Mk2 Golf GTi - I had to get rid of mine when my first son was born as we were short of cash - the 1st Gulf War had just quadrupled the cost of oil for our central heating. I still tell him about this now - 27 years on - I think he's got a bit pissed off with it now though.

You might even be lucky enough to scoop one of the four 613s that were built in RHD to test the UK market. One came up on eBay several months ago; it reached about eleven grand.

It looked sort-of-alright in the photos, but hadn't been on the road for a while. It wasn't the same car that Chris Goffey drove for Top Gear.

 

Definitely a rarity, and not sure where you'd obtain parts for the RHD-specific areas.

Indeed. Not least the dashboard was completely different, not just a mirror of the LHD one.

 

Very late cars upped the engine from 3.5 to 4.4 litres and had a neat system where if you gave it full throttle it would cut power to other systems, mainly the massive cooling fans (air cooled), for twenty seconds to give you an extra 20bhp for overtaking. 0-60 was around 7.5 seconds which was as good as its contemporaries (if it really had any).

A Sunbeam Talbot convertible with appropriate female adornment sat in it, in imitation of Grace Kelly.

Yesterday, I sat in a 1963 Lancia Flavia Pininfarina coupe at a local classic car specialists, while I went to look at something else. It has immeditely rocketed to the top of my wish list.  It is one of the most beautiful and well-integrated styles ever, the design and engineering of every detail is sublime, except possibly for the gearchange, which is a bit like stirring a Christmas pudding. That wouldn't put me off, however. Best of all it is for sale at a very attainable (if not for me ) £23k:

I really want a Citroen Ami 6 or a GSA. The main issue with the Ami idea is that it'd be like owning the 2CV, but with poorer engine access (albeit some jobs can be done without having to take the wings off). Still, there would be a real difficulty with knowing what to take to 2CV events.

 

So, maybe 2019 needs to be the year of the GSA, ahead of the GS anniversary in 2020...
