Or they could do what our govt do. Sell diesel tax free and charge "road tax" on distance travelled, which must be purchased in advance. Then it makes no difference what is in the tank. Also your farm tractor and anything that is not used on the road, has not paid any tax . Simple !!!

Don't forget to always tell the bellend that asked after the auction has ended that you sold it for scrap money. This quite often makes them apoplectic

I seem to recall that if you use over a certain amount per year, HMG do take an interest, but there's no duty payable under that figure [which is lots!]

That's only true for private motorists, the threshold is 2500 litres per year.

Business users pay duty from the off, 58p per litre according to Ian Government. That's why commercially sold biodiesel is so expensive.

Here's Ian McDonald's blurb about biodiesel

My Renner 25 v6i that I'm recommissioning (last roadworthy 94 etc etc)  has 2 fuel pumps......

I've replaced the inline pump & filter (under o/s sill -ridiculous place to put ), but still couldnt get anything through, so followed the line into the tank (Not easy -had to chisel a hole in the rear floor to access), where I found another pump, submerged at the bottom of the tank.

Completely dead, filled with brown glue. In the short term, to get it running properly for evaluation, I'm going to just stick a pipe in & rely on t'other pump.

Anything wrong with this -am I missing something? Why does it need 2 ?

Eventually, the other pump will become overworked and will fail. Fine as a short-term fix. On most injected stuff, there seems to be a tank pump to get the fuel to the engine bay, then another pump to get it up to suitable pressure. If the tank pump has gone, this engine bay pump is therefore having to do twice as much work. Read a lot about this when I had the Rover 75 as often there are few symptoms when the tank pump has gone, but if you don't do something about it, the more expensive engine bay pump goes pop.

The fuego does appear to of had a replacement rear hatch as when I was sorting out the rear lights I found a couple of bits of glass and the sticker on the screen isn't right. Saying that there is no obvious sign of a rear impact, probably had a few car park dings on the bumpers. When I had it on ebay I had a bloke ring me up moaning that I sold it off ebay as he would of given me 2 grand for it. Worth a try on there and certainly worth a grand I lost money on it at 900 so it will be a good buy for someone. Why did he kick the tyres ? Was he trying to pull a fast one and say there was a problem with them. I had the wheels reconditioned and 4 new tyres that have got a warranty on them

I found a couple of pieces of glass as well - I suspect the hatch has just been smashed. There is no sign of any rear end damage at all. He was kicking the tyres because that's what Quentin Wilson's 'buying a used car' advice book from 1988 says. He was booting them, while looking at the engine. Wheels are obviously in A1 condition, I think they're the best tyres I've ever had on a car. Someone offering 2k though - ouch!

Fuego - There's not many about so it's hard to price them. There was a tidy looking red GTX that sold a couple of times last year or so for a bit over a grand I think. But it was tidier than your turbo, however as a GTX it was worth less ....

£2k does sound quite hopeful, but if someone wants it they'll pay it ... I think advertising it for £1500 would get a bit of interest.

I thought it had been provisionally sold anyway???

I do want a fuego at some point, but have 5 cars too many at present ....that said I'll swap you my beta spider (convertible) for the fuego ;)

Probably been asked before but I'm a) tired and B) old:

What's the big deal with all this 'Sent by my Blueberry using Flapjacks and crackerjack' guff? Haven't used it so don't get the point, what am I missing?

It's people posting via the tapatalk app on their phones, what they haven't realised is that you can edit your signature in the settings part of the app.

Oh, cheers. Soz to sound the simpleton again, but what's wrong with visiting the forum without an app?

They dont stop stuff running into you.......... :ssch00101:

It has reversing camera & sensors as well now,but i suspect that they wouldnt help either :common070:

That dent is dead ringer for a post though.... Which don't tend to get up much in the way of speed.

OK then!

The HH 'zato is potentially on the list of cars to go, but with the spares I've got for it (including a complete Avanzato) I'd be looking for a bit more than the Fuego is worth.

If you are interested in a rough around the edges used rally car we may be able to come to some sort of deal.

Thanks DW -thats how I  read it.

Sadly the 25 doesnt.         We've replaced the ''front'' fuel pump (actually under the rear sill- right in line with a mud slinging tyre) and removed the borked fuel tank pump -putting a length of straight flexi in its place, but it'll barely tick over.                  Insufficient flow for a relaible tickover, -despite there 'appearing' ample pressure.   WeI even tried removing the filter to see if that would make the difference. Nada.

Because its an unknown quantity, i've tried tipping a large cupfull into the plenum, and the engine roars -so I guess I need a tank pump too, before it even moves.

Why are they so damn expensive? BM & VW tank pumps -£25. Renner tank pumps -£150?

Any way, car seems solid although all the brakes are shafted. Rusted calipers, failed flexis, tired lines means mucho swearing & blooded knuckles.

