And later a tip run where it was eyed up suspiciously by staff. Vans are allowed up to 3.5t GVW- I think they just didnt like the look of it!

Your lucky, I lent my C15D to a friend for a tip run and he was turned back because he did not have a pre ordered chit to say he was just a house holder. We moved his rubbish to my Mercedes estate added some of mine rubbish and there was no problem!

Here in Buckingham we are so posh even the rubbish has to go to the tip in a Mercedes!

I always say my wife has excellent taste as she chose me.

Yes but she has an opinion as to what we should have!

I always say my wife has excellent taste as she chose me.

You have worried me now, I don't always agree with Mrs Cyl choices in cars!

I had to help a friends dad out with the XM when his vivaro was turned away from the tip once. Commercial waste didnt have an eyelid batted to it when it came out of a car, out of a van with an expired permit though, he may as well have raped the tip persons wife...

Speaking of Fords, I crossed one in the Range Rover

Lovely.  Is that the Tarr Steps?  Haven't been there in yonks.  Need to drag the wife and dog back to my old Devon haunts some time now the (other) tourists have mostly gone.

Four hours to get through the eurotunnel last night. No help apologies or accurate information from the staff. The matrix signs kept saying 30 min delay due to a technical issue, after not moving an inch through the check-in terminals for three hours this was getting silly. I was booked on the 21.20, turned up early enough to be on the 20.20 normally and was on the 00.20. On the plus side the merc doesn't half shift when you put your foot down- even fully loaded it was the fastest thing on the m20. Got in 1.30 this morning.

Only interesting car was a lotus lean ( square one) alongside.

That's worrying given my in-laws are due to use the Chunnel this weekend. They're already fretting because a friend of their's had a massive delay of similar length the other week. Happily, we're using Dieppe-Newhaven.

Moog , are you sure it's the inner joint ? They used to break the driveshafts under the rubber damper bit . They rust under them until they reduce in size enough to break

Nope.

I have ordered a new full driveshaft and will swap the lot. It is drivers side if that makes a difference.

If it has gone one side is it likely to go the other? Missus Moog was stressing as to whether to change both.

I know Land Rovers 'mark their territory', but the puddle of oil under my Discovery had got to the state where I was fearful of a US invasion.

The problem was traced to the vacuum pump - the rivets that hold it together had apparently worked loose and it was pissing out oil. Fucksticks!

New OEM pumps are about £110, and even crappy Britpart ones are £60, so I drilled out the rivets, cleaned up the rubber seal & mating surfaces, applied a bead of silicone sealant & replaced the rivets with M5 bolts.

Finished product:

Re-fitted it & tested it - brake servo works fine, no leaks :-)

I dont know about length. All matching tyres.

Twosmoke is spot on the shaft has snapped under the doughnut.

I just change this one and see how it goes.

I got out of the habit of using the handbrake when I had a CX Familiale and then another. Every time they went in for a dealer service they told me they needed new handbrake pads. I was able to say NO THEY DONT, I NEVER USE THE HANDBRAKE so that all the other customers in the service department reception could hear me.

This just reminded me of something - when I took my CX22 TRS to a recommended garage for an MOT - one that still used a pit instead of a lift, and yes, of course there were tales of the apprentice bringing in a Reliant Robin... anyway, they did all the tests, then it was time for the handbrake test.

On the rollers, back wheels.

*say nothing*

Brake lights come on, car passes.

Chap was in the habit of 'helping' handbrakes, I think.

The Astra is doing sterling duty as a tip car/workhorse. With the back filled with hedge and rubble and scrap wood on the roof rack I can't think of another car that would do the job better for the same cheap price. Even gets 43mpg with short stop start journeys. My reasoning/man maths is that the car has cost me a couple of skips full of waste and will take far more than that throughout the next 12 months. Also helps to have a back up car in case my Alfa decides to become all Italian on me.

I have just deleted some emails from my inbox.

6661 to be exact going back to 2010.

No wonder it was a bit slow.

@ Stripped Fred: i had a Mk2 1300 Merit estate which I used in preference to hiring skips. While shifting bags of hardcore / soil, all bagged, I realised it could hold more than it could carry if you get my drift. Rear springs on bump stops, and suspiciously light front end, with a easy wheel-spinning manner.

I reckon it saved me 8 or 9 big skips, which pretty much paid for the car.

If that's not man-maths i don't know what is.

