The farmer has been Harvesting here this weekend and I nearly forgot to close the bedroom windows before he passed close by.

It's my first summer here and the old grape vine that I amateurishly cut back last year hasn't been detered and is fruiting up nicely too.

I’m not even surprised at this point.

One of my neighbours appears to have a new car. There’s what I think is a Ford GT in gulf racing colours in one of their spaces. He’s just come in in the red v8 cobra but didn’t get a chance to ask about it. It could be something else though, as it looks tiny ( about the size of my x1/9) and doesn’t have a front numberplate.

he also has a Porsche as a daily and this is his wife’s little runaround.

Good news: the C6 passed its first MOT since I bought it 11 months ago.

Bad news: it was pointed out to me that some of the pipework underneath's looking a little crusty.

Not good, however if it is any consolation they are a piece of piss to do the HG on.

I had a feeling they were.

Problem is, the spark plug bores were quite aggressively throwing coolant out, as was the open expansion tank.

It might have dropped a liner.

Got a few jobs done this weekend, although didn't have the energy to start anything major.  I fitted the headlight mechanism from the donor Honda Elite to the Spacy, which is a job I've been meaning to do for a while but kept putting it off because it's a bit of a fiddle.  The Spacy's headlight is stuck in the up position and the motor doesn't work.  The motor doesn't do much on the replacement headlight either, but unlike the UK market bikes the US versions have a manual override in the shape of a plastic knob on the motor assembly which you can pull out to engage with the motor shaft and then twiddle it to raise and lower the light.  I had to swap the light unit itself over as the US version doesn't have a sidelight (and also presumably would dip the wrong way), and one of the studs holding the plastic cowling onto the frame snapped off.  It went back together well enough though, and the headlight is now down for the first time in about 10 years.

20240728_210914.jpg.225c175360b5ba0d1d379b8ca31847b2.jpg

I also did some more buggering about to work out how to fit the exhaust from the Elite, which has slightly different mounting points to the original - I reckon that if I modify one bracket and turn another through 180 degrees I should be able to get it fitted reasonably securely.  Once that's done I can then concentrate on the last few bits it needs to get back on the road again.

I'd noticed a minor coolant leak on the Merc since I changed the expansion tank, so I removed that again and replaced the remaining spring clip with a Jubilee clip, which seems to have sorted the issue.  I also spent some more time staring at the auxiliary belt and trying to work out if there's something I'm missing or if it really is going to be as much of an arse to do as I'd initially thought.  The conclusion was the latter.  I might even end up farming it out to a garage as I really don't have the mojo at the moment.

I was going to change the plugs on the Renault 6 but it turned out I'd ordered the wrong ones - I misread the letters on the plug (they are awkward to see with the plugs in the engine in my defence) and ordered BPR6ES instead of BPR6HS.  Fortunately I found someone selling a NOS set of Bosch plugs for £notmuch on eBay, so I've ordered those, together with a gallon of 20W50 as the oil I'd ordered from Carousel Car Parts got "lost in transit"...  So the 6 will be getting a service next week, weather permitting.

I've done a fair few miles in the Z4 this weekend, given that it was very much convertible weather.  It's been behaving fine, other than at one point I noticed a strange scraping noise from the engine - obviously when I got home and popped the bonnet it wasn't doing it anymore and it hasn't done it since, so not sure what was going on there - possibly something that got kicked up from the road and was caught against a pulley or something like that.

I mixed up a couple of litres of two-stroke fuel and tipped them into the Mobylette.  I then wheeled it out of the garage (from whence it hasn't emerged for several months now) intending to take it for a quick blezz round the block, but it was running so well that I ended up going out round the back lanes for about 45 minutes, and doing more miles than it's probably done in the last 25 years combined.  It still won't go over 35 though - I think the aftermarket exhaust I bought for it last year is rather more restrictive than the original.  One day when I have a few more spare pennies I'll treat it to another expansion exhaust...

Today I am waiting for a gift to arrive, a gift from a forum member! It is being delivered by another member.

As I mentioned in the grin thread, it is an astonishing act of kindness that makes me think that this place is still what it used to be in the ways that matter!

I've finished building what has been nicknamed in our house as "the bus shelter" so we have somewhere outside when it's raining. It has the usual slight level of shonkyness associated with anything I do but it only cost just over £300 for all the wood, roof etc. I still need to fit gutters then the test will be how much water it actually keeps out.

That looks at least as well built as the similar thing my mum had built in her garden, which cost a teeny bit more than £300.

I believe the done thing is now to cover it in lights and decorations from B&M

Bloody hell someone built and supplied the wood for 300 quid? I wish I'd had their number as this was more than £300 just in it's components.

Oh, "teeny" was sarcastic, it was, uh, a lot more than I would have paid to have a bus shelter in the garden!

Judging by the quality ( both build and wood) of tiny sheds for £200, I’d say it will last at least twice as long if you make it yourself from decent wood.

Bastard. Those big 18s holding it on looked accessible only by puffing away with 2 linked spanners. I'm on holiday this week so I'm allowed to work smarter not harder.

Chapped it round with these.

Hey gang. Missed this place. Life has been kicking me in the nads the past few months.

Shite news, my wife's lovely FRV got written off and for once it wasn't my fault so we got a Toyota Corolla Verso, and it has the worst auto gearbox of any car I have ever driven but otherwise is pretty cool and practical