Hey ho.

At the risk of sounding (even more) stupid, are there no other in-tank pumps that will fit? I think some Volvos (740?) had them and possibly some 1980's Mercs.

Posted

I think those bosch high-pressure pumps are unable to prime themselves, thats why you need a lift pump or to put the bosch pump under the pez line in the tank. If you can rig something up with the bosch pump lying on the ground (i.e. with a gravity feed to the pump) you'll probably get it running OK.

Anyone seen this happen before? Clutch centre plate has been rubbing up against the bolt heads that retain the flywheel, I think this is probably the result of one of those fast fit cluch places pulling the old flywheel skim scam as much as because stupid germans used big ignorant looking socket head bolts instead of shallow hex, or even recessing them, silly squareheads.

And while I'm at it I'd like to give a big shout and a nuff rezpeks to Lidl penetrating oil spraycan, just used it to help remove 6 of the skankiest rustiest studs from a mingy old exhaust with very little drama.

Re the thing about biodiesel and trucks: the ultimate reason why the big fleets don't (and won't in the foreseeable future) use proper recycled WVO is that the vehicle manufacturers won't entertain the idea. I know Renault and Mercedes made it well known that anyone using more than the 5% mix could kiss goodbye to their warranties, citing potential damage to fuel lines/seals/pumps. The fleet engineers won't take that sort of risk.

They're ok with LPG however, but I know from experience that the LPG route is a PITA: you're straight back into road fuel use tax issues, and all the record keeping and paperwork that goes with it. The company I know who've taken that route, regret it now, because there's a big tank of LPG in the yard for forklifts and such, but they can't put it in the trucks, any more than they'd use the cherry the fridge units run on. Tesco and the Co-op tried CNG in that way, and that didn't work out too well either.

Better for the likes of McDonalds to sell the WVO and probably claim some sort of tax break for not flushing it down the drain and killing otters, but sticking the 'safe' 5% mix in the trucks at the end of the process. Bloody greenwash tactics, they're all at it. [/cynic mode]

My Austin Atlantic suffers badly from fuel starvation after it's been idling for a while, ie. stuck in traffic. It seems to be a common theme with old Austins of that era, I've spoken to three owners of similar cars (A70 Hereford, AH 100 and another Atlantic) that all have/had the same problem. Something to do with not liking the modern unleaded.

Anyway, the guy with the Healey 100 told me that he now puts a splash of diesel in the tank at every fillup, and it's fine. Bullshit, or is this really worth a try? I'm rather sceptical myself.

I really want to get this running problem sorted out as I'm rather put out that I've missed the Austin Counties rally this weekend in Brum because I wasn't confident enough in the Atlantic's ability to make it.

Its pretty tiny Cavette- I think the ''others'' are too big for the orifice,m sadly.

I tried that Boll- gave it a head height of 3 feet by routing it down from a can on the roof.. Nada

Define fuel starvation - lumpy or no idle? Or stalls because carb is literally out of fuel ?

Posted

Really lumpy, spluttering and smells of petrol. It never actually cuts out but is virtually undriveable in traffic.

Posted

This could be an incredibly shit/ dangerous idea but how hard would it be to run a road car on methanol......only ask as it seems to cost a third of the price of pump petrol and i have a source of supply ( mate runs his grasstrack bikes on it )

Just throwing it out there, feel free to hurl abuse and/or rotten veg at me for being mongtarded.

Wiper blades, should they last longer than 5 months/5K miles?

I paid £28 for some genuine Renault ones from the dealer and they have wear indicators on them in the form of a circular sticker which is transparent but as the wipers get worn an orange triangle with an ! Inside it begins to appear as they get worn, anyway its fully appeared meaning theoretically the wipers are worn, except I'm not sure how this little sticker decides the rubber blade is past it or what happens to make the sticker show the worn warning indicator, what I do know is from digging out the receipt I only put them on on 30th Jan this year, I've hardly used them. Only done 5K miles since then and they still seem to clear the screen fine. Obviously don't want to fork out for more if there's most wrong with these.

Posted

Wipers last about six months from experience. Cheap ones tend to be more plasticky and the metal frame is crappier.

Any bits of debris will wear the rubber out, it's just the nature of the material.

Q1 - would it be possible to have an exhaust system made from brass?

Q2 - what would an old English car be like to run as a daily? I'm thinking of princess/ambassador/marina/Austin 1100

Here's a flowchart re: the wipers.

Do they still clear the screen satisfactorily?

You can use diesel, but even better would be a dash of two stroke oil. Just as little as a shotglass full per tank of petrol is fine.

Has nothing to do with unleaded btw. Petrol wasn't leaded when the Atlantic was new either. But modern petrol is much too high octane for those low compression engines and that leads to excessive pyrolysis. Some added diesel or two stroke oil seems to take care of this.
