I still have a very nice 3.2 Elite Omega. Its a superb car and the badge snobbery thing doesn't interest me. If someone is looking down on my badge, someone else will be looking down on theirs. Human nature I suppose.

My old landlord had a Fulvia and a Prisma.  Parked right outside our old house.  Was brilliant to wake up to.

 

If I had the money, time and space I'd have the Prisma off in a heartbeat.  Lovely car.

Ive been a Vauxhall man all my life so far, because my Dad was one, but Im done with them now. They make nothing but crap dull cars and are owned by the French. Im out.

Yup same here. My dad was, so was I. Have now moved into Skodas, Mokka was the final straw for me - the amount of time it spent off the road waiting for back order parts from Germany was no joke.

Still see a few omegas round my neck of stoke. A silver W reg 2.5 TDS drove past me yesterday while out with the dog. Did bring a smile to my face.

 

Mk5/6 escorts used to be everywhere 10 years ago. Haven’t seen one for years. I’m guessing the scrappage scheme and rust got the better of them. Think there’s a mk5b in green local but isn’t seen often.

There are almost no older cars on the road. I drive alone a 120 mile return on busy A roads regularly and to pass the time I play "spot the car older than mine", which usually is a 1999 BMW. In 2 and a half hours on a busy Saturday I will typically see 3, 2 of which are gleaming classics from the 60's.

I recently went on a Sunday over to south of Chester and back, M1, M62 from the NE of England. In 5 and a bit hours and 307 miles I saw 3 cars 20 years or older. I saw 6 new Mustangs, twice as many. You don't even see many cars much older than 10 years. In estates and car parks yes, but not out there actually going somewhere.

1999 ? That's new when you run an 88 as I do.  I never see anything older than mine. on a motorway or anywhere else, unless on a Saturday or Sunday in the summer when they are going to or from a show. 

I came up from Dorset to Midlandshire on Sunday and the oldest I saw was a T plate Avensis.

He was doing about 75 so I slowed down, as I came alongside, to give him a thumbs up. 

I don't think the middle aged Asian driver had any idea why. Obviously not a shiter.

Im moving towards Mercs. Ideally I would like a nice CL500 when its time to replace the Omega, and a 190D which is nice and tidy, as my current one is very untidy indeed, although it runs well enough.

There's a chap round my way who has a local registered red mk6 escort, its black bumper poverty spec 1.3 3 door I always hear the pushrods singing when I've got my head under something then the beep of the horn, he also has a 1.3 mk5 cortina in his garage, he keeps threatening to get me to put a clutch in it for him

Maybe I should photograph the cars coming into my workshop and start a new Tales from the Test lane type thread.

A certain Alcyone Corporation came to see me in his SVX just before xmas.

The week before a Volvo 340 variomatic came in for test.

Last year I MOTed two Chevettes although one owner was enquiring about MOT exemption so maybe that one won't be back this year.Also three Pug 205s, two were daily use diesels and the third a stunning GTi that had a nut and bolt resto three years ago.A couple of Skoda Felicias have been in the last year too.

Oh, remember that mega low mileage Renault 21 that Kieth Adams had in the summer ? yep that came in my workshop.

I reckon a thread on that would be well good. My mechanic matey, does mot's and fixing, is sympathetic to older motors and he gets shit loads of chod through his doors. From Yanks to Rollers. Might have a chat with him and see if he could do some pics as he is a definite shiter, although not on here unfortunately.

Fiat Marea, i've genuinely not seen one in the metal for over 3 years, and judging by how few have come up for sale. it's not just a local thing.

 

Renault Espace, in fact, i don't think i've seen one at all for over a year, Mk1,2,3....nothing!, seems the rise in SUV's and smaller people carriers like Piccasso's etc pretty much killed them off.

There's a Marea Weekend in daily use around here. It's used for hauling shite about to raise money for an animal shelter.

Since the pic was taken in March it's somehow passed another CT. I had to move it about the farm and it was so loose and baggy selecting a gear was interesting, all gears were there, just not necessarily where you'd expect them to be. It did have around 300K on the clock though. It narrowly missed a dent in the roof when I fell off a ladder attempting to wire lights to those rafters. Obviously I'm still here, just bust a rib.

Living in Southend-On-Tat you don't have to look too hard for many of some above suggestions.  Plenty of 90's Escorts Sierra's Cavaliers Nova's etc... Mk1 Mondeos, Mk3 Fiesta's, plus 80s jap stuff is aplenty. 80s/early 90s Mercs, Volvo's and BMW's are common sight. Add to that some prime 70s stuff like Hillman Avengers, Marina's, Allegro's Cortina's Capri's Granada's, but there are some once common cars I cannot find anymore.

To most people cars are disposable items like washing machines. When the economics (including garage labour rates) decide its better to replace than repair, then they get rid.

This is good for us strange people who like older cars and don't like to see them consigned to being recycled into baked bean tins.

The same people turn up to classic car shows leaving their 3 year old modern in the carpark and walk around banging on about how they wished they had kept their Capri/Granada/XR3 etc etc...  but were all binned off for the same reason the current modern will be lobbed/part ex'd in a few years.

i'm not saying a 1999 is an old car, it's just my daily. The numbers wouldn't change much if it was a 2006. As I said no one drives older cars anywhere.

I know they still seem relatively common down south, but i think there's probably only about 2 Citroen ZX's in Scotland these days.

 

There were plenty of them even 3 or 4 years ago, (including 1 5 minutes from me that was for sale, on the same street as 4 others) they all just seemingly vanished in the space of 6 months.

 

Mk1 Puntos, most dead due to modification or floorpan rot (albeit i know of a local dealership fresh model from 1996), similar story with Mk2's.

 

Haven't seen a Mk1 Mondeo locally for years. Oddly Cavaliers are still relatively plentiful (in comparison at least), unlike Mk1 and even Mk2 vectras.

 

Actually, i haven't seen a Fiat Stilo for a while, my bet is most had unsolvable electrical issues.

Weirdly, although I've seen a few Mark 1 Mondeos this year (some are in my spotting thread) it's the Mark 2 that seems rarer.

 

Even Mark 3 Mondeos seem to have thinned out a lot. Still reasonably common, but not in every street and every car park like they used to be.
