If you phone them up and say you are willing to wait for an empty slot on a back load you might get it cheaper.

Sure, from a purely expenses-only point of view its likely cheaper to go and get it yourself....maybe....pez, tolls, ferry, hotel, food etc but once you factor in your own time, it starts to make a lot more sense to get it delivered. Plus, its someone else problem until it turns up, no fucking about on the hard shoulder of some autoroute with a flat trailer tyre or a boiled-over towcar.

P.s. I just sent an email on their website and they'll get back to me. Mainly as evidence.

We appreciate that you have taken the time to contact us in relation to this matter.?

Upon checking the record, I can confirm that the information that was provided to you previously was correct.

It seems we have received in an application to declare the vehicle as off road, however, this was not received from yourself.

I am sorry for any inconvenience.

As this is not available to do online, you can declare the vehicle off road by printing and posting a V890 form to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR.

Fuck knows why it has to be written.

This is the word on Merc CLK brake fluid for the poor soul who asked above and everyone ignored - you bunch of meanies :)

I also have a CLK related question: ABS/BAS llight has been off for a week or two but I washed te car yesterday and washed inside the arches. I now have the lights coming on intermittantly! So I am assuming I have TWO problems, one beigng fixed (brake light switch) but also something in a wheel arch and is water related. ABS sensor?

I have tried to find the thread about the new MOT rules and diesel emissions on here but to no avail.

The info on the 75/ZT owners club is confusing and a bit negative, they appear to be testing their diesel cars to limits in excess of the manufacturers spec which doesn't sound right. The MOT manual states that the new rules only apply to diesels fitted with a DPF which my 75 doesn't have.

Can anybody in the know confirm any of the above please?

Test to new limit - being over the manufacturers plate limit has been removed as a RFR according to a tester

Posted

How can they test my car, made in 2003, to limits that it was never designed to meet? That seems ludicrous.

Posted

The manufacturers plate limit was to be used where it was lower than the normal test limit, I'm pretty certain yours will just be tested to the normal limit same as it was last year. The majority of changes concerned DPF equipped cars etc.

Visa in Barcelona.

Having driven to Barcelona before now, there is a better way of doing this:

Get the Overnight Portsmouth to Ouistreham ferry. Leaves Portsmouth at 10pm or so, and gets in to Ouistreham for a bit past 6am, You'll be on the road for 6:30 am, and even taking a fairly leisurely drive (I did it in a Disco 2 with the cruise control set at about 65mph, and went the slower route through the pyrenees) You'll be in Barcelona for 8pm. Collect car, sleep, and then be on the road for 7am/8am the next morning. Be back in Ouistreham for 9pm to be on the overnight ferry back to Porsmouth. You'll be out of the UK for 2 days (3 nights).

It's a lot of driving. I remember the prat-nav saying "670 miles to destination" when I turned it on in Ouistreham that morning and thinking "ah bollocks, that's a long way" but if you take the toll roads, the journey across most of France is piss-easy compared to battling your way around the M42. I stopped just the twice for fluids in and out. The most useful thing that made the journey fly by was having a couple of audiobooks on cassette.

If you're serious about wanting to do this, and aren't planning on doing it instantly, I have a car-transporter-trailer in West Sussex you can borrow. It's a bit narrow, but a Visa would fit on it with miles to spare. I just need to get the Berlingo that's currently on it scrapped.

I asked about my 2007 Civic diesel at my local favourite garage and the new MOT requirements. His response is that it was too old for any of the new stricter limits. The limits it was being tested to are the same it had previously. Also, like the 75, the Civic never came out of the factory with a DPF.

However does it work then? The fact the seller hasn’t managed/worked out how to do it, despite specifically stating it won’t be possible to get it back on the road, is potentially diddling himself on a handsome mark up on price, hence my potential interest.

Just had a bike written off Cat B. In the new groups A is crush, B is scrappage only so not to be put back on the road.

Nothing’s changed, those have always been the guidelines. The only thing that changed recently was the introduction of S and N to replace C and D

Cat B CAN go back on the road BUT you need to get it out of the hands of a salvage dealer (difficult, they’re not supposed to sell Bs to the public) and no doubt navigate some paperwork drama.

A silly simple one:

If I’m selling a vehicle to a chap in the Czech Republic (he’s having it collected so I won’t meet him), do I fill out the exported section of the V5C and give him the new keeper bit?

Or do I just fill out his name as the new keeper and send it off? Only he couldn’t sign it could he?

The DVLA phone number is down..

Posted

I think in that situation you are supposed to notify DVLA by letter.  You can't use the export section of the V5C as that's only for if you're exporting the car yourself, and you can't put a Czech address on the main bit.  Plus he'll presumably need that bit to register the car in Czechoslovakia the Czech Republic

Recommendations sought chod fans.

