That is ace!

The absolute BEST COLOUR for a Mk4. Unusual to get Roman Bronze and a vinyl roof on an L though. If original, that was a private buyer trying to get a Ghia on the cheap!

I’d happily swap mine for that.

From memory they made about a million or so Marinas/Itals, maybe even more. Until about 1978 it was a consistent top five seller in Britain.

The Princess was a lot less popular, I wouldn’t be surprised if together with the Ambassador they made more than about 250k.

The Marina/Ital was also a much better ‘banger’, as long as you kept on welding it up, they were simplicity itself to maintain on a budget, probably one of the best cars for this ever. What wasn’t in the shelf in the local factors was easily available in the nearest breakers yard. Still in common sight in the early 90s, particularly in rural areas.

On the other hand, Princesses tended to die quite young, due to driveshaft/engine issues, perceived FWD ‘complication’ and very low resale values. By 1990 they were more or less extinct, Ambassadors had better build quality and less issues but again no one really wanted one after Montegos could be got for under a grand.

Late 80s early 90s When these were bangers the breakers I worked at ( most others too) we couldn't give stuff away for BL ( except minis) especially marina, maxis, Princess we used to take battery, rad & tyres off & weighed straight in, triumphs  used to fair a bit better ( mainly 1.3-1.5 dolomites)  , foreign stuff Datsuns  ,golfs, R12  . R5 was a complete pain to work on so people didn't bother Italian were more rotton than the average politician.

Ford cortina, escort, transit, Vauxhall viva,chevette,MK1 cavalier,CF were the revenue earners .

People rarely had a second car & ones as toys were even rarer.

Luxury marques Jag, BMW,Merc etc were just that any seen in working class areas would be on their last legs in hands of spivs, middle aged ones were landlords, car dealer types,4x4 ment land rover which ment farmer range rover ment land owners.

Things didn't start to change until mid 90s, I love the rose tinted idea that people have of life back then especially the one the media portrays .

What does this do? Is it a gear lock of some kind?

Screenshot_20260323_191612_Chrome.jpg

it's a Mul-T-Lock.  Locks the gearshift in reverse.  My MK2 Golf GTi I had around 2000 came with one.  From the days when hot hatches were expensive to insure because they were easy to steal

You can basically see my parents' house in those photographs.  Where the hoardings are there used to be a block of public toilets.  I think the final straw was my friend, pissed as a fart, taking a shit for the ages in the urinals.  Shortly afterwards, they were demolished.

Anyway, if someone wanted that Sierra I'd happily collect and get it to the centre of the country.

That's about right.  224,942 Princesses and 43,425 Ambassadors according to AROnline.

It's a crying shame one of them didn't bomb this thing.

See this is why I don't give to charity unconditionally, because sod's law it'll go to the person who made that.

What it needs is a front screen, wipers, a soft top, side screens, a full repaint. And different seats. That's all.  And probably vacuum up the coke they've been snorting.

Saw that at the ECR meet at Shotley on Sunday. Nice to see an unmolested one on 13" wheels and on a local Suffolk plate, but it'll need work on the rear arch(es) as a minimum.

Their fees aren't too cheap!

Yep - nearly 30% of the hammer price if bidding on line.
