Cornflakes were made of thicker material in 2002. Austerity measures thinned them out since.

Did you replace the crank connector? It's that which usually causes the sensor to die. Took Renault a long time before they realised this. Many 2000-era Renault failed because of that connector and I reckon one of the major reasons they had such a bad reputation for reliability during that period. No codes stored and often  only cuts out when warm.

There is a new design connector and sensor that should be fitted when replacing the crank sensor. Aftermarket still make sensors for the old connector but should really change it. 

You can actually get away with splaying out the contacts on a old sensor if you want a quick get home fix or just verify it's the fault.

It's the 65bhp going by the DVLA. Iirc they didn't use the problematic Delphi pump - only the 105bhp engine did from (admittedly now vague) memory.

No, I didn't realise there was an issue with the connectors on these engines. It had the replacement sensor about 2 years ago and has been no bother since thankfully.

I'm sorting out the insurance today and will grab the Clio tomorrow. I'll run it to work and back for a bit to make sure I know exactly how rough it is and then I'll get her listed up on here.

Whilst it's only the 65hp motor I've always felt it moved the car along quite nicely, and being an older 3 door hatchback with all the weight of a shopping bag it is surprisingly fun to chuck about. I'm quite fond of the little fucker, despite the shit jobs I've had to do on it over the years.

MOT day looms for the Corolla.

Hasn't been driven for a few weeks, so plenty of new squeaks, rattles and grinding noises to frighten me.

Treated it to a new brake light, a tickle with the tyre pressure gauge and a splash of branded unleaded to knock the fuel light off.

We'll know in an hour if I'm to suddenly become very interested in the availability of a mildly leaky Clio on another landmass...

I've had a few as courtesy cars. Great fun to rag the feck out of them. 

Being a fixed vane turbo, you get an old fashioned dollop of power when you hit boost. Quite addictive and makes it feel faster than it is!

The Clio II must be one of the last proper small cars out there before everything went super bloaty. Durable little buggers too and probably why so many are still floating around.

I picked up the magnificent beast of a Clio this evening.

All that condensation is a result of all the sex acts that were performed on me as a result of driving such an awesome car, and is definitely not a result of pop up sunroofs being absolutely shit.

At any rate, it’s not as rough as I remember and is really fun to drive. If you can get behind the wheel of it and resist driving it like you’re 17 again then you’re more grown up than I am.

A week into my new job, delivering and collecting cars for europcar, what do I think?

Job is ok, not happy with other work colleagues using their phones while driving mind. But the main point is it has reinforced to me that most new cars are shit, every night when I get in the Safrane it's like meeting an old friend, proper comfy seats, lazy gearbox and big windows to look out of. No masses of buttons and no beeps every few seconds to tell me to brake, slow down, you are too near the white line, you are too close to the car Infront, you are not driving in an eco friendly manner 😡. And why does the ' infotainment system ' have to be so complicated? 

So if nothing else I will stay for a while because of the feeling of joy I get on my way home in my shite car.

Some creative jumplead-based bodgery has enabled me to track down and overcome the best efforts of 𝕷𝖚𝖈𝖆𝖘, 𝕻𝖗𝖎𝖓𝖈𝖊 𝖔𝖋 𝕯𝖆𝖗𝖐𝖓𝖊𝖘𝖘 by getting the Land Rover to start for the first time since January - and to hit the road for the first time since August! Now I just need to make a permanent fix in time for shitefest

I drove the Z4 to the office yesterday.  It's definitely massively better to drive since I had the tracking done (it was toeing out quite badly on one side according to the garage).  It did need a jump start but I only needed to use one jump pack so the battery must have only been just below the threshold for starting as most of the time it takes two jump packs in parallel to get it to turn over.

I really need to sort the vacuum leak out though.  I was driving home from a mate's late last night, decided to give it some beans in 5th and it bleeped at me, put the EML light on and died.  I tried to do the usual trick of dipping the clutch, switching off and restarting, except that one of the battery terminals had come loose so when I tried to restart it lost all electrics and I was hurtling along an unlit A-road at 60mph with no headlights.  Fortunately the terminal then made contact enough to bring the lights back on, and I put it back in 5th gear and bump started it, but it's not something I want to experience again in a hurry.

Careful with the electrics on the Z4! They seem to be rather electrically fragile and it's not unknown to loose coding (especially the airbag modules) or have other issues crop up during high/low voltage. I need to go visit a chap in Bristol where his Z4 has been off the road for a year after the airbag system threw a tizzy and forgot it's VINs after a flat battery.

I suspect I have a (albeit much smaller) vacuum leak somewhere on mine Z too. Might dig out some old bits to make my own smoke test machine next.

Yes, it's not ideal.  I already had the BCM throw a (thankfully temporary) wobbly after the battery went flat a couple of months back.  I've now reattached the terminal to the battery in a hopefully more permanent manner.

Still, at least it's not a 2000s PSA product where before disconnecting the battery you had to wind down the driver's window, switch the sidelights on and dance three times backwards round the car while singing "Rasputin" by Boney Em or the car would brick itself and never run again.
