There used to.be more choice, but governments have chosen to aggressively tax smaller landlords, in such a way that many have taken the decision to sell up.  There's enough private buyers out thier that it decreases the choice for renters. 

Renting is big business, whole housing towers, are going up all over Manchester and Liverpool, owned by corporate organisations, but you won't get a garden and you'll pay an extra £££££ for a balcony and ££££*s for a parking space.  But that's the way the government want it.  Keep the proletariat in rabbit hutches.  

As an aside, there's a young engineer I work with, lives with his parents. Looking to move out. Spends ££££ on food and fags. My suggestion that he make a packed lunch and stop smoking and find a mate to share a flat and share the bills, was dismissed, as that would involve compromise.  Meanwhile he complains that my generation have screwed it up for his generation.  Right. Because I didn't stop putting margarine on my bread when the mortgage rate went over 14% ? Because I washed in  water from a kettle, because the only way to heat it was an electric Emerson that cost £££s to run. Because my kids had clothes handed down from thier older cousins.

my next oldest is moving out again to rented  Phd accomadation at the Uni with shared areas  , wont take him as long to travel in ( thats his gain )

my gains are ......

can get to use the bathroom ,.

will save on gas

will save on electric .

the kitchen sink will be clear ,

the washing basket will be empty ,

the car is too small to put loads of shite in ,,

will have a spare bedroom to put shite in ..

not that I have noticed much ......

That's still less than renting anywhere remotely decent.

Perhaps they have so little hope of affording to move out due to salaries falling so far behind the cost of housing and other things that they may as well have some shred of enjoyment in their lives in the form of a nice car.

Changing the topic slightly..

Spotted a pair of poorly advertised Makita  nut runners on eBay, local with no delivery thus cutting out interest from bidders miles away. 
 

Set an alarm on my phone to remind me to bid.. the countdown begins, get ready with a bid 10 seconds before the end, the tension mounts enter a bid aaaand…the fucking screen won’t load. No internet connection, obviously miss the auction and have to go “cold turkey” with that buzz you get when you get a BARG. 
 
It seems to be an anomaly that you can still see the time ticking down on eBay even though the connection has been lost.  Not the first time I’ve been caught out but that’s life I suppose.

I think the "looking into things further" is key. The internet stranger is one source - if it seems to tally generally with other sources, it's probably good advice!

If it seems wrong and at odds to all the other sources you've researched, it's probably bad advice.
