overtaking lane of the M1. Thump, and a bang, rear went all weird. Hard shoulder showed a flat tyre, and whipping the damn thing off shows two great bend s on the inner rim.

Spare legal , just a damn 16( albeit a 70 series) when the alloys are 17s. Slung under the back too, for added dampness and filth. Happy days..

Anyway, now looks suitably shabby, but not obviously wrong, and the car still drives, so all good. Now I've just got to find a way to get clean before I check in at Leeds Bradford!

Dangerous dogs out of control was amended to include incidents occurring inside dwellings.

Courts can also prosecute owners were animals / pets have been killed and injured or whereby the owner of an injured animal believed that they would have been injured if they have intervened.

The bobby who showed disinterest sounds as if he needs to be studying for a sergeants exam - the revision will do him good.

The next time it might be a child.

Although they are usually about as much use as a wet fart it might bd worth having a chat with your local police commissioner if plod are reluctant to take action

If a dog did that to my cat, it would be put down on the spot.  Syringe or crowbar, either's good.

After being introduced yesterday to the BMW Picarsnic, I actually saw one today. Grim.

Plod aren't interested in dogs. There was some bint who used to live near us who let her dog run aroynd without a lead. It had bitten children but it took a load of mither before plod took any interest, they just wanted to pass it to the dog warden.

Anyway, Nigel, hope your daughter in law and baby are ok.

I don't think you have to report running over a dog anymore, it was due to dogs being licensed I think, back in the day.

I've given up trying to watch "The Dark Knight", as it's complete and utter pish, and in no way can compete with "Gone" on the other side, partly because it's got Amanda Seyfried but mostly because she's driving a proper Saab 900.

The 'port hole' brigade were out in force again this morning. If you cannot be fucking arsed to clear your windows properly, you really shouldn't be driving, you lazy bastard.

Oh, while I'm on, clear your n/s/r window too, that way you might actually be able to have better vision at junctions.

witnessed a horrible bike crash yesterday evening,on a bypass,i was following the female biker, and a stupid woman was parked on the side of the bypass, then literally at the point where the bike was about to go past her,she pulls out to do a u turn.Bike obviously had no time to do anything and smashed straight in the side of the drivers door/wing.

bike rider wearing full hi vis and proper bike clothes fortunately. my mrs is trained in first aid so went off to do what she had to do till the ambulance came.

as i was right behind them, and having ridden on 2 wheels for 11 years now,i was more than happy to provide a full statement.

typical biker tho, apparently she was constantly asking how her bike was (despite having broken a leg/poss something else)

That's why I'd never have a bike. The risks involved are too great, I've lost people I know in bike accidents which weren't their fault and it's not nice.

It's official, hybrids are shit in sub zero temps! Mine spent more time re-charging today than assisting! Useless piece of shit!

But then, I did have everything on: lights, heater air con, heated seats etc all 'cos the fucking dog (Chester this time) insists on going everywhere with the windows open... yes, he can work the switches!

Waits for the first person to edit the post to read: It's official, all hybrids are shit!

Completly agree. Cleared all mine this morning, i hate using de-icer on the outside so scraped it all. Got in the reliant and inside the front screen was frozen Idea - de icer on the inside. End result - clear screen - high as a kite - no recollection of journey into work :)

I couldn't get the blowtorch lit the other day when I was working on the Visa so went into the car to do it. It still wouldn't light so I pulled the door to but it still wouldn't light. Then I smelt the gas and it dawned on me that I had created a little hotbox for huffing gas so quickly leapt out of the car before I started hallucinating.

Messed with the steering box on the Frontera today at college. Had to take of the sump guard but two of the torx screws had been rounded. Eventually get them a off and clean and see a previous owner has hit all of them with a chisel or something in the past so their all buggered. God knows where I'm going to get another set

Making all new drivers do a CBT should be added to the driving test. I have been driving 24 years and have never been so scared as the day I went out for my first bike road test. Which culminated by my instructor getting knocked off his bike when a twat in a Polo thought the gap between me and the instructor was reserved just for him.

Luckily there was no serious damage. What was fun was my instructor was ex Plod and went over this Polo identifying lack of tax, bald tyre, cracked screen, etc etc. the guy tried to pay him 200 quid to forget about it. Needless to say half my road test was spent waiting for the Police to come and take statements.

First comment on test day? "Gentlemen, Karma is a bitch and you are about to find out for yourselves". So true.

No matter how defensively you ride, or how much hi-vis you slap on, some people are just fucking idiots and shouldn't be allowed to own a spoon yet alone a car

I am hoping to do my bike licence this year i should have really done it sooner, i havn't been on 2 wheels on road since I was 17 that was 13 years ago now, I'm so glad I experienced bikes before I got my car licence, it made me a better driver as I was more aware of my surroundings and impending danger.

Having just done my cbt after 30 years of driving a car it certainly is wake up call. Unfortunatly most youngsters don't go through the moped stage anymore so have no empathy with bikers. Everyone keeps telling me I am mad to get back on a bike as everyone is going to try and kill me, but I am looking forward to the challenge of anticipating what the idiot in front of me is going to do next.

You have hit the nail on the head, when I was doing 180 miles a week on a c90 I could feel very much that a lot of people in cars, women mainly, clearly had never been on 2 wheels,so had no understanding at all of why I was slowing right down or moving over my lane to avoid ice or why I couldn't go quicker than 25 in a strong headwind, and as such risked my safety on an almost daily basis.

If you are a good driver you will be able to anticipate when something like that is going to happen 9 times out of 10. People position themselves in the road when they are going to move or they slow down etc, we all see it when we are driving and I find that when on a bike I notice it even more. Most of the time you can prepare yourself for something to happen even if it doesn't.

However, like the incident above accidents do happen but they can happen in old cars too which could also be bad when hitting a modern box yet most of us do that. Look what happened to this poor sod in a Clan Crusader. Witnesses were not even aware that there were two cars involved as the taxi went straight through it.

Okay, statistically on a bike the chances of biting it are increased but they are still small. You need to enjoy life and do the things you enjoy. There were 1.3m motorbikes on the road in the UK in 2011 but only 325 deaths. That's a 0.00025% chance of death. 5,247 were seriously injured so that increases to 0.4% and 20,150 were injured or fell of etc which is 1.55%.

They think that the chance of dying in a car crash in the UK is 0.00005% each year which is not that different.

In 2010 57 people died falling off ladders. I have no idea how many people climbed ladders that year or how frequently but that's still quite a of of people doing something no where near as enjoyable as riding a motorbike.

I think that this country is gradually creating a state where people are becoming more and more scared of living life due to a constant reminder that death is round the corner in the media. Looks at kids these days. Parents won't let them play out because of fear of paedos or kidnap. Crackers. However, you have to live your life. Sometimes bad shit happens be it your fault or someone else's but there is no point locking yourself away on the off chance it might all go wrong.

There is no point suddenly taking up injecting heroin up your arse or base jumping or owt but most stuff isn't going to kill you just because you read about it more in the paper than the 1,207 people who died from accidental poisoning in 2010.
