What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I may be* repeating myself, but old Top Gear. Brilliant.

(I have tried to embed this, but I'm too pissed to work out why it isn't working)

The blueprint for every 'Mike Brewer buys a car' montage. New Top Gear have also borrowed the 'irate viewer writes in to complain about their focusing on expensive cars' bit too.

Quentin Wilson has defined modern television motoring journalism. A receding hairlined, vampire-looking (alleged) used car clocking knobber of the highest order.

Still, at least he's not getting royalties for it.

Missis went out on the lash last night so I made the most of the time usually wasted waiting up .

I plotted a trail riding route in memory map for next weekend .

117 miles and two fuel stops - it's gonna be a beaut .

The guy who told me where the lanes were said they were bloody tough so it's gonna be a great day in north Devon !

Spotted this old garage sign in Barcelona yesterday. Apologies for the lousy photo, but the right hand side of the sign boasts of their specialism in Renault 4 CV & Dauphine.

A couple of grins for me today:

Firstly Sealtainn winning a roffle when he's many miles and a ferry from the car.

A minor grin, I've been away for a week and have just caught up with the tat thread, there's so much wonderful chod available. I have limited funds at present and no space, so only made an offer on one vehicle in the thread, fingers crossed the seller doesn't accept the offer.

This weekend's plan was to finish taking down the wall at the front of our bungalow I have been putting this job off as it took 3 fit landscapers a week to do 2/3rds of it anyway it only took me a day to finish it.... why is this a grin because we are just leaving to go to Beaulieu to the auto jumble yay

A friend that lives in Spain for most of the year asked me to find him a Discovery that can live at his house in England to be used for general load lugging/maintenance duties when he's here. I found this one quite locally last week, very low mileage, pretty good nick and after some haggling, the price was right.

The only major issue it had was that the turbo didn't seem to be working properly but I thought what the hell, worse case I've got a spare turbo in the shed I could stick on it.

Well, after having a poke around this morning I found that the turbo actuator arm wasn't attached and it felt as though the diaphragm had seized (I guess from lack of use), an hour or so of blasting an airline down it and a load of wiggling it about the diaphragm freed up and it now functions perfectly.

The Disco feels like a different animal with a functioning turbo. I love a free fix.

On the way home I spotted an old and patina covered Renner with weird headlight surrounds and a very sloped rear screen. Gave the bloke driving it a big thumbs up. Then an R reg 1200 Bandit in minty condition, had a quick chat with the rider whilst sat at the traffic lights. Lovely bike :)

I am a firm believer in karma and everything happens for a reason. I was in the right place at the right time for someone today, Earlier a mate messaged me saying he had a guy coming to pick up some wheels but he's on his way back from an autotest so pop up and have a look at his car when he gets there as he is towing it back home, I popped up, me and my mate had a chat then he turned up, it was a corsa b 1600 sport, my mate lives in a tight cul-de-sac so instead of him struggling we took the trailer from the back of his car and as we were just about going to turn it there was a god awful bang and the trailer dropped, the weld that runs at the bottom of the hub mounting plate failed causing the wheel to have extreme negative camber and was jammed against the trailer chassis, it was a home made trailer he had bought from someone and the weld that failed resembled coco pops and hadn't penetrated properly, this poor lad and his mrs were on their way home to Abergele so I rushed to mine to get changed and pick up my welder and some tools and set about repairing it and get them on their way, ground everything back, the hub needed some gentle persuasion with a big bar to get the surfaces to butt up for welding but we got there

We popped his car and my saph in a neighbouring driveway

Welded the trailer at the side of the road

I've not long had a message from my mate they have let him know they have got back safe and sound, I'm chuffed I was able to help them out

I sometimes get tips for my work if  customer is really happy with what I've produced.  It always gives me the warm fuzzies when I get a tip and very occasionally it's something a bit different.  Today, a tip arrived from shiter Hertz for the big A3 montage I did for him and it's just brilliant and perfectly timed because I've been feeling a bit grouchy about not making better progress on the Renault the last couple of weeks.

