It's a hydraulic system and in theory needs to not have debris in the fluid BECAUSE BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN; fluid velocity in a brake system is zero and ptfe tape is as flimsy as cheap bogroll, so any hypothetical blockage is pretty unlikely. It can cause problems in powered hydraulics, clogging filters and sensors and preventing non-return valves from closing.

That doesn't look like Scotland.

But why have you brought the rain with you?

The Bijou might have worked with the 602cc engine.  With the earlier engine I imagine they are absolutely dire to drive.  I do like the shape of them though.

Or maybe even a 652 upgrade...

I'm sure the Saab 93 used to be further up the wall than that. You got a great view of the large welded patches on the rear of the sills.

I’m sure the cut away mini was there when I first visited it in about 1970.

After nearly three years Boris has vacated my back garden into my neighbours (which has access to the road) where he decided to cough, missfire and then die.

He did the same yesterday and I removed and cleaned his burnt points and he was good again so I think the curse of the iffy condenser has struck.

On the hunt now for a motor factors that still keep points and condensers.

Saab is done for another year with advisories for the front brakes. I’ll do them soon.

Kia is at the garage, on the journey there I was surprised at how sharp the brakes are now. Hopefully just the TREs I couldn’t find is all it needs.

If you’re near Gravesend try Chalmers in Harmer Street. He stocks all sorts of obsolete tat, if Jim doesn’t have it he’ll know where to get them

Yes back in my RAC days he would often help me out before we had to use ECP.

Surprisingly GSF motor factors on Medway city estate had them in lntermotor flavour but hurt at nearly £20.

Back in the olden days when I ran a garage they were £3.50 each.

Intermotor condenser 😞

Same thing that you can get on eBay for a couple of quid. Ime you'll get 0-500 miles out of them before it fails again.

Distributor doctor or full electronic ignition in my book. Or know good NOS.

Modern condensers are utter crap. I don’t know why, but they seem to fail a lot more than they used to.

Totally agree. Back in the nineties I only fitted stuff made by CI (commercial ignition in a orange and green box) and only replaced a condenser if the points were badly burnt. I mean do condensers wear out,if you have a good one leave it be.

And back then in my wrecks i always had second hand bits of ignition system rattling around in the door pocket too.

We have rain forecast here tonight and tomorrow so I couldn't leave him on the neighbours grass in case I ploughed it up getting out later.

One of the reasons the 2cv is on lumenition is to get rid of the condenser issue. Although the x1/9 is still on points seemingly issue-free.

I was thinking about replacing the front tyres due to the questionable wet performance and worsening perishing. That's decided that for me then...

Or mount some good quality polypropylene film caps external to the distributor somewhere.  That setup on TPA was fitted in December 2020 and somewhere in the region of 3000 miles ago and when last checked the points still looked pretty much like new, so seems to be doing its job.

That's a good looking Mog. I've had one of each in the 70's, Traveller, saloon, 1956 split, and an ex Waterboard Van.

I've had to get a couple of tyres for my Yank mobile apartment. £326 each. Yikes! Also bought a Torque Multiplier to get the wheel nuts off. What a lovely bit of kit they are. Chunky solid metal mechanical shite with a windy handle that uses very little effort as it's name implies. I was using a BFO spider and a couple of bits of pipe on one of the spiders legs and standing on it to crack the nuts off and after a blow out on the M4 it was time to find an easier way. Stops me dreading a blow out.

Been having a bit of a tinker with the Getz today, as one does when one acquires a new conveyance.  I plugged the Delphi in to see if it could find anything that might be related to the hiccupping on a very light throttle, and it came up with an EGR valve low voltage code, which might have something to do with it.  Unfortunately the EGR isn't very easy to get at without removing the scuttle panel and I didn't have time for that, but I've cleared the fault code and I'm going to see if it comes back after a bit of mileage.

Next job was to swap the wheels front to rear - I noticed on the run home yesterday that when I tried to exit a roundabout with any degree of enthusiasm it struggled to put the power down, wheelspinning on the throttle in second gear.  On inspection today the rear wheels were adorned with nearly new Matadors and the fronts had a pair of mismatched budget tyres, both in decent condition but older and with a bit less tread.  So the Matadors are now on the front - appreciate they aren't exactly Pirelli P-Zeros but they probably have a better chance of coping with the engine's torque than the Sailwin and Polaris tyres which are now on the back.  I can see a remap in this car's near future so it's going to need all the help it can get traction wise, especially with 175-section tyres.

I also fitted a pair of LED sidelight bulbs - the sidelights were very dim and on inspection the bulbs had gone rather black.  The LEDs have improved things considerably, although when wrangling the nearside bulb holder out of the back of the reflector I somehow managed to pull the bulb out so there's now a W5W bulb rattling around inside the headlight.  At some point I suppose I'll have to take the light unit off and fish it out, but that can wait.

Only other fault I've found so far is that the reversing lights are very intermittent, which could be a pain around here in the winter, although the rear fog would probably help in a pinch.  As with the 107 I also need to upgrade the horn, as it's pretty pathetic.

It's a great fun thing to drive, although in a very different way to the 107.  The Peugeot handles better and feels much more agile, but the Hyundai is generally more grown up - it's quieter inside and the stereo is better (not that that's saying much) - and the brakes are fantastic being discs all round.  And the performance, even in standard form, is quite impressive.  The Pug goes fairly well for what it is but you often have to rag the tits off it to keep up with outside-lane traffic.  The Hyundai is a lot more relaxing - you can plod your foot down in a high gear and it will just pick up and go.  It's odd, the first time I drove a Getz (a brand new petrol-engined hire car in Australia in 2008), I absolutely hated it and couldn't wait to get back behind the wheel of my then-18-year-old Saab 900, but the two I've owned since then (both diesel, the first with the objectively dreadful VM 3-pot) I've really liked.

It was about a 5 hour run or so for me, and despite being a thirsty old thing I reckon it’s well worth the fuel for the amount of comfort. I’d feel knackered after doing that run in the insight whereas it was a breeze in the LS.
