The grumpy thread

The serious coach crash on the M4 yesterday involved one of our four week old, £260k VDL Futura 2s. Coach is a write-off (thankfully, no-one in here'd drive it again) but we've just found out the driver, a professional tour driver of many year's standing and an all round good egg has lost his right foot in the accident.

Career, livelihood... gone. Fuck.

Paying for 2 hours parking but not noticing the machine swallowed a 20p so I only got one hours parking, and naturally a ticket after 1 hour 10 minutes. Yes I know I should have checked the time but it's still aggravating to now be charged extra for the privilege of spedning an extra 10 minutes in a run down, potholed, 1/4 full car park. And they wonder why the high street is dying.

Fucking Hoover, fucking carbon brushes that shit themselves after not being touched for 29 years, fucking nearly killing myself with plastic fumes when I didnt notice it sparking when using it...

We had an old cannister Hoover that was used outside in the carport/garden.. the commutator and brushes were recycled so many times it sounded like someone trying to drive a VW beetle down a dual carriageway with a bad set of points, whilst at the same time filling the area with ozone and killing all AM radio traffic in approximately a three mile radius.

It went on for about 5 years like that before finally seizing up. Was replaced with a Bosch thing that was dead within the year.

How come when eBay is deluged with cars dragged out of barns (supposedly) can I not find a sodding empty barn/garage/unit to rent?

There must be bloody hundreds out there after giving up their Minors/SD1's/Ferrari Daytonas!

Ah, that's because they've replaced those cars with another OMGBARNFIYEND which they got at an auction.   Couple of months in there with chickens shitting on the roof, shred all the DVLA documents, throw two old 1987 AA handbooks in there and Bob's yer muvvers bruvver

That's terrible. Really feel for the driver.

My mum has had a washing machine for about 5 years which broke down for some reason. I just bought her a new one, which I expect will last less. the previous one lasted at least 30 years.

I bet the washers etc we have now are much better and less likely to break but the relative cost of these things is sod all now. Back in 'nam, because a vaccum or washing machine was so expensive, you used to have people who made a living out of patching them back together as that was the better option to replacing it. Now when one breaks its easier just to replace it with a brand new one for £200 and a 3yr g'tee rather than spend £130 fixing it and running the risk of it breaking again in 6 months time. Its crackers but thats how it works I guess.

I intend to get some new carbons and a comm stick on payday and try to fix it. Annoyingly I got another motor out of another compact last night, and made damn sure to refit the carbons the same way round they were, and in the same holes...

Sparked like a fucker again on a different motor. Leaving the 4th compact I have well alone for now until this is sorted...

Yes, awful. Didn't know about the crash and hope no-one died.

Tried to fix an upright I had that was making the usual hoover sound, but with added 'grittiness'. I opened it and ran it, and it shot bits of metal across the room (I assume were the brushes), melting into the carpet!

I stripped a dyson that had shat itself and had to sand the moulton bits of carbon off the motor housing. Was like it had been shot by a pencil.

The carbons on these compacts are fine, fucking nothing wrong with them. Grrrr

I knew Moulton had his hand in bicycles as well as car suspension but didn't realise he was involved in vacuum cleaner design too.

I'll get me coat...

I looked at buying a car from one of my mates last year and the deal didn't go through. in the anticipation I added it to my trade insurance so I could take it out for a spin.

Being a colosal bell end and not having access to the list of vehicles on my policy I forgot to remove it now some numpty has stacked it and even though it was insured because it was also on my policy the insurance companies are arguing over who insured it. When I called the insurance she said "most traders don;t add the cars on until they buy them and you have 24hr access to your MID records online." Both of these statements untrue for my policy anyway. Try explaining that to police when they pull you over with no insurance.

So a combination of trying to tow the line of always adding to MID and being a massive fanny have got me into this.

Luckily as it was my mates he going to write me a letter confirming all this and that I didn't buy the car.

