Had a look at a Qashqai for a mate earlier, it’s due for MOT but won’t pass in this state. Apparently this is a regular failure point, but how can a modern car be made of such poor metal? Cost cutting from Nissan / Renault or supplier squeezed hard, so uses chinesium to compensate. Either way, I’d want to be able to trust my rear suspension arm for longer than 9 years!

Earning it's keep. Glad it's this getting dirty and destroyed rather than the Civic.

Replaced the key rubber. Cheap and a little thing, but scruffy buttons are annoying.

Replaced the A4 window regulator tonight with a £15 eBay special. I hate doing these as they are always a pallava and this didn't disappoint.

Door card came off pretty easy. Duct tape on the inner liner suggests someone has been in here before.
b2bf1a08b125bc80bce113e97f98faa6.jpg

Quite clear why it no longer worked when the motor was removed.

Inner liner was a fight. Ended up cutting the glue as best as I could without ripping the liner.

On these, the whole top of the window comes out. This era VAG seems to do it differently on every model. Golf V/A3 have a removable outer door skin. Skoda has the glass come out instead.

Old regulator unbolts from the glass. Sliding the glass down is easy when it's all fallen to pieces and the cable snapped.

New regulator fitted.

Then back in the car. Found that one of the threaded sections didn't fit the original bolts. One side did but for some reason the other didn't. I secured it with a bolt and threadlock nut instead of the screw.

Then two out of the three screws that hold the motor on sheared. To add to my woes, it started chucking it down despite the original forecast to not. Used a fat cable tie around the motor to hold it in place. Seems to work just fine. Bodge but the only option would be to fit a new regulator as they have sheared in the winder.

So I gave the window a whirl and it worked so far and then slowed right down. Looking at the other side it was obvious what the problem was. I didn't put the wing mirror cable on the correct side. FFS.

With the window fully open and removing the speaker again, I could get the connector back out again. Then reroute on the correct side. Much better than pulling the whole window back out again.

Then I finished putting it all back together again.

The car is mostly sorted now. It desperately needs the cooling system flushing out as the cabin heater is lukewarm at best. I wonder if someone put washer fluid in the coolant reservoir rather than topping up with the wrong type of coolant. Either way, the cold weather makes it unpleasant to have a cold car.

Also have an aux belt with pulley kit to fit. Hopefully remove the squeal it has. Part of the kit has an alternator overrun pulley. Never replaced one before, so that'll be something new to learn. Already got a cheap tool to allow it to be removed.

It isn't fast, but amayama.com is an absolute goldmine for OEM daihatsu parts.

They have warehouses in Japan and UAE, so postage of parts takes between 4 days and a week and a half, but quality is top notch.

You will need to know the equivalent JDM Toyota model, but the site has superb exploded diagrams.

Someone else recommended that site, but I struggled to find L251 bits on it. Not sure there was an equivalent Toyota?

Ah, sorry yes I see what you mean. I've checked and I'm not 100% sure but can't seem to find a corresponding Toyota JDM model for the L251. I would imagine that parts will be available, but you need to know the part numbers and then Amayama will be a great resource. What is it you need specifically? Certainly for my Sirion I was able to get part numbers from Amayama and either order from them, or if I needed it more quickly, order from a Toyota main dealer quoiting the part numbers at them. The second option was expensive though.

The exploded parts diagrams are all taken under license from epc-data.com, might be some info there?

Figure it's worth a two minute update here rather than perpetually bumping my thread for the sake of a two minute update!

Have heard back from the current owner of the Merc V123 I'm looking at and arranged to drop by again tomorrow afternoon for a second visit.  Targets will be to get the replacement rear quarter window in and to go over the sills and inner wings with a hammer to see how much of the car I make disappear.

If time permits I'll see if I can get it up and running for more than 30 seconds and see what works and what doesn't.

Then I'll make a decision on what I'm doing with it.  There will be three options.

1. I take it on as a resurrection project for me.

2. I take it on as a short term "Get it running well, fix a few things, get it cleaned and into a more attractive state to sell" basis.

3. Leave them with a documented list of what I've found and wish them all the best.

So long as we don't get totally rained out tomorrow we should have a decision on its fate (with me anyway) hopefully.

This has now been rescheduled to Friday on account of the seller having had a scheduling conflict pop up today - and the weather being bloody awful.  Though that also kinda makes me even more anxious to get that window sealed up!

Some of you may remember this. I bought it a few years ago off Station (now DavidB?).

I ended up selling to a friend of mine who subsequently sold it on. He bought it back last year and it has just got through another MOT.

