My idea out then, it sounded like a condenser failure. Probably fuel then.

Or ignition module. Those like to go pop.

I'm guessing a bit, but at that age I'd be expecting a HEI ignition system (so conventional cap, but electronic trigger and an external ignition amp), worth checking the condition of the cap and plugging in a known good ignition amp module as they can and do fail.

I have a vague, vague memory that the distributor on these is an absolute git to get at, so the cap and rotor are quite likely to be ancient.  The ignition amplifier relies on a good thermal contact with the metal surface it's attached to for heat sinking, so it should have thermal compound under it.  People often don't replace that when they fit a new module, so it ends up cooking itself.

Of course after checking the basics...I absolutely, definitely didn't spend far too many hours chasing a missfire on one car which turned out to be a HT lead that had come adrift from the plug...

You are reading my mind. A 320 estate is very much on the radar and fairly high up the list, although a decent 500 or 55 is far beyond what I'm willing to spend!

I'm still thoroughly enjoying mine. There's an E500 estate on Ebay at the moment, same age, colour and similar mileage to my CDI but 7x what mine cost!

There’s a specialist just up the road that uses our neighbours hanger for storage. Redline engineering, ottershaw. Huge prices.

That hangar is nice inside.  😎

It certainly has a lot of nice toys.

I've moved on to the other wing now. Fortunately this one's not attached to the car allowing me more time to do stuff. I painted two coats of Electrox with a roller but I still had issues with bumps and brush strokes as I had on the other wing. Then I discovered the magic of white spirit!

It can thin out and dissolve the stuff pretty well. It's removed all the bumps and smoothed the panel out quite nicely-

High build primer will do the rest. I'm well pleased.

I need to check out the exact workings. But I’ll check the simple stuff first as you say, hopefully a loose lead… 🤞 🤞

Just got a bollocking from an old bag at the petrol station.

There were two vacant pumps, both on the left. She was needlessly waiting for one to become free that was on the right. My filler cap is on the offside too, but I drove round her to one of the vacant pumps, and stretched the hose round to fill up my car.

Didn't think anything of it, and as I was paying (at the pump), she stormed over and asked why I was in such a hurry, claiming that I was "jumping the queue"!

I explained that the "queue" consisted of just her, and that there was no need to wait as two pumps were available. She then said that it was illegal to use a pump that's not on the same side that you fill up and that I was breaking the law. I told her to phone the police then, and that I'd wait for them to arrive so they could arrest me!

She marched back over to her car shaking her head. I could see what I assume was her long-suffering husband sat in the passenger seat looking the other direction. Poor bloke!

The vast majority of the abuse my wife gets in her job as a pharmacy technician are from older people. Vile, condescending, arrogant,  insular, entitled small town helmets.

Wonder if her car has got the little arrow on the fuel guage icon that tells which side the filler is!, and if she has spotted it!!

Not many people know about or have noticed the little arrow ( and some cars don’t have it).

They've had all their life to become completely sure of all the things that they're wrong about.

Out on the red C90. It looks like I've sold the brown one to a guy from Devon and we're meeting at Leicester services which is roughly half way. Sold it for £1600, £200 more than I paid which'll cover my diesel in the van.

Or perhaps they are sick of the bureaucratic inhuman way the medical system works in the UK, and are old, sick and in pain. Let's see if you're a little bundle of joy when you're 80 and full of arthritis.

I wasn't really referencing the medical situation really, more the petrol station incident.

I'm very aware the medical system in the country is on its knees. However the reaction to this is this is where I'd differ. Instead of taking my frustrations out on whatever stressed out, overworked member of staff is infront of me, I would vote to improve the situation. This is definitely something that's a generational issue and there's plenty of statistics to back that up.

It's not just the problems with the system, it's the whole "computer says no" attitude that people dealing with the unwell have that gets people furious. There's several on here with chronic conditions, and their experiences in getting treatment or their medication would try the patience of a 21 year old Saint.

Incidentally, I worked in a pharmacy for four years in the 80s and never saw any old people being rude. So it seems to be another of the trends that started when everyone became slaves to process and procedure.

I deal with a lot of pensioners and  get rudeness extremely rarely. So if people are constantly rude to someone I'd say they need to look at their own manners.

One of those moments where normal people would think you are crazy.

Did a deal with @paulplom a couple of days ago. Traded my 107 with him for an S80 that was his father in law's. Paul wasn't hiding anything and I'm sure he won't mind me saying the car was pretty grubby when I got it and a bit rough around the edges. I spent a few hours on it cleaning it and making it look smarter. It cleaned up really well.

Anyhow I drove across to Norwich, the land of @JJ0063 and swapped the Volvo for this classic piece of Nissan engineering. The Volvo was a dream to drive across I won't lie. So effortless and comfy, even I was wondering if I was making the right decision.

Buzzing back home in the 4 speed Nissan was a lot slower and not quite as comfortable ha. Was a lot of fun though as you can imagine.

I'm sure I've seen this sat on the car park at my local doctor's surgery.  Unless there were two lowered silver Sunny estates in these parts obvs.

I ran out of primer after 1 full coat, but it's allowed me to spend the rest of the day wet sanding and levelling the panel with some 240 grit paper. It's very smooth with barely any bumps or valleys. I think a coat of grey primer, a light sanding with some 600 grit paper will have me ready for paint.