Me and cars are done. I'm only going to own 1 runner and 1 project and that's it!

Posted

Cort- I got stitched up in exactly the same way. I argued the fact that nowhere does my policy say that I must remove a vehicle from the MID immediately after it's no longer in my possession. Idiot that bought a car from me ploughed it into a new Range Rover the very next day.

They agreed with me but its still on my record.

You can NEVER win with insurance, it is legalised robbery whatever way you look at it.

It's fascism in its purest form. The state forces you to contract with a private corporation.

If the law requires you to be insured, there should be the possibility to do this with a public entity.

Posted

You'd think the fact that

1: I don't own the car and it's in someone elses name

2: I've never owned the car

3: It's insured by someone else

4: I have a letter from my mate that owned it saying I looked at it but didn't buy it

Would be enough but we'll see.

I was daft for not removing it but without access to an online portal to control it, it's difficult to lose track of one car.

Forgive me if I sound a little 'touchy' here...

The 'are you a Muslim' thread over on the non-car channel. Whats all that about? And why particular Islam? I hate these bloody religious discussions because it seems to bring out the worst in some people, particularly the bloody anti-religion brigade. Some/many here love to tell the world how 'organized religon iz evilz an rAycist etc... Yeh, fine we get it, but ffs, do remember that there are people here that follow certain religions and I'd have thought people here would at least respect that.

Obviously not. :|

That questionaire is bollocks, you could change the name to 'Are You A Joho, Buddist, Banger Racer, Tufty Club member?' The result would be the same.

The motion controller on my cnc lathe appears to have shat itself on the x axis. New boards are £200, but the yank bastards want £100 delivery.

How bad jake? Is it not repairable? Usually something like that would just be the output drivers or something.

Haven't a clue. Just know it's not putting out pulses. Waiting on a nice man who's fixed this sort of stuff to get back to me. Other option is throw it away and convert to mach3, but not a learning curve I really want to take.

If you really struggle bang it in the post and I'll have a nosy over it if you aren't in a rush, I fix this kind of shiz for a living. If I can fix it just CNC me brass pineapple or something

My wife phoned me today.

"Somethings fallen off the car and is dragging along the ground"

"Um... Oh right"

"And theres smoke coming from the wheel".

Phoned FathaL who kindly took my wife to work and then went back and waited with the car infill the AA came.

Meanwhile I telephoned the thankfully nearby Chevy dealer to tell them to expect a car coming in for warranty work on the back of a wagon, all fine and dandy there.

AA chap arrives, thoroughly inspects car, takes for a test drive and finds that the car is running perfect, no problems at all. The good fellow kindly took my dad back to the car after following him home to drop off his own motor and again drove fine.

Now my wife doesn't like to exaggerate things or be overdramatic so I fully accept her report.

I'm grumpy because the car obv scared her and then drove fine when inspected! ALWAYS happens?

I have to agree because personally I hate religious discussions as I know nowt about religion, so try not to get involved in them in the first place as I'd rather not upset folks by simply not understanding any beliefs or values.

Posted

I agree. Personally I'm not religious but have no problem with people who are. I identify as agnostic, and in my experience it's atheists that are often worse than religious folk for forcing their views onto other people. It's not necessary. Religion is a personal choice, the same as your choice of car or the wallpaper in your house, and we should all respect that.

That thread was harmless in the ignorable bit of the forum! Not sure it was doing much harm, but it clearly touched a nerve with a few people.

Posted

Yeah, apologies for playing the 'racism' card there   I'd had a few glasses of vino rouge and spake my mind overmuch.

FWIW, I have very strong 'beliefs', unfortunately I also have strong feelings against churches.

Anyhoo, draw a line and all that. I know it's an "open" forum, but maybe a ban on religion and politics wouldn't be a bad idea? Even with fairly mature, troll-free members, those topics tend to get the bile flowing, and I seriously doubt that anyone actually derives any personal benefit from reading about them here.
