Took the Maestro and tow bar to the fitters and firstly he said he doesn't fit used bars then when he looked at it didn't think the set up will fit properly as there are two types, one for metal one for plastic bumpers.  He said he'd see if he could find some more info to see if it could be adapted though.  

 

I think it might be easier to just stick a towbar on a panda, but I don't think the 999cc engine could pull the foreskin off a rice pudding at a bar mitzvah.

Like every other Fiesta I've owned mine has an oil leak from some unknown own source. Not a major worry and it's nicely coating under the car,but, as the oil lights stand on for a few seconds after starting thought it was time I put some in.

 

While I was there had a quick check round and bugger me the expansion tank was empty. It's not been over heating (though it does get hot in very slow traffic) so I filled it up, but checked around as it doesn't leave puddles and found this on the thermostat housing

 

 

Only a bit wet but i suppose over time it's affected it. It definitely isn't HGF as

 

 

Water was a nasty colour but I'll live with it and start thinking about cleaning it all up and maybe some new hoses

While I've been at home, the Renault got an unsolicited inspection and it appears to have developed a gearbox problem (not as a result of the tow start attempt, I hasten to add) in that it's locking everything up when in gear.  It could be another reason the car was laid up in the 90s.  Suspicion is of a stiff/seized input shaft or an incorrectly installed clutch.  We'll take the gearbox off and inspect just to be extra sure everything is at it should be and nothing has moved.  Bit disheartening for me to hear the news really when everything was doing so well but I had been warned that the gearboxes on these can be a bit... Renault.

Last week Old Man and I did 190 miles in the A4 to go on various parts-related adventures. Got 32mpg too which is good for a 2.6 petrol V6 Audi doing motorway speeds all day.

Old Man spent Sunday on various little bits like a rear folding seat bush, a missing piece of sill trim, and various other boring bits.

Just ordered a pair of Bilstein B8s to sort out the rear shocks. 

We're hoping it'll sort out the weird reverse rake problem (at least one rear shock is fucked). If it doesn't, then it's going to end up with adjustable coilovers on the front. 

 

Does anyone have a pair of spotlamps less than 80mm tall? Want to fit some to make use of the foglight wiring but we only have so much space. Hella Comets (the rectangaular ones) are slightly too big and expensive.

there will be a dozen or so big hi-top vans in the carpark, which the eastern europeans will be filling with as many bonnets, doors, wings, bumpers and the like the van will possibly hold and still get the van's doors shut.

 

I went to U-Pull-It in York last Sat.

No vans to be seen but a few Poles about pillaging the VAG stuff as ever. They got in an English registered mk5 Golf and left as we did. Lot of English folks about, a couple of blokes Old Man was talking to looking at '90s 5 Serieseses, and some young lads pulling bits off various VAG cars to upgrade their Polo or whatever.

 

However, there was an eastern European artic being loaded with some sort of engines (PDs?) all bloody day.

A suspicious amount of the VAG diesels were missing the engines.

The little automatic panda came home today with a fresh mot - sailed right through not even an advisory!

Shouldn't really have favourites in the fleet but this is just such an honest little car I can't see myself parting with it.

I saw a old girl last week in a white E reg Fiat Panda 4x4 with a front bull bar, I've never seen it about before and it was clearly just a daily driver with dents and scabs over it

Is it not the springs that control the rideheight rather than  dampers? Reverse rake would suggest the rear springs are too soft?

Its this 1982 Cortina 2.0 Ghia S, 80000 miles and in great condition. It needs that gash bonnet badge skipping and probably a few other little jobs but it's ideal for what I'm after at the moment.

I do actually know the car and owner so I'm not expecting any disappointments plus it's local to me. The current owner hasn't got time to use it any more and wants it to go to a good home. That number plate will be binned and put back on it's original X plate again.

The Renault has an electrical problem.  Quelle surprise!  Bit of an odd one.  Fitted the new headlight and I'd thought that the dimness of one bulb was down to the fact there was no silvering on the knackered old headlight bowl and no lens.  However, on fitting the new headlight one bulb remains really dim.  We've swapped the bulbs side to side and checked continuity on the bulbs and found that the bulb is not at fault.  What's even stranger is that when you put it on main beam, the dim bulb gets dimmer.  We've made sure there's a good earth for that light unit too and that hasn't made a jot of difference compared to a poor earth location.

 

Mike has done some tests and the bulb plug on the dim side does behave differently to the bright side with the voltage dropping from about 11 on sidelights and dipped beam to -1 on main beam (not even sure how that's possible, but I'm not a sparky).  Mike suspects there's a broken, chafed or shorting wire in the headlight circuit so he's unwrapping the loom to investigate further.

 

Any ideas welcome on this one, it's not something I've come across before.

Omg that's nice! Crystal green, one of my fav Ford colours of that era.

That's the 2nd cortina I've seen with locks fitted to the bottoms of the doors. WTF is that all about?