I've just ordered some replacement red 12mm bumper trim for the bumpers of my saph, £25 for 6m of it delivered, well chuffed with that considering it's the only place I found that did it in a colour instead of Chrome

If it's of any use to anyone, this is the place

Camry was leaking in the boot. A highly forensic investigation revealed that the air vent thingy had a mounting clip broken, so was letting in the outside.

This was hidden behind the bumper, so lights out and bumper off. 8 bolts and 7 spring clips and it was off. Gloriously easy.

Although I hate trim / spring clips. Work ok when new, don't age well.

Flappy air bit revealed with a lovely gap for interior irrigation at the top

Some structural silicone later and all should be good.

All back together as easily as it came apart. Jobsagudun.

Got a chap coming to look at the Herald on Thursday. His wife owned it in the '90s and spotted it on ebay and decided she wants it back. Which is nice. Hopefully they'll make a decent offer and they can take it home, I like it when stuff like that happens

Got all excited last night when I viewed an Omega 2.0 DTi on Facebook. Confident the guy was moveable on price I went to view tonight.

What an utter dog! Haven't seen fibreglass sills for a while!

I visited my local tip four times today and was amused to observe the brains behind the operation. The main fella wore a cowboy hat and strolled around like he was the sheriff telling people off for minor breaches of the rules. He pulled one bloke up as his trailer was 2" too big. His opposite number was a bit excitable and swore a lot. They were getting quite excited when they discovered someone had nicked their broom. Anyone would think it was the crown jewels the way they were carrying on. The sheriff was considering shutting up shop and sending out a posse to look for it.

They were doing the usual thing of eyeing up any tasty salvage with a nice stockpile of rusty bikes, toasters, a lampshade and other assorted tat. I've always wondered if tip operatives have it in their job description that they can take home as much tat as they like to bump up their wages? They must have a right stockpile of shite at home!

Should be dropping the Avensis back tomorrow. In truth I don't mind it and could happily drive one as a daily. Plus side is it ride quite well, doesn't look awful, comfy, decent kit and economical. Downside is the electric handbrake stupidly placed in front of the left knee, and poor rear visibility. It does have a reversing camera and sensors, but I'm not sure they help getting into a tight spot since they're already going mental with room to spare, and I don't like staring at the camera since I keep thinking I'll miss something in the mirrors

I can haz series 2 Jag. Put a deposit down on this after viewing it yesterday.

GR9 for weddings! It was subject to a big resto in the early 90s, and hasn't been taxed since 1992, but has four new tyres, new exhausts and long MoT so someone must have done a light recommision on it recently in order to use for hiring out or something. Runs like a dream, no knocks etc and was cheap for one of these.

Naturally it comes with issues. The paint on the roof is crazed and peeling but not rusty, but main thing is the windscreen rubber is fucked so the front carpets are piss wet. Floors are solid but that'll need sorting obviously. Heartache and poverty no doubt awaits, but at the very least it's a nice thing to look at. All I ask is it gets me the 40 miles home, and fits in the garage...

Yep, started life as a 3.4 and in blue but in the 90s they changed it to a 4.2. White isn't my first choice but can't be too picky! Best bit for me is the re-trimmed velour interior, I'm not a fan of leather so this was a bonus.

post-5013-0-29330600-1443482773_thumb.jpeg

It's weird as I thought I'd be really intimidated when I got in it, similar to when I drove Skizzer's SD1 beast, but didn't feel any of that. My first choice really would be an early SD1 as they are bloody awesome, but are way out of my budget these days. So this old Jag will do!

A cheap* white Jag restored in the 90s.  I can smell the filler from here.

Top bombing, I hope you enjoy it.

That looks great Rob, as for fitting in your garage, erm, good luck with that.

Brilliant!!! Top purchasing, I did wonder if you'd plump for that sandglow/ harvest gold one but this looks a better buy. I love these series 2's- Trading in old motahs from your south of the river base, now complete with an old XJ6, I suspect your now enjoying a drink (on your slate) at the Winchester Club.

Can't wait for updates / moar photies etc...

I wonder if that's the same one I posted on the ebay thread? Ideal for weldings?

No, not that one. This was half the price at sub-2k, so is bound to be shonky in places even though it appeared pretty solid on first inspection. As for the garage, I should have 5cm spare if I measured things right. Hopefully the bumper overriders come off if need be!
