You've not been caught again already..

That would be bad! No I haven't, just thinking about if they can find out.

When I did mine I was told there was no way they can check, and that all insurers except admiral have agreed not to ask.

I suppose you'd be invalidating your insurance if you lied to a company that did ask, but I'm pretty sure they can't get the info from anywhere else.

Home spec lift?! That also looks like it's been made from the front of an old Ford Cargo.

Nae, these were manufactured and sold to the public, mine moved the odd AX or 205 but (unlike this vid stolen from elsewhere on Autoshite) had a winch and locking pin also I didn't use baling twine as a safety feature.

Anyone know what type of oil I should be putting in my 1.5 Colt?

I went with 15w40 mineral for a top up earlier but I've no idea really

I have posted on a different thread that: 'all forum members are fucking morons' will every one now hate me (even more) and will I get sent to Coventry?

Please God anywhere but Coventry... :)

Autodata says for a moderate climate you can use 15W/40 or 10W/40. Dexron II for the transmission.

What's this?

IMG_0123.jpg

Found it in the dirt at an old Luftwaffe airfield a few months ago, looks like this after a dunking in brick acid.

I can see something differential-ish, it's either bent or hinged at the centre, Some kind of gyroscopic thing maybe?

Worth a post on one of the aviation archaeology sites?

Depending on size I was wondering if it might be the mechanism for governing propeller pitch - feathering etc - but I suspect it's a lot smaller than that.

Definitely a differential of some sort - how big is it roughly?

Only a couple of inches, no addition for a drift weapon build, sorry to disappoint.

The side lights on my Toyota regius are not very bright. Can I change them to something brighter or is there a heat problem or something . Its a R reg so no fancy led's fitted. Thank you and I apologise for my lack of brains.

Might it be part of one of those gyroscope instrument things that tell pilots the pitch and bank angles? Or a heading indicator? It looks a bit like some of the things in this wikipedia article:

The sidelights on the HiAce are also very dim, I replaced them with Leds for £3 and a much better result.

Insurance is due.. and imho Insurance brokerage companies are criminal Fukrs..  Why ? ..well I'm glad you asked ..

..today's fully comp quotes on my '04 Chrysler Grand Voyager XS CRD  2.5 diesel, valued at £4.5k with £300 excess and 9-years no claim (protected).   Oh yeah.. I'll soon be 60 firk'n years old (..when this insurance is to start from) !

It's time for  INSURANCE  NAME  &  SHAME.. (fanfare sounds !!!! )

RIAS quoting Ageas (renewal)  : £191.00  (last year it was £176.99)

Adrian Flux - Ageas ................. : £367.90

Hastings Direct ........................ : £355.50

Swinton      - Ageas ................... : £361.00

Saga       - Aromas ? ................... : £349.56

Footman James  - Ageas .......... : kindly rang back (after 7pm because they were so busy earlier) with a price of £535.46 !

..though the man did say that because they specialize in classics & the less usual - their

quotes for 'modern vehicles' are rarely that competitive.

Now... when talking to Swindon ; the lady 'second requoted' after I told her that I'd had a quote for under £200.  She put the same details back into the computer and the quoted premium (for exactly the same insurance with the same company) dropped from £361 to £188.39.!

Between them, these brokers quoted prices range from :  £535.46  to £188.39 = £347.07  difference - for exactly the same insurance, with the same company.!   To my mind cheating customers (who simply don't know to ask &/or are too tired to think clearly after a long day at work)  of this sort of money is criminal.. and a reminder of double glazing salesmen of old.

Further to the conversation with the lady at Swinton, I asked if she could repeat the process of requoting .. hoping she might drop it down by another £173 !?   Her computer wouldn't allow that unless  details changed,  so she simply changed the excess from £300 to £500 ...which dropped the price by another £20  to  £168.63

Thinking about it I wonder if I'd be wise to spend that extra £20, because even a small fender-bender soon goes over £300,  and so spending that £20 might save me £200. ?   What do you guys reckon ?   Is £20 to insure a possible extra £200 claim - good value / sense or not ?  (..after all I've not had an accident in the past 5 years, so statistically I'm probably due for another one soon ?).

For all you younger guys reading this - I'd just say "shop around & be cheeky enough to ask".

As for myself,  I keep a spiral-bound notebook for the purpose noting down (as a table the names & telephone numbers -v- the insurance quotes from each, for all my vehicles, each year  (and likewise for central heat oil quotes).  And although this year my shopping around might only save me a few quid - at least I'm confident that I'll not be paying £-hundreds more than is presently the going rate.  btw.. IPT (insurance premium tax) is going up to 10% next month.

Hope that helps,  Bfg  B)

Do we have any shiters living in the USA?

Might've found a fuel sender for the Colt but it's US domestic shipping only....

I am heading out that way on Tuesday. I own a property there so have an address in Florida you can send it to. Case will be empty on way back, so can bring it with me.

Redex does it work or is it just a snake oil?

It can do some good if used once in a while. 5th gear did a little feature on recovering 'lost' horsepower from an older car, I think it was a Corrado VR6. They used Redex first and it did give about 5% increase in power! Check it out on youtube.

Posted

If 5th Gear did the test repeatedly under the same conditions and with calibrated equipment, with and without Redex, then properly analysed the results and found that the 5% was statistically significant, then they may have a point.  Other ways of 'testing' are pretty much meaningless.

Posted

bet lots of cars give 5% more after being thrashed over and over on a rolling road....blows all the cobwebs out etc same as an italian tune up

Posted

I think I read that 'old' redex used to do what it said it would and was worth using, but then various active ingredients got banned and now its basically naptha and red food colouring and doesn't really do anything . The additional economy claims are probably based on the fact you are adding more combustible liquid to the fuel tank, which you don't factor in when calculating MPG based purely on the amount of pez you put in.

Other opinions are available, though may incur fees. Losses may exceed your initial investment. etc etc

Posted

plus in the ye olde days of the good stuff cars got coked up like a mofo , newer stuff doesnt really coke up much at all

Redex does it work or is it just a snake oil?

I'm off to the Citroen Chevrons meeting tomorrow and partly due to the fuel light coming on four days ago I was fully intending to chuck some Redex in the tank then fill up with premium diesel.

Just been to the Torq station, where I almost always go and filled up with standard diesel.

So much for god intentions then :(

Is there anyway they can find out if you have done a speed awareness course?

Depends what they ask.

If they ask if you've done a speed awareness course, they'll know as you'll have to tell them.

If they ask if you've got any motoring convictions, then the SAC is not a conviction so you can truthfully say no.

Diamond insurance had a special section for it.
