If I buy a private plate of the dvla and not use it straight away, do I need to do anything else???

Or just buy it and not put it on anything, I am not making money or anything it's just too new to put on anything.

So might not be used for ages.

I'll be on a ten year retention

Just file it away safe that's all you need to do

The F is on a 15,000 mile a year insurance policy. But the insurance company didn't ask me the mileage.

How will they know?

Posted

I thought that but the MoT & the insurance dates don't match.

Edit to add, the MoT  history will show the mileage between MoTs, but the car has been MoT'd for 7months before the insurance was taken out.

Posted

They dont care until there is an accident serious enough to warrant them looking into it as a possible excuse to refuse your payout. They will then check the previous MOT records and see if you have lied or not.

Posted

There's a difference between mileage limit and estimated annual mileage. Most regular policies ask how many miles you're going to do to weight the premium - do 50k, pay more than someone doing 5k. However they don't ask for mileage so at best they'll estimate it from MOT records, and get stroppy if you're miles out. Probably won't be able to prove a few percent over.

Classic will usually ask for start mileage and cancel your policy if you forget to wind the odo back before you hoon your car into a bus full of nuns on their way to the kitten show. One mile over gives them the right to void your cover.

Posted

Yeah on my classic insurance I had to give starting mileage, and mileage for both cars when I swapped to a different one, but they didn't ask for an ending mileage.

As already said they will only bother investigating if they're trying to not pay out for something.

IIRC they can't limit your 3rd party cover if you're over mileage but I can't remember where I read this.

I told them I'd do 3k in my camper but only ended up doing 900 last year. I felt like I'd wasted money but when ringing round for quotes to renew it made no difference whether I said 1k or 3k. It also made no difference when flux "mirrored" my 12 years NCB either.

You can lie all you want to get the insurance, but if you flip it roof first into a centre for rehabilitating disabled kittens they will check out the declarations you made. Despite any lies on your part they are still legally required to pay out the thrid party claims, but wont pay out for your damages if you are fully comp and are within their rights to pursue you to recover what they pay out to third parties.

I'm a wee bit worried about my mileage in the Volvo. I estimated 8000 miles, which I didn't get near with previous cars, but I'm going to be well over this year because of my habit of swanning off to Wales or Skye etc. all the time.

Often things that you think will reduce your insurance, like driving a smaller car or doing fewer miles, can actually increase it.

If you think you might go over the limit then ring them and increase it. I had to do it on my Rolls last year. It cost 30 quid for the change but at least I know if the worst happens I will be ok.

Here's a question then, say you limit your mileage to 5k per year and you drive it 3k your self then youve stayed within your limit yes, but I have a habit of lending my vehicles out and my mates drive them third party from their own insurance what then? My hippo has done more miles at the hands of mates than I've done myself the friend that has it now has already done 4k this year in it,

What the odometer says isn't the issue, the mileage limit is intended to restrict how much you use it, and therefore how likely you are to crash it. You might want to keep a record of who had it and when, just to cover yourself.

The only problem you might face is if your friends turn out not to have 'driving other cars' cover on their policies, not everyone does now. If they don't, and they crash injuring nuns/kittens/etc, your insurance will pay compo to the kitten's mother. Then you'll have to* pay them back.

Cheers my friendly local mechanic is sunning himself at the moment so may try one of the cheapo eBay ones on the off chance.

You can get the code from the car. Search online for Focus Secret Dashboard Menu. It does a dial sweep and a few other bits and will tell you any stored fault codes via the digital mileage display. Cost £0 Did it on my 2001 Tddi

Here's another really stupid question,

How much profit would you be happy to make on a car Without feeling guilty, I've made a hunna here and there before but this shogun sport I bagged has shocked me a bit,

I bought it two months ago and I just ran it through wbac and was proper shocked at what it came back at,

Good point, in the summer I had a shortfall of legal roadworthy cars. Fatha N has many cars and was in France for the summer ,so I borrowed* one. An SLK, Mrs N and oldest daughter both jumped at using it as the sun was shining, after about 3 weeks I mentioned to Fatha I'd got his Merc, "OK " says he "But don't put too many miles on it ,because I'm almost up to my 3,000"

Oops, we'd done about 1,500 by then, so it cost me £40 to rectify before returning it. The thing is all the miles whilst in my care we're done on my traders policy- I even added it as a personal car because daughter who's a named driver used it for work a couple of times.

Presumably he could have told them that and they could dismiss the miles we drove, probably cost more in admin charges than Clocker George's £40 though.

Couple of interesting points there, gents, thanks to all.

For clarity, I was talking about the MGF, which is on a estimated 15k miles per annum policy. RAC insurance didn't ask me the mileage for that car/policy.

On the X1/9, I have an estimated 6000 miles per annum, and they DID ask me the mileage, along with a photo to prove it.

But, if I read the above answer's correctly, in both cases, those cars are insured for me to drive those total/estimated distances. If President Barrack Obama comes to stay, and he asks for a cabby in either of my cars, his mileage is to be deducted from my annual totals? Have I got that right?

I don't feel bad about making any amount of money off a car unless it's family or friends who I probably wouldn't sell s car to anyway. If you're happy and the buyer is happy what difference does it make ?

I never get the omg he bought it at auction for 3 and he's selling it for six what a rip off argument . If they think they can get 6 for it then good luck to them and if it's really of the planet we get to laugh at them in the bargains thread.

Making money on a car ?????? What is this weird concept I never make money on any of mine. I thought I would make a killing on the Maser but spent so much on it trying to get it right the profit disappeared. I ended up with a 20 quid loss.

I feel that way as well but I am not just talking hundreds though which I wouldnt mind,

Car was a grand but I offered eight and we shook on nine, roll on two months and wbac have offered £3480, now even after they screw me down £600 that's just to much to make without some conscience kick in or worse still karma may suddenly deal me a blown engine or some other expensive misfortune.

Depends on the circumstances in which you bought it

If it was a friend or family letting you have it cheap then yes feel guilty

If it was just some stranger asking £1k then an honest deal has been done

Frankly, if it were me there would be wheelspin marks from my front door to the nearest WBAC depot.

Family is mentioned above and I would add in perhaps not screwing over some old biddy who doesnt know any better, but those cases aside, if the car was bought fair and square, get it sold and have a very merry christmas.

My colleague has bought a Spaceship spec Civic Type R, 8 years old, 36k, 3 weeks ago from a Honda dealers.

As she got used to that (in comparison to her previous Puma, which I need to put in the Tat thread...), she noticed that the clutch was squeaking. This has been diagnosed as a duff master cylinder (by a different Honda franchise). Unsurprisingly, she's not happy that it wasn't spotted before she bought it.

So what rights does she have? Honda are playing hardball atm, but I would have thought that as a main stealers, they would have had a duty of care to make sure that something fairly noticeable like that is sorted before it is stuck on the forecourt.

Had a couple of spurious messages pop up on the dash today: AIRBAG and then later, CHECK GEARBOX. Both of these message lasted a second or so and then went. I am worried.... Any ideas?

Battery?

re : selling the shogun and making a profit - even if you did buy it cheap from an old biddy or family member, why not share a bit of that profit with them - a nice little Christmas treat for them and a nice clean conscience for you. and more money to spend on shite :)
