The grumpy thread

I was more thinking of having to be present for an MoT. The airgun thing really pisses me off, having to undo them at a garage would be 11 billionty times better than a wet hard shoulder on the M1.

Duh, I read that as having to do all that as part of the driving test, sorry. There isn't always a way when there's a will, having several autoshiters about was dead 'andy :D. @dugong, that is indeed the Green Tiger (RIP) - taken at tech weekend hosted by Mr catsinthewelder, over two years ago now, blimey, where does the time go, etc.

As a last resort, withhold the rent. I had an argument with someone I worked for as a freelancer. We agreed a date to pay; he decided not to because he claimed he was skint (news flash! he wasn't). I had no money coming in at that point, so I withheld the files he needed to finish the work. He soon started taking fire from people higher up the chain because of it.

Two days and several screaming phone calls later, I got paid and the files soon followed.

An extreme measure, but it was the only way I could get him to listen. All other means of negotiation failed and he batted me off with sad sob stories.

You need to be careful withholding rent, the last think Dicky needs is the landlord turfing him out of his gaff, or keeping hold of his deposit.

But with regards to getting a response and some immediate action, withholding payment in most cases works a treat.

^That, withholding rent is usually not advised. Try giving warning that if this situation isn't resolved PDQ, you will pay to have internetz installed and deduct the cost from the rent?

Fully agreed. Do what needs to be done without getting evicted.

Hence my opener of 'as a last resort......'

Fax them a drawing of your cock and balls to help the process along. If you're struggling, Partridge can help on the artistic aspect.

Time is so seemingly fucking relentless isn't it? I really should finish the kitchen, we'd hoped to have it done by Christmas... luckily I didn't say which one as it was last year we started it!

Insurance - Ha! I've been insured with the same co. policy since I bought my first citroen cx in Jan. 1999. First CU, then CGU, now Aviva. It's with their "home and driver's club " though whatever that is as the original policy was an academic one with a royal soc. chemistry discount. Last year I ummed and ahhed about renewal and they kept it at the previous year's premium. This year it's up 10% again on last year's premium. I put my details into Aviva website and got a basic policy of £250 (£526 with full eu wide rac breakdown cover and legal protection), so I called current Aviva number to moan and they said the best they can do is to keep premium at last year's level - a full £160 more than the rac inclusive price I can get from their own website. Do they take existing customer's for mugs? I've no complaint about their service, just their costs.

Martin Lewis, money saving tightwad, on the radio yesterday said premiums were down 19% this year. Not if you stay loyal to the current provider it seems.

Anyway, given I haven't changed insurers for 15years, is it best to take out the new policy before telling the current one that you're not renewing? And do I need to ask the existing insurer for my no claims discount (13years) or is it all on-line and automatic?

Posted

You need to request that yourself in most occasions, then pass it straight onto the new insurer who will require this within 30 odd days. That reminds me I need to get details of my 9years NCB off Flux.

We've been meaning to redo the bathroom since we moved in, 12 years ago.

However we have now ordered a load of bathroom stuff which is beginning to pile up in the lounge and the fitter starts work on the 20th so all's well in the end (I hope).

I don't know what's happening with car insurance but £2,800 for a 21 year old on a thirty grand Aston seems pretty fair to me. I also just got quoted £880 fully comp on a 2006 Punto 1.2 with my learner driver 18 year old daughter.

Blimey RM, I've had to change insurer every year because of laughable renewals.

For some reason my grump about CDs went into the world car thread... Only realised when someone liked it!

Morrisey has cancer,

A spokesman for the tumour says it hopes to have the malignant growth removed.

06:30:

Scruff leaves house wrapped up warm with a packed lunch and a spring in his step. His mission - transporting a shiter's jalopy from one part of the country to the other. It's a nice morning and the birds are singing.

06:32:

Unlocks freshly re-braked beavertail lorry and climbs in, noting with pleasure the courtesy seat cover the garage thoughtfully added before delivering it home the evening before.

06:32.15ish:

Note with displeasure the glow plug light is flashing on and off rather quickly.

06:33:

Repeated key-flicking has no result. The glowers are not working. NO START

06:36:

After frantic searching of lorry, LAndrover, Peugeot and shed, realise the jump leads are in the workshop - six miles away

06:39:

Clatter 205 into life and growl through the village, waking residents in the way only a cold XUD with a slightly loose fan belt can

06:55:

Arrive at yard, unlock gate, wake nearby dogs. Get into workshop, nearly fall over a combine, find jump leads. Lock up, tell dogs to shhh

07:20:

Leads on, still no go but lots of smoke. Swear. Look for easy start, can's empty. Text shiter to let him know I'll be late. Leave Pug charging Canter and come indoors for a cuppa. Watch normal people going to work through the kitchen window.

^^ normal day then mate. 1000000000000 cool points for waking slumbering people and dogs with XUD.

It's started! Just sitting here realised i could have run a live from the battery to the glow plugs and saved all that hassle

Posted

I've got it down to a fine art...

Unlock car

get in, key to ign on

fuck around doing what I need to do

belt on

lights on

fire up

go

avoids neighborly issues, if it becomes a pain to start when really cold I'll park somewhere else so I don't piss anyone off.

The clatter from the front suspension probably drowns out the engine though, what's the normal diagnosis for rattles when turning, and a ker-clunk when hitting a stupid sunken drain cover  at speed whilst turning slightly (fine when pointing straight ahead)

Lights on before starting? That's my pet hate! Probably comes from driving old cars with weak batteries for too long.

Listening to Clegg and Cable slagging off the tories after hanging out of their arses for the last four years makes me want to punch the nearest politician.

Their hypocrisy is breathtaking - they could'nt get into bed quickly enough, and now have a pop at them for hammering everybody except the wealthy.

Remember university fees and forgemasters Mr Clegg? The electorate certainly have.

This has made me realise that parking the 205 nose in, virtually under the neighbours' bedroom window, may cause some tension as the weather cools.  Especially as said neighbour works shifts and is an all-round top bloke.

I shall henceforth reverse the noisy little bugger onto the drive.  The Peugeot, that is - not Paul.  Just to be clear, like...

Only briefly, and the battery is only 4 months old!

My foglights seem to switch themselves on independantly of the switch,so doing it before I fire her up means I can peer into the side of a neighbors car and check their off! Must buy new switches for them...

Just called FJ,and the cock on the phone was adamant that i cant buy insurance by Direct Debit on their site, and that their system had said i had paid in full,(if i was really dodgy i would have agreed) after saying that no,i hadnt,id paid a £59 deposit and was supposed to be another 3 installments he said he would look into it.After 3 hours on hold he said that he would have to set it up manually so short story is they hadnt done it,so now got to wait for the forms to come through.
