What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

It carries a Chassis Developments bodyplate dated September '89 but I suspect the chassis is older still - it's the only 4spd Mk3 I've encountered; it was registered and supplied new by Blythswood Motors in Glasgow where I used to work and the lassies in the office remembered it sitting in the showroom in the early '90s. I'll check the V5 but IIRC we're only the third registered keeper. I do know the 42k miles are genuine though so it's never been hard worked.

I've seen the Gibson coaches around, but I've never seen that one.

As a wild guess, maybe it was originally used for on-site transport somewhere (admittedly on a pretty big site) - it would explain the low miles, and the extra gear/PAS wouldn't have been missed. Either a forces base, or more likely, a big industrial complex like a steelworks or docks?

The turbo/exhaust manifold I'm having made in Malaysia for the Storia is ready to be shipped, yay!

I suppose I'd better get the rest of the parts for the work sorted out.

The Nip passed it's MOT today! :)

Failed previously on emissions. Idling and running badly. Kept cutting out as well. Changed every sensor - took it back, still over. Had a proper look, found a 'kink' in the vacuum pipe to the MAP sensor, unkinked it, took it back again - emissions was OK! :)

Just signed up to do my first triathalon in March. Not the full turbo version more a 1.1L version but still... scary but makes me smile.

Good on you, have had it in mind to do one myself but swimming is not something I'm good at so need to improve that this year. Good luck!

I have access to a boat, a motorbike and a Segway, if that would help?

Little one only needs 8 lengths so not that hard. In theory next year I will try an olympic one. Gulp. I might need that segway on charge!

If I could do 8 lengths I'd be very happy!  Self-taught with a terrible technique which I'm finding hard to shake off now, luckily I have a swimming teacher friend who's intent on sorting it.

I'm curious, what're the run/ride distances on your first one? Do you have a proper road/race bike?  I've fancied one for a while, a tri would be a good excuse to try one.  Top respect for aiming to do the Olympic-standard one too.

Ace! We should do an Autoshite triathlon.

My target this year is sprint tri. That is 750m motorboats. 20k bike then 5k segway (DOHC). Can just about do all that but struggle with it together without medical assistance!

So I am training for that but have signed up to super sprint which is 200m motorboat 10k bike and 2.6k segway (SOHC version).

Olympic is 1k motorboat 40k bike then 10k segway (Turbo)

If you don't fancy swiming there are duathlons which do just Segway and moto

My aim is to do the coast-to-coast (Morecambe to Bridlington) in 3 days on a bike. Trying to sort something out with a gang from work where someone goes ahead and sets up camp and we ride to each overnight stop. It's not actually too bad, something like 71 miles per day, but I need to get fit again.

That sounds like a nice ride Cav. I'd like to do something similar but living too far south it'd be Lowestoft to Fishguard which is about twice as far. I used to do a 50 mile annual charity ride when I was a fat teenager which wasn't too bad, I'd finish ahead of some of the guys with all the flash Lycra in my jeans and knackered trainers.

A lot of the 'flash' gang don't like it when you're on their back wheel on an old or unfashionable bike. I followed a bloke the other day on a very nice road bike and he kept trying to go faster, despite obviously being knackered, as I was on a mountain bike and I don't think it's the done thing to be overtaken. I've had a few in the past who've mysteriously* suddenly decided to stop and check their phone.

Back in my youth I used to run my MTB with a 52-11 top gear - half the local roadies physically couldn't keep up, however fit they were :-D

I bought a road bike (well a cyclocross bike, the roads in Leeds are frigging awful) the other day. Was going up a hill and seared past some guy who was probably in his 60's with a full pannier on the back of the commuter bike he was on.

I have not ridden a road bike at any speed or distance for donkeys years and then headed down the hill on the other side. Quite frankly I was well out of my depth pretty quickly. It was like driving a lorry with a shirt button for the steering wheel, I had little or no control. I could hear this old guy peddling behind me but I did not have the nerve to push harder and keep ahead of him and had to relent and he sailed past me into the distance.

If I was on my mountain bike I would have been miles ahead of him. Sure it will all come to me in time.
