I found some old kitchen chairs that (look like they) have chrome plated frames. They have a bit of surface rust, any ideas to remove it or reduce how obvious it is?

Try a metal polish it's slightly abrasive so should remove some of it.

Brillo pad, wet, followed by a damn good session with the Autosol (Note, do not confuse with Anusol)

Oxalic acid is supposed to be good for cleaning up rusty chrome, although you leave things soaking in it so it's not ideal for something as big as a chair.

I'd heard cheap vinegar in a bucket was good as a rust remover for chromed things too.

Has anyone here ever rented a car in Canada and also used it in the US? Is such a thing even possible now that we're all potential terrorists...? :?

I have an old car to tax, it's old enough for a free disc which is nice but hasn't been taxed in my lifetime so the V5C states the tax class as 'not licenced' rather than 'historic'. I've had this often before, but a very long time ago so can't remember what I did about it. Am I right in thinking the nice chap at my local Post Office will hiss and snarl at me to fuck off and die? Is this going to mean a visit to a DVLA office where I queue for 6 hours behind traders with hygine / odour issues, Jeremy Kyle bints with noisy feral brats and Nigerians who WILL get their uninsured car taxed if they shout long and loud enough.

That's a visit to the local DVLA sadly. 'Not licenced' means the car was off the road when the records were updated in 1983 or whenever (but the then owner actually bothered to fill out the forms for a new style logbook). Seriously though, it's no different to getting a logbook updated from PLG to Historic, they'll print you out a tax disc while you wait, job's a good 'un.

I've sold my volvo but haven't replaced it yet. I can't freeze my insurance, but is it wise to leave it on the volvo? Apparently, it's an offence to have a car insured twice?

Don't want to cancel since I'd lose my year ncb. Any suggestions (other than get another car)?

What sites do you use to get cheap train fares?

Trainline charges you a couple of quid for sundries. Find out your route then it's usually best to buy from that operator directly. Play around with it too, break up your route etc. Eg I'm going to Cumbria in a month, Euston to Whitehaven was £40 advance but Euston to Carlisle was only £20 and it's a £9 walk up fare to Whitehaven from there...

I've done it the opposite way, but that's not really of much help.

Thanks Angry Dicky, now I know, so it's a nice trip to the reg office at the start of the month just after a bank holiday, I anticipate an entirely pleasant experience, no way will it turn me into a rabid puppy stomping serial killer.

Does anyone know how hard it is to get a vauxhall key of the type in the pic below.

The calibra only came with one key, so ideally need a spare.

I think it has a proximity chip in it.

I don't have the key number, card with the details on or any other useful bits like that

Am I in for a painful bum rape from a dealer or an auto-locksmith with a flashy van?

Do vans have to be fitted with commercial tyres? The Ducato needs two new tyres on the front; they're 215/75R16, which is a size that seems to be used on some 4x4s as well. Would I get away with using 4x4 tyres without the "C" marker, or would that be an MoT phail?

I would imagine any key cutter type shop will be able to cut that type of key. If it has a chip in it, get two copies made and stick the original under the ignition cowling. Job jobbed.

I would think it was a fail. It's not the size that's the problem (if they're both the same) it's the fact van tyres have more ply (8 instead of 4, or something like that) to make them stronger. I'm not an MOT tester so don't take that as read, by the way.

*Edited for spelling.

Am I completely mad to be considering a '200 with a chipped L-series? Something tells me I should run a mile, but it's VERY tempting...