Room at the Inn for a workhorse diesel commuting chod.

Economy and probable dependability are the name of the game. Budget of around £700. Really hoping for something that's been well looked after and quite easy to work on. It will do around 400 miles each week but will have Rover McRoverface for backup should it shit the bed.

The immediate car that springs to mind is the Peugeot 306 1.9 TD. I'm struggling to find many good ones though. I think they had the right balance of economy, complexity and shunt. So probably something in that mould. Wouldn't really be interested in anything that much larger than the 306, it's almost always just myself in the car.

Would consider something smaller and normally aspirated like a 106 but not sure if that would destroy my soul doing 450ish miles a week.

At the risk of upsetting everyone here, it has to be a MK4 TDI Golf. Preferably a VE if you can stomach the more expensive tax, but if not then the PD100's are ok provided the correct oil's been used.

50+ MPG, oodles of knowledge and cheap parts available and quite simple to maintain/mend if needed. That money will buy you a well looked after one with FSH etc if you look about.

Just make sure to find one that hasn't had the BarryBoy treatment.

VE/PD100 cars stand the best chance of having avoided the wheels/mapping/lowering/thrashing brigade.

I do like that engine, I had a Mk1 superb before, it was the worst car I've ever owned, but the engine was fantastic and economy great for a big auto barge.

I like the Bora of that generation too.

EDIT - To that end, what's the thoughts on the Seat Leon with the same engine?

So this failed again on the emissions. I haven't seen the print out but I am told there was "No improvement" after a splash of vpower, some cleaner and a thrashing - and the car went straight into the test on arrival.

So where should I look next? I'm told the car had a new full system 12 months ago, including cat, and the car isn't an oil drinker.

I did think maybe the lambda sensor didn't get plugged back in (or got hacksawed off) when the exhaust was changed, but other than that I have no idea.

Was planning to double check the lambda sensor is present, and check its values with my Delphi if it will recognise the car. Other than that I'm not sure what I should be looking at... suggestions please :)

ETA, I'm told it also got a new air filter pre-test and the plugs "looked fine"

From what I've heard aftermarket cats are good for one MOT only.

These are just catagories it all bollocks by the insurance industry, if you can get hold of one complete there is absolutely nothing stopping you applying for the logbook and putting a cat B car or bike on the road. In fact I've seen a bike put down as cat B due to deep scratches on the alloy frame / hence new frame required and uneconomic repair, or you could ignore them and ride it as it was

Due to the prices salvage bikes were making at the time virtually everything was being written off as they were making virtually book prices at auction..

He will need the full logbook to register it not just the export or new keeper section. Notify the DVLA by recorded letter and keep copies of the documents.

The Govt would seem to disagree!

Course it's bollox. Bike had a scrape on the frame but I'd have ridden it no probs. Trashed engine made it better for me to claim though.

Point I was making is getting a no frame/bodyshelk reuse Cat B back on the road would be a ballache. Unless other doc's were available like!

My VE 90 TDI Bora is in the cheap* tax band, it was registered just after the CO2 emissions based tax bands were introduced.

It's not very engaging to drive but it's not bad. My choice would be a Toledo with the 110 TDI engine, they're good lookers.

Have you thought of changing the injectors/nozzles for 110 ones? The size of the nozzles is the main difference between the 90 & 110 iirc.

You're right, it's just the injector nozzles and ECU map. I altered the map, it's probably equivalent to a 110 now, upgraded nozzles would allow for a bit more fuel and boost. You can use 140bhp Audi/Volvo 2.5 TDI nozzles as well.

Also worth checking the breather system and make sure no exhaust leaks

Here's the old official line when they actually used to publish information booklet INS160.

I'm sure in various revisions, they didn't used to bother with the Section 11 bit, then they did, then they didn't.

Main thing is to do the opposite of a domestic sale. Give them the docs (mainly for the front page with all the details).

I was just coming on to say that this is probably not a goer as a lot of peeps seem to think it's a 4 day job. I really don't think I will be able to get the time off work but this does make me think it might be a possibility. Still have to overcome the other problems but if more than one of us goes, with shared driving we could be onto a winner if we can do it in 3 as might be able to wangle that.

Ta for the offer of a trailer but being in Yorkshite we'd have to get it back to you afterwards so am probably better sourcing one up here.

As a sidenote, I never knew where Ouisterham was. It's twinned with Angmering in West Sussex where I grew up I remember the signs as you drove into the village. I just looked online though and see it's also twinned with 3 other places though, the slag.