No I haven't bought it back off him, but have loaned him my estate to move some stuff. The MINI still drives well.

Bless me Autoshite for I have sinned. It has been several years since my last vehicle purchase....

However, I haz done a buy, collectioning this morning. There won't be all the excitement* of a live collection thread as I don't do breakfast (except on holiday), I rarely poo first thing, the car is only 30 mins away by car (or over 2.5 hours by train!) so Mrs J will drive her car back from the POS.

Edit: In my mind was Point of Sale, but it equally applies to a Pile of Shite.

A mate of mine up in Carnoustie is selling a Civic Coupe with air conditioning. It doesn't have an MOT, but it's on 65k and he wants fuck all for it.

I showed my dad a picture of it and he just lit up and said he wants to buy it as our next project (and to nick the a/c for my mum's car). My mate with a welder that patches up cars for me now and then has expressed interest as well, but he lives in fucking Bristol and would have to retrieve it with an Astra H and a trailer, which is... yeah. And if he bought it I'd be buying the aircon off him anyway - I actually agreed that in principle but we're all now wondering when our Bristolian friend will pick the car up. Scotch lad wants the car gone, and there's cash waiting at my end. Bonus is it's an auto so it can can block the garage with no qualms from my folks, as they'll be able to move it.

I'm waiting for him to get back from work so I can discuss a plan with him, and it looks like I'll need to investigate Shiply unless any Scotoshiters are heading south with a trailer?

I don't know, but there's an interesting article here from 2106 that talks about the car a bit more, says he lived in Blean then.

Swift Update.

Today I had a packet for them so I didn't need to resort to any of the dubious practices above but it did pretty much start the way @brownnova suggested. I handed the packet over and before he could shut the door I said "that's an interesting collection you've got there".

Seems like a nice young man, I'm guessing mid 20s but I'm quite hopeless at guessing people's ages, and happy to talk about them and didn't treat me with suspicion as I'm sure many would. He works nights down the docks which is why I never see him working on them, hope I didn't wake him up.

Apparently the two next to each other above have been sold to someone in Birmingham but the one to the right is staying. They've all been welded in the usual places underneath. The two being sold both both came from the IOW and the HW regs confirm this. The third one came from Poole, so all localish.

They are not quite identical. One has alloy wheels and colour coded mirrors, one has steels and colour coded mirrors and one has steels and black plastic mirrors despite all being badged as GLS.

He seemed keen on them and genuinely liked them, they're not just old cars. He has an old Fiesta for everyday use, the Swift is for fun which is good to know.

Then he says his uncle has one and he only lives in the next road so I've probably seen it. I hadn't because despite being an adjacent road, I don't deliver there so I took a little detour on my way back to the office. And found this little thing.

It's been a bit pimped but it's a proper old one in a great colour. It has visible rust on the bonnet so lord knows what's underneath but it's still going.

I’m glad no dubious means were needed Yoss!

In Brownnova fleet news…

The Elgrand is still at the garage, turns out the belt snapping was the result of a tight alternator. So replacement one procured and a wheel bearing, then hopefully an MoT and the (remarkably patient) new owner can hopefully finally get their car. The garage has had staff shortages and then staff off with the ‘Rona on top… but this really has taken some time!

In true Brownnova style I’ve already got my eye on something else less practical and more risky. Possible arrival this weekend if I play my cards right, it’s very local (again… all my purchases in the last 12 months have been within 10 miles of my house except the Pontiac!)

But that does mean that (sensible head on) one of the others should go, and likely it should come from the 90s exec stable as I have three of those. The 940 is staying, that thing is awesome. So it’s between the slightly broken but very long standing 9000 (the heart choice) and the low mileage and really very capable W210 (the head choice). It’s likely heart will win and the E240 will be up for sale very soon.

So against my better judgement, I've decided that the absolute shed of a BX I picked up for parts should actually be given another chance at life. Mainly because it's been so badly treated that there isn't anything on it worth taking for parts, so might as well see if it can scrape through a ticket with a bit of tinkering.

I've started the ball rolling today by ordering a mid section and back box for the exhaust, as these are both missing which means that it currently sounds incredible* when running.

The real pain comes when I have to pay for a windscreen and potentially a gearbox if the one on it transpires to be fubar, but that's all fun and games for the future.

While they don't yet have Daihatsu parts catalogues, epc-data.com has Toyota/Lexus, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, and Kia parts catalogues scanned with clickable links from the parts straight to Amayama. I absolutely love it.

The broken steering column in one vehicle and broken quarterlights suggest this is so. That Uno they dragged out held its shape pretty well... until it was placed on the scrap wagon.
