The grumpy thread

Princess was fine post Shitefest (aka Generic Rubbish Vehicle Festival), but now I have an almost impossible to select first gear and attempts to select reverse just results in many, many grinding noises.  So I cannot reverse at all.

I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with her.  Post Shitefest blues perhaps?

Sounds clutch related. likely to be whatever connects the clutch pedal to the release mechanism. I think your is hydraulic.

Switch engine off, do gears engage cleanly? I expect that they will. Then engage reverse and try start the engine, does car try to move backwards. obviously make sure nowt is behind and that you have foot on brake pedal etc etc.

Chances are that hydraulics has air in it, simple bleed might fix. if it does but air gets back in then slave / master rebuild might be on the cards

On A series transverse there was a lever that was pushed by the clutch that was supposed to disengage the clutch. It had a ball on the end that wore away only on one side, it go so far as to take maybe 2mm off the ball before the clutch would no longer disengage correctly.

A good one looks like this

a borked one would have a slightly shaved ball :D on the left side of the pic

Mike just suggested the same thing.  I've never dealt with clutch hydraulics so it's a lovely new thing for me to learn.  Somehow this has failed between me parking the car up last night and using it this morning.  Without the engine running the gears select perfectly well which I guess strengthens the suspected hydraulic issue since the hydraulics aren't working with the engine off and therefore not getting in the way and causing the problem.

have a look at the slave cylinder, if its clean and dry externally its the master cylinder at fault. They don't last forever, probably needs a new seal kit.

hydraulics get in the way regardless of the engine running or not. but proving that gears select with engine off means that it is more likely to be hydraulic only doing 90% of what it is supposed to do and thus the clutch is not disengaging fully. first and reverse are always the first to suffer. Selecting reverse and then starting the engine with the clutch pedal down proves that the clutch is probably dragging due to hydraulics not doing their job. if the cars moves or tries to move backwards with the clutch down means that the clutch hydraulics are fecked.

Get yer clutch bled, you will learn all about bleeding nipples etc It isn't tricky

get one of these

a jam car and spanner to undo the bleed nipple on the slave. check fluid is topped up in the master cylinder, open the bleed nipple and get a mate to pump the clutch pedal slowly. you should just see clean fluid in the bleed pipe, if you get bubbles, keep going until you don't. keep checking the master doesn't run dry. When no more bubbles. get mate to hold clutch pedal to floor and tighten the bleed nipple. all done :D

don't reuse old brake fluid :D

Right, reverse works if you turn the engine off, select reverse, and then turn the engine on again.  I will bleed the system.  There are no apparent leaks from the visible bits of the clutch hydraulic system and I have no idea when it was bled last so we'll give it a try and see how we go.

Oh, and the car doesn't move when reverse is selected, engine on, clutch pedal down.  It's only as you lift the pedal that the car moves as normal.

I wasn't really sure where to post this but a little part of me just cried, a 81 year old 2CV owner has recently found this mint, 1 owner from new Honda Civic with only 35000 miles on the clock for £250.

Thought you'd got the 8 and 1 round the wrong way until I saw the last photo....

The side graphics are tolerable, the yellow wheels and grille could at least be repainted but that door mirror is unforgivable.

Oh lordy, Barry Iddon...  I had dealings with him when I edited the 2CV club mag** about a million years ago.

Looking at his 2CV, I'd have thought he was the ideal target audience for a Chrysler PMT Loser.

What a douche.

I'm not saying hes a peadophile.......................... but hes probably a peadophile.

FFS. What a car ruiner. I also wonder if any part of that 2CV actually dates from 1966.

I think we should disown him. He's not a proper 2CVer. Most 2CV folk are thankfully not him.

Posted

That is horrifying, but he owns it and I will even forgive him so long as the mirror uses the same mounting holes.

Posted

That 2CV looks so horrible with those custom bits that I want to hunt it down and set it on fire.

Posted

Hmm. So far it look reasonably reversable but looking at his 2CV he'll probably continue adding bits of shit to it until one day it's completely worthless to anyone.

Shame, quite a rare thing. That could've been doctor material.

Posted

To be fair he'll probably have to give up his licence before too long, lets hope its not too late for the Civic.

god forbid if he has touched any children, they'll be easy to spot because they will have a massive italic SPORT sticker on their jaw and some gaudy pinstripes down the side of them, poor things.

Does anyone on the M56 ever actually use the left hand lane?

Posted

FFS does this guy hail from Speke in Liverpool?

Posted

Aye that's right, not sure if he's relocated as the photos of the Civic seem in a different part to where I used to see the 2CVs.

I've lobbed a pic of that 2CV up earlier. What a wanker.
