So the drivers seat in the ST is now officially knackered. Frame was broken on one side but now it's gone on both.

Don't know of its best to try fix it and risk breaking the airbag or just get another but they're expensive

Posted

Yay the Seat got a fresh MOT on Tuesday, needed wipers, a seat belt dash light resetting and the exhaust doing.

But....the new exhaust knocks on cold start up and then a slight rattle until warm, [about 2 mins] it's going back next week to be looked at, but feel this will prob need to go back for a while so it can cool down to check properly.

just a faff I could do without.

The outcome of a silly wildcard bid will be resolved tomorrow. I am so dead.

Yes, but your memory will be honoured...

I have a spare battery clamp somewhere, but the washer nips it up quite well so I may just leave it

Had a fun blast over the moor to drop the 155 off this morning to have its various belts, tensioner and variator ( variable timing thingy) changed. About time as the last one was done in 2006 when the previous belt snapped, lunching various bits of engine, from the look of th chunky bill in the history. As Alfa recommend a 3 yr interval I reconned it was pushing its timing belt roulette luck.

Was given a suitably Italian courtesy car back which was equally fun on the drive back...

I lied, it's shit, the terminal is very loose. Will fix that at some point, probably when it has an ftp over it

Headlight bulb on the X-Trail went pop,so a pair of  Osram night breaker unlimited ordered.

A quick look at the manual.

Remove electric connector.

Remove rubber cover plate

upclip bulb retainer, remove bulb,re-assemble in reverse.

OK

Now if it had said to remove electric connector pull like fuck whilst jiggling up/down and side to side (the plug not me),remembering to stop pulling before hand smacks of expansion bottle.

To remove rubber coverplate, pull the little tab that you can just get hold of due to it being so small. And pull like fuck till it gives in and comes off, smacking hand off expansion bottle again.

Unclip fucking pointy bulb retainer and do not place in very soft part of right hand.ouch. Remove old knacked bulb and replace with nice shinny new bulb. Re-assemble in reverse.

Just had a call from my friend with a w126 300 se. It is cutting out when the lights are turned on. Runs and starts perfectly otherwise. He has also noticed that the "bulb out" light is lit despite all bulbs being ok. This sounds like a faulty light switch to me drawing too much current and stopping the ignition- am I on the right lines?

Now, it so happens that he thinks this too, and actually bought a new light switch from Mercedes this week but can't work out how to get the old one out. I think I know how ( pull off dial, remove 13mm nut and lever off facia panel). But all words of help gratefully received. I am going to look tomorrow.

Had a minor FTP today. Rover seemed to be getting worse today with more usage. Managed to make it to Wolverhampton just as the autobox seemed to not be all well.

On the way back I was turning right at a juntion to go up a hill, as I entered the hill from the main road, the car just gave up and switched itself off, so I stuck the hazards on and pulled to the side of the road with the last bit of momentum it had, stuck it in park and switched it on again, it started straight away and pulled away like a good 'un but much to the chargrin of the people who were trying to pass my forlorn car.

It made it home and parked up in its usual place. I think the next place it'll be heading to will be to storage.

I saw Dickys Maestro today and it reminded me of a daytime programme from the late 80s with a red Maestro driving along in the opening credits then it pulls up outside a big house.

More tedious Saab news:

You may remember I have a leaky sunroof. Since I can't be arsed to fix it properly, inevitably I've had to reach for the gaffer tape. Because TURBO I've used motorsports-approved Duck tape, but now regret it 'cause it looks shit. Keeps the water out though, so it's staying for now.

Having put my fist through the sill last month I figured I'd better find someone to weld it up. Googled 'Coventry welder' and the first result was a bloke just around the corner who had a good review on his Faceache page from a fella pleased with some work on his mkII Jag, which is good enough for me.

A ton plus vat for his trouble. Don't know if that's valu or not to be honest?

Also bought a replacement rear seatbelt as I was worried it might be a problem come mot time as the buckle is a bit broken. The EBay seller was super quick despatching it, but on arriving the belt was retracted all the way - as you'd expect - but wouldn't pull out. I prised the cover to have a look at the mechanism and was able to free it off pretty easily. But then I became weirdly intrigued by it in as much as I could see how it works, but couldn't figure out WHY! It involves a little turned brass nugget that sort of wobbles about, knocking a tiny plastic flap which in turn jams the mechanism and stops the moving belt dead. But it only does so when the belt is tugged sharply. WHY? How does it know?