I'd not been able to find a 6 toy I liked to date, but this one I really do.  It's made by Guisyal, a diecast manufacturer I hadn't heard of, and is really quite nice quality.  Not a bad size for a keyring either and with it being a forward opening bonnet, all the opening panels stay shut when it's hanging from the ignition, which is a nice touch.  Lovely stuff :D  Cheers again, Hertz!

Had a fairly dismal Friday night at Kinky Girl's. As it was almost her birthday, what would you like to do love? Obtain a dvd of 'creed', and dominos.

Film was at best meh!, and dominos was late / cold.

Why the grin thread? Complained on dominos site & got a refund. Sold the ultraviolet code for £3, and cex'd the disc for £6. So a dismal night in only cost a quid in total.

My friend Betty came round today. Not seen her in ages (since her dog died ) and she is not in the best of health herself as she is 83 and breathless - open heart surgery soon. She is a cracking old lass: posh without being prissy and a lovely gentle lady. I think the world of her. Also, I am after her car!

It is an 'S' reg Fiesta Ghia she has had from new, pretty scuffed around the passenger side wing and the bumpers are, er, scraped somewhat but it is in lovely condition and only just done 30.000 miles! I told her to hurry up and snuff it and leave the car to me!

Then I wonder why I don't keep many friends.... :)

Second attempt by the garage at cleaning up the carb on the little Datsun 1200 seems to have been successful (fingers crossed). It's now the cheeky thing to drive I knew it should be.

Not saying it'll be the choice of transport for holidays in France or anything, and it's still something of a roadblock on fast A-roads, but it will be good fun for nipping around the countryside.

She didn't park it anywhere near the Mazda by any chance.......

Had a week off work and managed to get a fair bit done around the place

Trying and failing to get some sort of order in the garage and shed,

Went back into work today and found out my welding department is getting a 10% payrise,as of today !

It appears that having 1 agency lad walk out after 4 hours, and 1 of the other permanent staff threaten to leave has forced management to reconsider their decision not to award any payrises this year.....

Wait a second, you can but Tomoseseses brand new???

You can, but they're properly expensive for what they are. As nice as they look, you'd have to really want a stone-age eastern European 2-stroke pedal'n'pop - that's all but useless in modern traffic - to pay £1100+ for one.

Bought a decrepit 1963 NSU Quickly about 18 months ago with the intention* of doing it up and selling it. Did sod all to it and just put in the shed. As the sun is shining today and the mojo kicked in I dragged it out to have a look.

It is, er, patinated in the extreme. Surface rust on everything that was once chromed and furry alloy bits. Seat in tatters, tyres perished and falling apart, spokes so rusted they look like thin wires. You get the picture...

However the engine turned over by hand so what the heck. Disconnected the fuel pipe from the tank, (petrol tap seized) tipped some 25:1 petroil down the fuel pipe until it was full and tentatively pushed down on a pedal.

It fired, once. Encouraged I pedalled again and it only started and ran perfectly!

Lovely blue haze and the old familiar smell of two stroke fumes!

Am encouraged. AFAIK the thing hasn't been run or ridden in the last thirty years.

I am writing this from the rooftop of my parents villa in the south of Italy. The weather is great, as is the food, but being a non-touristy, dry, agricultural kind of area the place is choca with old chod. Pictures to follow when I can be ared to get off the sun lounger and take the camera out.

Just helped a neighbor (the same bloke who's golf I serviced) replace a small split coolant hose under the thermostat of his astra Van. Was quite fun, he bought beer, and we tinkered in the sun for an hour, and he gave me twenty quid.

Was quite a big split in a small hose though, no wonder he said it took 9 litres to limp back home 4 miles...

Let me guess - a 1.7 diesel Astra ?

The small pipes on those split for a past time

Posted

Yes, 1.7! I'm glad you said that, had half a thought the stat could be stuck closed and pressurising.

We reassembled it with all the clips facing the right way too so if there's a next time it will save 20 mins
