What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I remember at an old job a middle class couple had called one of their out of control, spoilt, 'free spirit' children Ajax. Which is a scouring powder. Dicks.

Ajax was also one of the Greek heroes of the Trojan war, which iirc pre-dates the scouring powder

It's still a fucking silly name for a suburban brat though.

They could just be big fans of Dutch football. Ancient Greek names are a stupid thing to bestow on a child, such as.........oh wait, my name is Greek. Shit.

Hey Phil, I didn't know you had a Demio! Good man, they're ace!

How's the papier-mache holding up on the 106?

The Demio is now my little brothers, so he can blat around likes its 1998 and hes playing Gran Turismo. It keeps relentlessly passing MOTs and is a very useful little load lugger, having had all manner of engine cranes, engines and such moved about in it.

The Paper wrapped Peugeot is now almost done, today I did a little more work on it, covering the bumpers in paper and fitting some different wheel trims. These particular trims were from a Wartburg 353 and rather jolly it up I think.

Have a earlier picture with the bumpers papered and awaiting the trim to be put back on:

And a slightly later shot with the front plate and black trim back on the bumper and the door handles painted with black Hammerite.

A couple more coats of varnish tomorrow on both bumpers and it'll hopefully be as water proof as the rest of it. I have only had to do one repair, to the boot lid, where water got under the varnish after it rained during the night. I would say that is pretty good going.

I am now quite tempted to maybe make it a tad lower. The ride is very rolly polly and yet also a little jiggly, so I can't see how this will cause any problems, despite not being very autoshite.

How is your other paper wrapped mode of transport?

I have thought long and hard about that question and finally have to concede that I have not the slightest idea what you are on about.

I assume he means the White Hen, seeing as that was mainly constructed out of newspaper from the factory?

Anyway, this makes me grin. Not the getting a shout out on radio 6 bit, but the subject of said shout out. HUZZAH

That's because I have the wrong Phil

Huzzah indeed - congratulations! (did he say 'age: far too old'?)

:D That's happened before on this forum, someone spotted a rather tasty yellow Toyota Cressida for sale that I'd apparently owned. I wish. Also, I only have one car and I'm not wrapping it in newspaper. Mind you, that 106 looks not half bad, nice to see something a bit different.

My grin today is the answer to Cav's question.

Thanks fella, it's superb! Tightened the front wheel bearing, pumped up the tyres, took off that hideous mudguard and it's ready to take me to work tomorrow. It's so light, can't believe it could weight so little. Seems to need absolutely nothing else doing to it right now, although it'll get my decent road tyres when I can be bothered to swap them over.

Also, a good secondhand CG125 frame I found on ebay turned up at the same time, Saturday is rebuild day. Whoop.

Who calls their kid Lucas?

My nephew is called Lucas. My brother didn't realise why I found it amusing until I pointed out the obvious. I've considered buying a Lucas item for every birthday and become That Relative. I'm already referred to as Uncle Weirdo, a moniker I'm happy to adopt.

For extra Cool* Points, insist on addressing him as "Sparky" at all times. For the rest of his life.

You never know, he might become a goth, then you could call him the Prince of Darkness.

I would think that "Shorty" would be more appropriate...........

Autela sounds like an exotic girls' name.

Blimey, are they still even in business?!

Lately he's been making noises that Danny Filth would be proud of. I think it's far more likely, however, that we'll find him smoking and not working when he should be, especially as he gets older. He'll probably have a problem with the earth too.

Talking of car related names, I know of an Aurelia and a Flavia, and all the hours I have spent in cars, the more recent ones gave me an idea for a "stealth" name for a girl...... Could anyone imagine the name Gabria? Yup, it's AIRBAG backwards. Obviously nobody has to like wot I rote, but I'm glad I got it off my chest.

Edit to add, how many people do you hear calling their girls "Princess"?

Posted

^that's clever that is. If anyone has a boy and a girl that need naming, might I suggest Gaz and Chaika respectively?

Papier-mache 106 news

Thanks for the update; it's looking way better than it has a right to. I'm seriously considering something similar, though a bit more subtle.
