What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

About 5 weeks ago, a friend who is in his late 60s visited me on his return from visiting his children who both live in Australia. Turned out he had contracted Meningitus (SP?) whilst over there and been given a 5% chance of survival! Obviously he survived, but was 100% stone deaf! He could talk but my half of the conversation had to be written down, slow and frustrating.

Why is this a grin? He has had 2 cochlear implants, has bits held onto his skull with magnets, has 2 devices that look like hearing aids that have to be recharged everynight, all of which means he can hear again almost as good as before! It will take a couple of years to optimise the settings but as he said, he will happily settle for what he has.

Suffice to say, I was stunned by the transformation! Anyone who questions medical progress.... All on the fantastic NHS we have.

I'm very much in danger of sounding like a proper VAG fanboi right now...

I was offered those a few years ago. as I remember they drilled your skull and screwed/bolted a press stud to your head somewhere above your ear. you clipped a receiver to the stud and the bone transmits the sound.

I did a bit of research and they have to be kept very clean.

There are some interesting photos of infection on t'internet as always.

As I'm a wimp regarding Hospitals, spend most of my life down a pit or rolling in mud, and have been quite deaf most of my life, I declined.

I'm very deaf now, and should have gone for it, but too late to worry now.

Noticed in the insurance renewal (after paying for it) that I've only held my licence for one year.

I feel fifteen years younger now.

Aviva are at least refunding £60.

so a few days ago late at night I was checking up on my favourite ebay sellers (you can see where this is going :) )

when I noticed one had an Xserve3,1 for only £60 Buy it now, surely something must of been wrong with it? nope, description says its fine

so I click buy it now because £60 is a bloody good deal for an Xserve3,1 and i have been wanting one, not only that its the more desirable Dual Processor model :)

(money is super tight here so i dont actively look for things to buy on ebay atm but i do keep an eye on some favourite sellers for a bit dangerous "window shopping")

so the Xserve showed up today and much to my plesent surprise not only is it fully functional it also has 24GB of RAM! the listing said it "only" had 12GB of RAM

ready to rack n roll  the Xserve is a type of Rack mount Computer server that was made by apple until 2011 with the Xserve3,1 being the last.

Hoo St Werburgh. On way back go via Cooling and give Jools Holland a wave/finger as you see appropriate.

I went back to the breakers yard today, they had started crushing all of the cars in the back field but I managed to negotiate a save of the blue Fiesta that I need the interior from (see grumpy thread)

So here she is, will be moved to more level ground soon so I can start work on it. Won’t be until next year now. The crusher is to the left of the picture.

Also, my daughter lost her first tooth today so a very proud daddy moment indeed. It’s just a shame she’s off school with a cold-y flu-y thing.

GR9 to return after a break and find that this place is still the same anachronistic haven of glorious misery and frustrated brilliance.

Felt a bit like the parent of the playground bully when I came out the Aldi tonight to see this beautiful, bit diminutive, little Figaro.

Never seen a green one before and it is a case major lust.

The driver pulled forward from the parking bay not realising there was a drop and just sat there balanced with his back wheels spinning.

Those of you lucky* enough to remember the Datsuncog epic Rennersaga from earlier in the year (quick summary for those not listening at the back: two Phase 1 Lagunas go terminally tits-up in the space of a month) may not be aware of the other slight ball-ache that resulted from that particular sorry tale - a long pair of ladders belonging to DC Senior were now trapped in Carrick.

I'd borrowed these ladders to clear the guttering over Easter, only for TAZ to blow its engine on Easter Monday. The official Renault Accessory roof bars I'd used to bring the ladders up to the house won't fit anything other than a Laguna 1, and especially not the stupid 'solid' roof rails on the Lags' replacement, the Subaru Forester.

In fact, although I have THREE sets of roof bars, none of the bastards fit the Forester (I also have some bars to fit cars with rain gutters, last used on the non-MrsDC-approved Polo breadvan; plus a set of bars for 'open' roof rails, last put to use on the extravagantly bodged XM estate) - and since my folks' cars don't have roof bars (Fiat 500 and BMW Z3 floppytop) it seemed the ladders were perpetually stranded in Co. Antrim.

I couldn't find a set of bars for less than about £170 for the Subaru, and even a set for the Yaris would set me back about £150; it would have been cheaper to just buy a new set of ladders and call it quits. Except I couldn't afford to replace my oul' da's ladders either, and noises were being made about the need to get bargeboards painted before winter etc...

Anyroad, having continued to fruitlessly trawl Ebay and Gumtree for Forester bars, last Friday I happened across an Ebay listing for a set of very inexpensive new ones, listed as fitting a 2003 Forester. Basic looking, but only £47.99 - and claiming free UK postage, too.

I was initially somewhat sceptical - if you want to hear an impassioned and unhinged rant, ask me my opinions on 'free UK postage' that only covers England, Wales and the bit of Scotland south of Dunfermline (THAT'S NOT THE FUCKING UK, THAT'S NOT EVEN ALL OF GB), most recently encountered when a set of whisky tumblers offered with 'free UK postage' turned out to have a £30 'postage surcharge' levied to send to Northern Ireland - but I was pleasantly surprised that this particular retail enterprise - Yogi24 Ltd - was based in Belfast. Free postage did indeed apply.

I cashed in various Nectar points and drew down my remaining PayPal balance from vinyl/diecast sales at the checkout, which meant that I only needed to stump up £18 in actual cash monies. And hit 'Buy'. That was at about 3pm on Friday; I hoped that they might arrive sometime before next weekend.

At one o'clock on Saturday, a text came through from Yodel to say that my Ebay vendor item had been delivered and left with  a neighbour.

Sure enough, there were the bars already. While not quite Thule Aero quality, they fit the car and seem pretty damn sturdy.

A set of Forester roof bars for £18, delivered to my door with no fuss or hassle in 22 hours.

Grin? I think my jaw might fall off.

(Which hopefully the ladders won't when I repatriate them on Thursday.)
