I replaced a knackered engine mount on the battered 75 dizzler, which has brought NVH levels back to reasonable levels, but it's surprising how much diesel thrum gets transmitted through the body. The loose door cards are still rattling away to themselves. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a car that's had a fair bit of abuse thrown at it by Previous owners

I also went for a hoon in the newly MOT'd 155 which feels very chuckable, agile and rev happy, which makes for a nice contrast with the 75 dizzler.

A clash of styles on the drive...

Treat the 75 as a tool Matthew. I must admit my pez 75 never lived up to expectations, so maybe I was also expecting too much!

I won this on eBay yesterday. Although not strictly 'shite' it does have some good credentials ...

1) It's the 1.9 TDi, which allegedly is the one to avoid as the new 2.0 TDi was the one to have

2) I won it for just shy of £880 which probably makes it one of the cheapest B6 Passats in the country (that work and are roadworthy anyway)

I've been looking for a cheap diesel now the XM has gone and a sale secured on the Audi, I've now ended up with 2 as I also agreed to buy something else on Friday night, at the same time I put a bid in for this. Sod's law!

The Passat isn't too bad, the interior is absolutely gopping though so it's off to be valeted today and hopefully she will come back much more respectable. 161k and no history - what can possibly go wrong ??

One of my good mates has a 55 plate 2.0 TDi which he bought for £1400 with 150k on the clock and condition wise I don't think it's as clean as this, so I think it was well priced.

Those passats are decent cars but extremely boring. Can't complain at 800 quid though.

1.9 is [iMHO] a better, less complicated engine than the 2.0

I was gonna say the same thing if the 2.0 is common rail and 1.9 pd.

I think the 2.0 is a variant of the 5 cyl Audi Diesel (minus a cylinder) as opposed to a bored out 1.9. The 2.0 do go well but this 1.9 isn't that bad really

I have a bit of a dilemma, There's a car that I want to buy from deepest darkest Cornwall that has no mot. The seller wants £750 for it and will deliver it for £350 but will only accept a bank transfer as payment. I offered to pay a deposit and then pay the rest upon delivery but he wants the full amount of £1100 before bringing it and won't accept paypal.

What are my options? Potentially throw £1100 down the drain if he decides to just keep the money or Go down to Cornwall myself and pay for the car?

Had a go at straightening a dent in the door of the roffle Gooner the other day.

Assembled a selection of random hammers and bits of wood, took the door card off, and gave it a good old bashing.

For a half-arsed job using unsuitable tools, and considering I know nowt about metal-bashing, I reckon I've done alright.  It's less dented than before, although a bit more ripply.  With a bit of filler and some paint it might even pass for a proper repair, although that will involve going out and spending some money.  I'll have to at some point though as there's a bit of bare metal there.

Find another example of the car, for sale by somebody less awkward?

I went up to Birmingham yesterday to look at a replacement for the 25. It looked good and a deposit was paid. The collection thread cherry may be popped very soon.

It's the only one currently for sale.

If that's what it is I'd have the SX over the GTI any day. I still have the scars from my GTI. The pre-facelift dash is better too, and not just because you can put coffee cups on it.

It's not the 505 Gti estate is it?

Edit: duuuhh

Can twosmoke check it out as others have said?

I'm not sure if this is News, a Grump or a Stupid Question.  News wins I think.

My Discovery has run out of 1. MOT and 2. tread on the front tyres.  Simple: jack it up, take the front wheels to my man Steve at Smartyre in Fforestfach, refitting is the reverse of removal.

Except it's got these stupid, stupid shiny metal covers over the wheel bolts, and the fecking things just won't come off.  I bought the 'proper' removal tool from Bearmach (who were spectacularly rude in the shop, remind me to mail order everything from John Craddock in future) and it's completely fecking useless:

About as much use as a plastic wheel bolt cover removal tool by Skizzer, on Flickr

I can't even figure out a way of drilling the bloody things off.  Any suggestions?

The car is blowing a lot of smoke out of the exhaust manifold, the LPG pump (or something) has packed up and it leaks profusely from three of the four pointless holes in the roof.  Oh, and the battery won't hold a charge.

This is going to be one of those where I spend three times what it's worth on a service and MOT and then I won't be able to give it away.  Fucking thing.

If Bearmach were rude I would be tempted to go back with that busted tool and give them a lesson in being rude. Won't achieve anything but would be very satisfying and restore the balance in the force.

In your position, frustration would have driven me to hammers and screwdrivers on those covers. My plan C would involve waiting until Mrs P wasn't looking before pinching two butter knives from the kitchen to use as levers either side. Probably wouldn't work but nothing if not a resourceful try.

Otherwise in Autoshite fashion, hammer something smaller, kill with fire, WCPGW, etc.

This post has been certified 100% unhelpful. Soz.

Yeah, its the 505 gti estate. The issue I'm having is sending £1100 via bank transfer. The eBay description is vague and it looks like a shed but its not the buying it blind I'm having the issues with, as far as I'm aware its very difficult to get your money back if the guy just decides to keep the car and the money.

Long-nose Vise Grips any good? http://www.diy.com/departments/irwin-long-nose-pliers/174407_BQ.prd

Other than that I'd be tempted to chisel the "lid" off to make a flap so I could pull it off. Double entry for the Double Entendre thread there, triple if you include "double entry".

Thanks - good suggestions.  I've tried hammers and screwdrivers and long nose pliers already, and got nothing but a pinched hand off the pliers.

Butter knives are a good idea if I can maybe bend the tips over... hmm.  I have some old ones somewhere.

Otherwise I might try applying some heat, or drilling holes in the end and threading some bowden cable through then looping it round the Jag's tow bar and driving off.

Can't be arsed going back to moan at Bearmach.  They only care about chequerplate'n'shit and are right the other side of Swansea.  Saying that, there's a workshop next door to them that had this lot parked outside:

The Land Rover tool is only for taking the cap off the locking wheel nut. If it won't come off easily put a 27mm socket on it and turn it a few times to loosen it. The other 4 don't come off and if you can't get a 27mm socket on them you will need the hammer and chisel to remove the chrome caps then new wheel nuts.

Aha, that explains it.  Doh.

Send a transport guy to get it and pay cash on collection. I can recommend someone. You send him the money. He pays for it and brings it to you.
