Anyone got any experience with carb fed motors and vapour lock/heat soak?

Had any luck lagging the fuel pipes?

Do you have an insulator between the carb and inlet manifold?

No, good shout.  I remember now I tried to fit one when I put the new carb on but the mounting studs were too short - and I couldn't be arsed dealing with them at the time.

Also the penny has just dropped - I wired the electric auto choke into the ignition at a point past where the ballast resistor is - so it's not getting a full 12v and is therefore probably not working.

re lagging the fuel pipes...ye olde test is put some wooden clothes pegs on the line and see if it helps

Might be coming into a Golf mk5 2.0 tdi, it won’t start, not had a proper look at it yet. Before I brave eBay with the bits is there anything anyone is after? Wings are rusty before you ask. Obviously.

Can anyone recommend a decent car parts supplier near Chichester? We have a couple of motor factors but their prices are ridiculous. £3.99 for a 2W peanut bulb to go in the instrument panel? No thanks.

I don't mind driving a little way or even mail order.

Service time on the Corolla is due soon, need to give stepdaughter something to do soon. We'll try doing the cambelt as well; not been changed since 2012 and I've not done a twin cam engine before.....

If you can get it running you’ll be surprised what some mongs will pay for it

What year? The wings maybe covered by VW anti perforation warranty.

Why won't it start? Could be an easy fix. Or could be a broken cambelt...

No idea as of yet, still fucking about mending the driveshaft on the Mondeo. Managed to swap the joint out ok but the bottom swivel won’t fit back into the hub. Not sure where I’ve gone wrong there, I’m tired and it was going dark so I’ve fucked off indoors, have a look at it tomorrow with a fresh pair of eyes.

From looking at the Golf yesterday it looked quite tidy, the test has expired and from what I’ve been told by the folks whose drive it’s been left on it’s got ‘something up with it’. Whether that means it won’t start or whatever I don’t know. The owner just wants rid of it, not sure I can be arsed with flogging it on Bumtree, I can imagine I’d go mad with endless texts from the usual fare that drives 13 year old Golfs. Just a hunch here but seeing as it’s the 2.0 TDI it could be the cam is fucked if I’m on the right lines.

It could also be the oil pump that's fucked also.

Those don't suffer from oil pump failure in the same way or as often like the Passat did. That had a different engine setup on the oil pump to try and be more refined. However not as durable (by any stretch).

Can anyone correct me if I’m rong? If the driveshaft inner joint wasn’t engaged properly, it would be pissing gearbox oil out all over the drive? It feels as if it’s knocked in enough but the strut is too far out for the bottom ball joint to engage in the hole, it’s as if the strut is too far out?

Not sure if this is the right thread for this question but... I'm working in Swansea on 18/19 September and need somewhere to stay overnight.

Can any S Wales shiters recommend a hotel in or around Swansea with really secure parking? Hoping to take my prize K-series powered shite - the Caterham. So for obvious reasons I'm not too keen on leaving it in the near-by PCP :)

We stayed at the Radisson blu in Cardiff and that was as secure a car park as you'd need unfortunately some miles away from Swansea.

Sierraman re the driveshaft check the cv joints haven't pulled out of their sockets. Usually inner one comes out of it's socket inside the boot if you pull or move the driveshaft to vigorously. Hope you find it's a simple fix ????

But a great blat down the road in the car you're taking though!!! I had to do it many moons ago in a sodding forces LandRover - I'd go for your option every time.....

Sorted driveshaft, the inner tripod was ok, but pulled boot back and repacked it with grease anyhow. The problem was the wishbone, ended up undoing the rear most bolt, doing the ball joint pinch bolt up and then myself and my uncle pushing the wishbone back enough to twat the bolt for the back of the wishbone back through again.

Attempted to shift it off the drive, no drive and a big fucking rattle. The driveshaft seems to be properly located in the inner part of the joint. Bugger. Oh dear.

Really haven’t got the time at the moment to be arsed with it.

Right then - the Laguna has always had one good and one bad headlight, but after finally getting some rain in the last week, the bad one is looking decidedly misty. Is there anything I can do with it without having to take it out that'll help, if only to see how quickly it steams up again? Hairdryer, compressed air, silica sachet? Removing the headlight means removing the grille and the bumper and the washer reservoir and oh god why did I buy a modern Renault? Xenons, by the way.

(yes, it appears I also have a headlamp bulb out)

Posted

Christ what's happened to those lights over the last year. They never used to be missed up! Fingers crossed it's just the bulb and not the Xenon Ballast. If it is the ballast then Yate car breakers may still have that facelift Initalie there still.

I wonder if the bulb out is because water has got into the ballast. I believe the ballast lives on the bottom of the headlight unit and prone to getting water in.

I'd be tempted to take the light out to investigate. Then at least it can be put in an airing cupboard to dry out a bit.

Posted

Btw the bumper comes off pretty easily. I had it off a couple of times to fix and then later replace the headlight washer. Check my old thread on it, I think I detailed how I did it.

Not all the fixings are probably still in there either. :D

If it's like some of the Clio headlight then as mentioned above the ballast lives under the light. Because we are having such good weather I would take the covers off the back of the lights and let all the moisture dry out, then refit the covers making sure they fit properly and are not damaged. Nothing to lose.

Quick question, bought a complete new driveshaft now instead, I’ve got to say you were right I’m not fucking about swapping the CV joint on its own again, had a look it’s actually fell off, I’d hammered it home as far as it would go, looking at the circlip it’s actually not a great fit on the joint. I’ve no appetite to continue fucking about with it so a new shaft is winging its way here early next week. Anyway my question is, would I get away with just pulling the old shaft away at the tripod, leaving the cup still attached to the diff to save all the oil pissing out and swap that bit across? Access to pull at the actual cup end of the driveshaft is quite tricky as well.

Posted

On some cars you can leave the oil in the box and jack the side you are removing really high up. I remember this from college as the Nova I was led to for the remove/refit a starter motor lesson had been left in this state which made my life oh so easy.

I need the fuel cooler and tailgate lock actuator if you're breaking the golf.

Is this a thing?

Wife's is a 57 plate and the paint is falling off the wheel arches.

Yeah they have this stuff in the inner wings a bit like Oasis, water gets trapped in it then toys the wings out. They are rusty but the drivers side isn’t too bad it’s just a scab.

Waiting on the owner getting back to me on it, if I hear anything I’ll let you know. Failing that he has said if I want anything prior to it going to the breakers I could take it so even if I don’t have it I can take the bits you are after.
