Must have been a sign of things to come because last week I started (before it got cold) making a blue plastic Jeep for my niece for Christmas because she didn't want a Barbie pink Barbie Jeep.

It's not even a Jeep Jeep. Looks more like a Toyota to me. In plastic.

All modernz is shit.

Low pressure fuel pump, apparently. Won't be any change out of £500- Merry Christmas from Volvo.

@Tickman: A new R8 screen is only about £50 (not including fitting), most excesses are more than that so there's not really any point.  While they shouldn't lodge it as a claim, some insurers do because they're bastards.

Commute to work today was as much of a pain in the arse as expected.  It took me 20 minutes to get out onto the bypass (usually takes 4).  To be fair the traffic then trundled along OK until it got to Norwich, which was jammed up solid.  Also a Pigsarsehole had managed to leave the road in spectacular style overnight and was wedged in some trees about 30' off the carriageway.  The roads in Norwich were mainly clear, but when I parked up and went to get the bike out of the boot I nearly went down on my arse as the bit of road near the gutter had obviously been missed by the gritters and was black ice.  There were a couple of bits on the cycle route which had also been missed, which made things interesting - although my folding bike currently has a chunky BMX tyre on the back which seems to give decent traction.

The run home was fine, roads were almost completely clear until I turned into my street - although a couple of fuckwits got mortally offended when I had the temerity to want to do more than 35 in a 60 zone and overtook them.  The winter tyres didn't seem to be doing that great of a job this morning, but then the snow was the nasty granular icy stuff that they don't tend to cope particularly well with anyway.  They actually made much more of a difference this evening when the snow was more compacted.  Also the car no longer wheelspins on the throttle in third on a damp road, which is good.  I've actually found that even the heater is adequate if I keep it on recirculate - it doesn't turn the cabin into a sauna like the Toyota's heater does, but it manages to take the chill off quite convincingly.

I did wonder if something like that could be just plumbed in between the tank and the filter.

Don't see why it shouldn't.  I have a feeling the Getz's current issues may be caused by the low pressure pump, as it's making some rather odd noises when priming the system - I think I may have run it too low on diesel and borked it - so I might try one of those Facet-style pumps in line with the existing pump if changing the diesel filter doesn't sort it.

Started the 1300 t'other day. It sounded VERY unhappy and alternated between various idle speeds and the number of cylinders it would fire on until it was warmed up which took an age.

Took it for a brief run around the block and it drove alright but the demist is dire and the heated rear screen is feeble. How on earth did I used to daily this thing in the winter?!

Wish the weather would improve, want to get the MOT done before Christmas and these aren't ideal DIY conditions...

Looking into the sunroof and its manky weatherstrip on the 740. Google isn’t much help but it has made me wonder if perhaps the crank is out of phase (the roof does sit slightly proud - something Old Man moronically tries to force down sometimes by hammering on it). I’ll have a look at that when the roof isn’t covered in ice.

I don’t have a clue where to find a replacement weatherstrip (Volvo breakers in the NW anyone?) and especially with the snow we’ve had, I’m really starting to need it replacing, it’s extremely brittle. Luckily the headlining is rotten anyway, so I’m not concerned about that getting buggered up, but I do need to get it sorted as one rear footwell is slightly damp (drain tube???), and the aperture has rust in it that I know about but can’t get to at the moment as I can’t slide the roof back.

It’s one of the few things really pissing me off about the car (glovebox catch and headlining are the others) so any help with it (especially parts sourcing) would be appreciated.

ETA: what kind of bulbs are used to illuminate the centre console/dash? The one in my heater control panel needs replacing. I know how to get to it but not what sort of bulb it is.

There's an excess to pay and I think it counts as a claim...

Yes you will have a 75xs with direct line.

They use Autoglass as preferred supplier this means you get new side trims!!! (Bits down the side of the screen)

Be careful though! Because they offer a decent warranty if there’s any sign of rust to the aperture some lads will not refit the screen!! On a r8 this is quite common. The newer version Honda rover effort are nackard these days in the bottom corners!

When the guy turns up you need to make it clear that your not a pain in the arse you need your car and just to fit the screen. I don’t want to worry you btw! There may not be any! Just no use making a bad day worse!

It wont work with that pump That pump is only for carbed engines. You need a low pressure inline injection pump. I use them for oval racing on cars where we retain the injection system. I think i got the last couple from Demon Tweeks

We had 16 inches of snow but it is melting rapidly today. Well, apart from the pavements which are rather slippery

Pulling into the petrol station and hearing "That's a Princess!" or similar you'd think would get tiresome.  If it weren't for the joy the sight of the car seems to engender in people that shout it out and who quite often used to have one I suppose it would be.  I doubt the chap that came over for a brief conversation as I was putting fuel in it today expected to see a Princess again, let alone in the middle of December, and it was nice to hear very briefly about the two he had a few years ago.

It was really nice just how patient people were with the car too, hanging back and giving me room rather than bullying.  Particularly useful considering how grumpy it is when cold, not helped by the choke cable slowly unlocking itself as you drive along so you constantly have to fiddle with it (should put a clothes peg on it).  I'd really like to drive the Princess a lot more, get it loosened up and back in use, it's just a rotten time of year for it.  The suspension upgrade is proving to be a better decision every time I take it out, the car is more enjoyable to drive as a result of it, hopefully as a result 2018 will see me get a lot more use out of the old girl.  Oh, and I've got used to the vague clutch so it's okay for pottering between now and when I replace it, I shan't be going any great distance until that's fixed properly which might even happen next week.

Just bought all the parts I need to overhaul The Volvo's rear brakes (hopefully at some point next spring) from Euro Car Parts. I managed to get 50% off everything by virtue of being a subscriber to their email newsletter

Discount code: FLASH50, valid until midnight tonight ^^

Used to use a clothes peg on my old Marina - worked a treat :)

I took a sander to a wooden peg to get one just the right size for how much choke my old MG Midget used to need. After that it lived clipped on the metal rod up to the interior mirror when not in use, I think it went with the car when sold too.

^^ hope it’s on more cylinders than that blue 182 at Cannock, last Saturday!

The Volvo's new number plates arrived today. I'm pretty pleased with them:

All I need to do now is wait from some mildish weather, in order to attach them to the car with sticky pads ^^

Ouch!

I had the Talbot Express camper slightly sideways on some ice this morning too. That woke me up pretty quickly.
