Also make sure the engine earth strap is good - run a jump lead from engine to battery negative to check.

Chrysler Voyager - ABS  woes

My '04 Chrysler hadn't yet reached 223k miles but the ABS warning light was sometimes on, so I had a mechanic at the local garage look at it one one lunchtime ..and he cleaned thick rust off the serrated ring - but that did nothing more than have the light now permanently on.

A month later and the 'brake warning light' stays on,

And recently the 'Tracking-off' now also stays on.

Regarding the ABS he advised that the pick-up sensor had probably been ground away by the rust and so was probably shot, but that to change it usually is a PITA because the bolt shears off and then the lug breaks off the hub..  He doesn't want to do it (on the side) probably because it'll take too long.

Personally I don't need ABS but next month the MOT is due.  So this afternoon I thought I'd try to gently get the pick-up sensor bolt out..  Lo n' behold it sheared off.  The bolt looks like a 6mm thread, and judging by trying to drill it out - the steel is toughened. Steel into aluminium under a wheel-arch = irretrievably corroded.  I removed the disk and drilled it out as best I could - and it's now reassembled with a nut & bolt.   And the lights still stay on.

Looking at the face of the sensor I see two black dots (possibly the ends of carbon ?) and wonder if these were originally / should be sealed under a layer of plastic ?

So my question is.. Is the ABS + Brake + Tracking-off warning lights all now being on likely to just be the one sensor, or what the ..  is likely to being going on.?

And is it something I can fix myself (I don't have a electronic diagnostic thingy or special tools) or do I need to take it to a garage. ?

Thanks,

Bfg.

p.s. OK I'm an old giffer but .. what is 'tracking-off' ?   I know the push-button switch is on the top of the steering column cover, but I've never used it, nor do I know what it's for.

Only guessing, but TRAC OFF will refer to the traction control system that controls slippage at each wheel in the case of too much welly/too little grip. It relies upon the same sensors that the ABS uses so it's no surprise it's not enabling.

If two wheels are out of balance, and the rolling circumference is not exactly the same, the out of balance forces could add and then cancel as the wheels go in and out of phase with each other (every 5 seconds). Especially noticeable if they are the front wheels. I remember this effect on my wife's Civic. New set of tyres fixed it.

New set of tyres fixed my problem as well :)

Thanks,

Yes of course, Trac = Traction rather than Tracking.  But surprised that a Chrysler people carrier with manual gearbox might be so sophisticated.   Not to mention a seemingly short-stroke 2.5ltr diesel having enough grunt to spin wheels.!  But I take reassurance from it being a directly related to the ABS sensor rather than something else / another problem which needs fixing.

I don't suppose It's legal to remove the ABS & traction off the car, and have it MOT tested ?

I'd be plugging that in and watching the wheel speed sensor readings in live data . My bet is that the sensor is fine but the steel ring is buggered . What is the fault code ? Is it an abs sensor open circuit one or a coherence fault ?

Afaik you can take it away but all parts of it inc the abs pump/block have to go

Bits like the abs rings can stay if they are an integral part of something else ie driveshafts

But you you will probably lose brake proportional control to the rears if controller by the abs valve block

I squished in the bushes into the arm using a much abused vice. However one of the went a bit squiffy and misshaped around the edges. Will this be ok?

Neighbours 57 plate Picasso needs dmf and clutch, £1500 quoted, in Kent, is that right?

Mrs T has a 2014 1.3 Petrol Yaris that we had from new. It’s done 55k and it goes to Toyota for a service every 10k as is the schedule.

Every time it’s been the oil is overfilled by say 300/500ml. Is there a way to see if there is a service bulletin to see if Toyota specify this?

It never uses a drop between services.

I remember I had a mk3 mr2 the one with the crappy earlier oil burning engine, and Toyota had a service bulletin saying for the dealers to overfill slightly, I keep meaning to ask when it goes in for a service, but all ways forget.

clean all the terminals on the battery / clamps with wire wool see if that makes any difference.

Also make sure the engine earth strap is good - run a jump lead from engine to battery negative to check.

Tried the above- no joy. I'll have to drag to the garage and see how much they are going to rip me off for. Ho hum

About £700 too dear. £300 on the DMF, clutch and concentric release bearing say then assuming say 6 hour at £40 an hour at a non VAT reg garage, more obviously at somewhere VAT reg.

Thought so, I'll get him to try the bloke I normally use locally, see if he can get a more sensible price. Cheers. He also had another quote for £1650. Not sure if there is something else wrong, as it was a quick conversation in the street to be fair.

It's running as rough as you like (heard it start up the other day)

MOT's.

If I present a car for it's MOT before the expiry of the current one and the one month renewal window, i.e after only 9 or 10 months, if it fails, is the current MOT still valid?

Posted

Yes. But if it fails on something dangerous then I doubt the 'its got a valid MOT' argument would get far in court.

Depends what shape picssso. If it's a c4 picssso then good luck doing a clutch in 6 hours . I allow a full day . Officially according to autodata its engine and box out but you can do it without but it's tight .

I've ordered a new sensor, as for £19.50 inc postage it's worth a try.  Now that the rusty bolt is out it'll not take many minutes to swap it out.  I'm ever the optimist that it'll save me a big garage bill or righting the car off. ;)

It's due to arrive on Wednesday so hopefully (pending weather) I should get around to doing it before the weekend.

Dangerous and potentially expensive game esp with cheapy ebay parts which have been known to be faulty out of the box so lead you completely down the wrong path . Fingers crossed it's ok

Assuming you spent all day it it the bill still wouldn’t come to £1200 or so labour. That’s £135 an hour labour! Even Pimlico Plumbers wouldn’t charge at that rate.

You see that blue plastic bit in the box of sockets here?

What the hell is it for? I have no idea. Ive always ended up chucking it away.

It's so you can twist the socket by hand for speed to hand tighten or loosen bolts.

I've only ever seen them in cheap kits. More expensive ones have driver handles and/or the extensions have knurled edges for the same purpose.

I've found these useful for introducing "drag" to keep the ratchet working when the nut/bolt is loose but access is tight.

I need to get new plates made for the range rover, mainly because I've become a private plate wanker, but that's not the point of the post.

I can get some pre 2001 font plates made up, but the maker won't put his post code and bs number on them. Will it fail the mot?
