Why is someone who the council believes has £15,000 to spend on non-essential home improvements still in a council house?? Isn't the whole point of council houses that they're for people who definitely don't have a spare £15,000 lying around?

Not really. I'm leaving my partner and I have custody of my 2 kids. I could private rent but I don't want the insecurity of it. I also work for landlords and the majority are c*nts. Letting agents are on par with solicitors etc. Lying corrupt w*nkers that are just out for what they can get and couldn't give a f*ck about the tenants. A council house is long term, practically your own home. The council are busy renovating my house. New bathroom, kitchen etc. All I have to do is decorate it. I've heard they give you vouchers to buy paint etc. All for £85 per week including water rates. As for money, Check my confessions of a plumber thread.

Social housing is for anyone who wants it and unlike private renting it's a secure tenancy after 12 months so you could spend the rest of your life there; why not make improvements if you can afford it?

Thankfully it's perfectly possible to have mortgage outgoings half of rental rates, certainly here it is anyway.

Depends where you live in the country I guess. In Germany there isn’t the stigma that there is here about renting, a change probably to their attitude towards renting is needed moving on because of the ratio of income to the affordability of buying.

The monthly rent I get on a house that is mortgaged on a btl mortgage is the exact same amount I pay to virgin money every month. I calculate that it will be paid off after 15 years of ownership. Unless interest rate change or the rent changes.

The actual interest is 1/3 of the rent. So I must pay tax on the difference. Or rather I must pay tax on 10% of the difference and my wife must pay tax on 90% of the difference.

I treat the tax like a pension payment. When we retire, it will have no loan and the rent will pay our own meagre living costs.

That said I need to point the rear wall this summer, and can't find a handy man who wants the job.

Occasionally, I'll go out for a meal.  Nowt fancy, just a pub or something, with the Mrs, so we can chat about life and things in general.  We don't really do that at home, because there's always a distraction of some sort, and we're both very busy people.

 

When I do go out for a meal, I don't often expect anything stellar in terms of the food I eat, but what I would quite like is a knife that will actually cut my bleeding food.

 

As first world a problem is that is, it's sort of indicative of what I'm seeing more and more of, people who just don't seem to take any semblance of pride in their work, workplace, or things they've done.

I usually have a Mora knife but recently added an Opinel.  A very useful tool.

There are some that have removed the lock ring to legalise them.

I gave my mora so much abuse I bought a second to keep nice. It's been used for all sorts including cutting plasterboard and putting curves on oak worktops

I understand the knife issue nowadays but I remember most of us carrying pocket knives when I was a boy.

I think a lot of it is common sense, I was once stopped by a policeman who asked why I was carrying an axe, as a 20 year old youth (actually the same day as my old "hiding behind a tree" profile picture.

The answer was to manage some woodland and help to build up the banks of a river which had been erroding and draining a pond which was a fairly rich ecosystem. The fact I also had sandwiches, pop, a couple of beers, boots etc with me and was covered in mud meant I was sent on my way.

Not sure the same would happen now to be honest.

They join a union and keep a record of the shit and when said manager tries to screw them over their union steps in and talks about workplace bullying and undercurrents of racism and not following the policies on discipline and performance and diversity.

Said manager gets retraining from HR.

Or Employee gets promoted cause his mum knows the MD and manager gets sacked.

Spent nearly all day tidying the garden shed/ home workshop..   Chucked loads out, but i still can't move for "good stuff that might come in handy " 

 

I was actually only  looking for my Piercing saw, which i still haven't found..but i found 3 jigsaws ,3 angle grinders,  3 soldering irons  ,5 power drills , a morticer , a smoll  milling machine and 2 petrol strimmers  under the clutter ..

Really has been making me sick reading what someone is going through over in the US right now.

 

They're one of those people who would give anyone in need the shirt off their own back, and that's what has wound up getting them into trouble.

 

They've been subject to a fantastic miscarriage of justice, and there's just nobody in any position to actually help who seems to have any interest in lending a hand.

 

To put the magnitude of how hard things are for them - at one point they became suicidal. The officials in charge of things at that time put them under even more strict supervision. Not for their welfare - but because them taking their life would be "far too easy a way out for them" as they saw it.

 

The whole situation is making me feel really really powerless...I really want to do something to help but there is literally nothing I can do.

I have a very similar one but slightly longer and stainless steel. Used to live in my toolbox/car but there's far too many stories of people getting in trouble for having lesser knives in their car...

Very good knives though, used one to cut the remains of the 205s alternator belt when it shat itself and it cut through as if there was nothing there.

Car related trumps.

 

Last night I attempted to find the small leak of coolant in my daughter's Bini.

It is going from max to min in 300 miles.

There is coolant pooling on top of the gearbox housing.

I got it hot, got the air filter box off, removed the battery and box and rigged it back up to the battery with jump leads so i can see it running.

Can I see any evidence of a leak. I can see evidence of bodged and rushed mechanicing (more of that later). But no actual pipe or hose that looks remotely suspect.

I put it back together and gave her a 5 litre container with a 50:50 mix.

Got up this morning to find a tyre flat.

Nail with some roofing material still attached.

Put the skinny spare on and drove 65 miles at 50.mph.

My range went up from 250 to 300 despite the extra miles.

The extra economy will pay for the repair.