Anyway, this distraction meant I ran out of time to swap the belt before taking the car for the mot. Which it PASSED! Woot! (Although I have spent twenty quid on a part I don't strictly need; I'll still swap 'em over at some point though.)

Still, first time mot pass: Result!

Driving to work this morning, snow happened, roads are slippery. I'm doing about 35-40mph and crest a hill, there's a bloke at bottom of the hill at a T-junction wearing a high viz coat and waving a torch around. I give the brake pedal the smallest amount of pressure possible and lock all four wheels, attempt cadence and fail. Now shitting myself I ram the car into 2nd gear and ease up on the clutch allowing some engine braking, glad I'm not in the Triumph 'cause that would have meant certain death.

No way of stopping at the junction so I hope that the road is deserted as it's 7am on Saturday in the middle of nowhere and high viz man has warned oncoming traffic, my new goal is to not hit the car that's already in the ditch across from the junction. A combination of sheer driving skill* and my Honda's natural JDM drifting prowess* means I both clear the smashed car AND don't crash myself.

I flick the hazards on and make sure high viz man is alight, he's phoned for help and was waving the torch to try and warn me. In his misfortune he's saved me crashing my only functioning car, the man is a hero. I notice the crashed car is sideways having gone over the edge of the road and destroyed a fence. Its a pre-facelift silver Vectra C. All I know is that this ISN'T Bub, but it is Bub's Scottish high-viz wearing cousin.

Done a bit of car shuffling and now have the Oldsmobile in the garage. Preliminary pokage has determined that the rear composite transverse leaf spring, ( bit of a mouthful, but hey, it is what it is) has broken due to neglect. Am not surprised. The rubber isolator pads that protect the spring have long since gone leaving the spring unprotected.... It broke.

Anyhow. Work has started on the Olds girl. (See what I did?)

Work is likely to be slow. Should I start a thread and keep bumping it or just put up random posts in 'News 24'

That welding does not look that convincing.............

I suspect my friend may have bought a Suzuki Alto 1.1 auto as a runabout.

I'm going to head over there after I've had lunch, and will update later.

Oh yes, I did the front left CV joint on the snotmobile yesterday. Took me and my dad 3 hours, but half of that was pissing about looking for tools, fabricating tools, looking at the land rover project, and drinking coffee.

Besides taking the wheel off, we only undid one nut and one bolt!

No, I'm not hugely impressed, but he has cut out the rot rather than just chucking a patch over the top, he's made an effort to match up the lines and angles, it's solid and a sight better than some of the previous welding that's been done in that area.

It's tough to know how to strike a balance between a full on resto-quality repair that could cost a bomb and spiral out of control and the bare minimum to get past the mot tester. I feel if a job's worth doing you ought to do it properly, but equally, I ain't going to spend a fortune on a five hundred quid car.

Ideally I'd learn the skill and do it myself but time and space preclude that for the foreseeable future.

Start it's own thread! I'd certainly be interested in it anyway, and there's plenty of other yank botherers here that (probably) would too.

The more yank threads the better. And plenty of pics of the Olds, and Merc is a must!

Not sure I can follow that post with anything remotely as interesting.

But, got my friends Mercedes 300se going properly again. Light switch I had out and in my hand in 10mins before he said he'd actually only bought the plastic dial bit. Put it all back and fitted the new part anyway. Found a 5w taillight bulb fitted instead of a 10w which is what was throwing up the light Bulb fail lamp. Battery ok at 12.6 at rest and charging at 13.7 on tick over. Then turned out he hadn't changed the distributor for 15,000 miles- centre electrode rather worn and visibly sooty.

Swapped that and all now seems well again. All ready so he can take his Swedish girlfriend back to Heathrow this afternoon. She helped change the distributor etc, so seems like a keeper!

New set of pencil coils have gone into the Renner, hopefully curing the misfire. New rear engine mount fitted too, replacing the completely broken item that allowed the bottom of the engine to waggle about by a couple of inches fore and aft.

And seeing as the anti roll bar bushes have worn themselves grooves in the bar, some less than carefully applied insulation tape is an experiment against the woeful knocking that emanates from the rear, while the local Renner dealer/dodgy online parts shop take 5 days to get new bushes for me.

Rain stopped play so the brake pads will have to wait, but at least it got some soapy water thrown at it while it was already wet.
